SJRCC SGA members attend Mayor’s lighting ceremony

St. Johns River Community College student leaders recently joined St. Augustine community leaders for a first-hand look at professional fundraising during the Mayor's Holiday Lighting festivities. Members of SJRCC's Student Government Association attended the event that kicked-off the 2008 Nights of Lights and benefits the local homeless shelter.

St. Augustine Campus Provost Glen Moore said it was the first time SJRCC students were invited to attend a formal, civic event and to observe community leaders manage a successful fundraiser. "We wanted them involved in a community event that involved community leaders. It was a good introduction to leadership training and a chance for our student leaders to expand their experience and enhance their own leadership ability," Moore said. "I believe the College also benefited by the community seeing our quality of student leaders."

SGA president Emmanuel Ercole said the event was the perfect way for him and his fellow students to meet people they wouldn't ordinarily meet. “It taught me that you can never know enough people when you’re trying to promote a good cause,” Ercole said. “It really opens your eyes to your own community and how they can pull together and organize a flawless, successful event. The community leaders were humble about what they were doing and that's what impressed me the most.”
