SJRCC Press Release
March 2009
Vikings share message of sportsmanship with middle school students
Student-athletes representing St. Johns River Community College’s baseball, fastpitch softball, basketball and volleyball teams joined forces with students at Robert H. Jenkins Middle School on March 3 in celebration of National Sportsmanship Day.
Students assembled in the JMS gymnasium, where SJRCC Athletics Director Toni Willis opened the event by explaining what it means to exhibit good sportsmanship and emphasizing its importance. Empowered by this knowledge, the students then divided into smaller groups led by SJRCC student-athletes to develop and perform skits that portrayed either sportsmanship, such as taking a knee for an injured player or shaking hands with the opposing team following a game, or its exact opposite, gamesmanship, such as arguing with an umpire or intentionally fouling upon a player.
SJRCC Student-athletes who participated in the event were: Yasmine Avila, Anthony Bellamy, Jarrod Carlton, Ryan Crawford, Jessica Fornos, Kaitlin Gallamore, Hannah Hayes, Ashley Houser, Britney Kinlaw, Jessica Lee, Lawrence McCray, Chris Mock, Jesse Piccolo, JaQuella Reyes, Emily Ricketts, Allison Smith, Kaitlin Taylor, Kim Traxler, Vince Watson, Brittani Whitehurst and Rachael Wilkinson.
National Sportsmanship Day was established 19 years ago by the Institute for International Sport at the University of Rhode Island to promote students’ appreciation of the critical role of ethics, honesty, peaceful conflict resolution and fair play in athletics and society. It is celebrated in over 14,000 schools nationwide. To learn more, visit the NSD Web site at www.internationalsport.com/nsd.
SJRCC's athletic programs are based on the Palatka Campus. Information regarding SJRCC athletics can be found at www.sjrcc.edu/athletics.html.
