SJRCC students share community service

St. Johns River Community College student Heather Crockett has a new appreciation for water cohesion; however, this new appreciation did not emerge from a college class, but from an afternoon of community service and a crowd of eager River Breeze Elementary School students.

Members of the SJRCC Phi Theta Kappa honor society and student-athletes recently volunteered during a Watershed Action Volunteer (WAV) program sponsored by the St. Johns River Water Management District. The program promotes the importance of water preservation and conservation through entertaining and educational activities.

While Crockett's appreciation for the WAV project may be newfound, volunteering - a major part of PTK - is not. "Community service is a lot of fun. It's rewarding to see the difference you can make," Crockett said. "It's fun seeing the kids' faces light up or watch that look of, 'Oh, I get it.'"

SJRCC athletic director Toni Willis said community service is a great opportunity to step aside from the day-to-day routine and interact with the youths of this community. "Our students get a kick out of working with the younger kids," Willis said. "I think the younger kids have fun spending time with our athletes, too. Everyone learned about water conservation, so it was a win-win situation."

River Breeze Elementary School Principal Verlene S. Bennett said it was exciting to see the community's investment in their school, including time volunteered by SJRCC students. "They were such great role models and were always engaged with our students in activities that challenged our children to think and create," Bennett said.
