April 2009

SJRCC instructors are good sports for a great cause

The Alpha Xi Eta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society held its second annual “Pie the Professor” fundraiser recently during St. Johns River Community College’s Spring Fling festivities on the St. Augustine Campus. Students were able to bid on the opportunity to toss a pie in the face of their favorite professors, with the proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Donors were also encouraged to remember a cancer victim or honor a cancer survivor with a luminary to be displayed at the St. Johns County Relay for Life event to be held at St. Augustine High School on May 16-17. A total of $805 was raised during the event. In a heated last-minute bidding war, professor Douglas Applewhite, M.D., edged out crowd favorite Nell Freeman to claim bragging rights for the most money raised. Professors Kim Hakala, Ed McDonald, John Metcalf and Director of Criminal Justice Training Scott Lancaster also participated in the event. “I am pleased that the fundraiser did this well,” said Freeman, who serves with Hakala as PTK faculty co-advisors. Freeman said the Alpha Xi Eta chapter raised approximately $3,700 to benefit Relay for Life last year and is already well on its way to meet or exceed this amount. The chapter plans to raise additional funds to benefit Relay for Life by selling bracelets and stuffed animals at the upcoming PTK International Convention.
