FloArts presents “The Trojan Women”
Florida School of the Arts will present the Euripides drama “The Trojan Women” June 18 - 20 at 7:30 p.m. and June 21 at 2:30 p.m. on the FloArts Main Stage Theatre at the St. Johns River Community College Palatka campus. Admission is $5. The play is intended for adult audiences and contains mature language and scenes.
While the script is typically performed as a Greek tragedy portraying the women of Troy enduring the spoils of war, FloArts professor and play director Ed Kelly said he wanted to give the play an artistic, contemporary transition. “The play is a timeless representation of not just Greek women, but all women who have suffered and therefore speak the same emotional language,” Kelly said. “The women’s journey is our journey. Their story is our story.”
With this creative vision, Kelly has chosen to present the play’s setting within the turmoil of today’s Middle East. “The new era and location is a fresh way to keep the characters’ struggles relevant while maintaining the oppression, political unrest and imperialness of the original script,” Kelly said.
Kelly said the play will maintain its focus on the postwar conditions of the surviving women and children and their stateliness despite the inhumanity of the victorious soldiers. He also added that the stage has been rebuilt to support the story’s new perspective. “Building the stage into the audience helps us tell the story in present time as opposed to the way we sometimes perceive history – from a distance.”
The featured cast list includes Osmary Nieves as Athena, Logan Wolfe as Poseidon, Alix Daugherty as Hecuba, Laura Rondinelli as Cassandra, Ilyssa Galloway as Andromache, Kyle Riggs as Menelaus, James Smith as Talthybios, Marissa Toogood as Helen and Alec Dawson as Astyanax.
The Chorus of Trojan Women consists of Cherisse Long, Brandi Hooper, Colleen Fahy, Rebecca Hamilton and Mandi Connor.
The soldiers are Andy Deveroux, Michael Philips, Justin Register, Patrick Taylor and Matthew Scites.
Florida School of the Arts is Florida’s first state-supported professional arts school that serves the entire state of Florida and awards the two-year associate degree. FloArts is located on the SJRCC Palatka campus. For more information, call 386-312-4300 or visit the Web site at www.floarts.org.
