SJRCC student receives Leader of Promise Scholarship
St. Johns River Community College student Aubrie Simpson was recently awarded the Leader of Promise scholarship from Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for students enrolled in two-year colleges. The Leader of Promise scholarship is a $1,000 award given to 30 new PTK members to assist them in completing their associate degrees.
Simpson, a member of the Alpha Xi Eta PTK chapter on the St. Augustine campus, was selected based upon a recommendation by her speech professor, John Green, Ph.D., as well as an essay detailing community service she has performed and her response to two discussion questions. Simpson’s essay outlined a “road trip” curriculum she implemented last year to teach Florida history to fourth graders. She is studying to become a middle school social studies teacher.
The scholarship encourages individuals to become involved in their chapters. Simpson will run for the position of Vice President of Leadership for her chapter in the fall and is participating in an online PTK leadership development course this summer to prepare her for this role. Simpson also serves as the Speech Club president and plans to become involved in the Student Government Association.
Simpson said she is honored and humbled to have been selected as one of the 30 award winners nationwide and is proud to represent SJRCC’s Alpha Xi Eta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. She said that the scholarship has opened a lot of doors for her, and she hopes that she can serve as an example and inspiration to other students.
To join PTK, members must have completed 12 credit hours at a two-year institution and hold a 3.5 grade point average. The organization promotes scholarship, leadership and service. To learn more about the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, visit www.ptk.org.
