Lady Vikings to hold fundraiser during final home game - Friday, Oct. 17 @ 7:00 p.m.

The St. Johns River Community College women's volleyball team will play its final home game of the season on Friday, and as the sophomore players gear up for the season's end, the upcoming game's significance is twofold, said SJRCC Athletic Director Toni Willis. "The team has chosen the last home game to promote breast cancer awareness," Willis said.

"It's a big night for the girls who are not only one step closer to graduation, but are realizing that through their contributions and efforts, they can make a difference in the world," Willis said. "They are a really great group of girls."

Funds raised from the game's admission, concession stand and donations will be given to the Side-Out Foundation, a nationwide collegiate organization that supports cancer research. Willis said that dedicating Friday's game to breast cancer awareness was the team's idea, adding that two players have lost family members to breast cancer. "I'm just so proud of these girls. One of our main objectives is to motivate these young people to be aware of what's going on in the world, outside of themselves," Willis said. "This really is a great opportunity to partner with an organization that can make a difference nationwide, but is still very near and dear to their hearts."

Sophomore Sarah Holton, who lost her grandmother to breast cancer last year, said it will be an emotional game playing on behalf of her memory. "We were close, and losing her was difficult, but I know she would be proud of us playing for this cause," Sarah said, wearing a pink ribbon in her hair in preparation for Friday's game.

Sophomores Jachael Nichols, Sarah Holton, Michelle Houser, Sara Grotz, Amber Annand and Courtney Miles and their parents will also be honored during the game.

The team will play Brevard Community College at 7:00 p.m. Admission is $1 and concessions will be available. "Dig Pink" shirts will be sold as part of the fundraising effort.
