SJRCC honor society honored at Regional Convention

Seven members of the St. Johns River Community College Alpha Xi Eta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society attended the PTK Florida Regional Convention in Pensacola in November and were honored with several noteworthy awards for their accomplishments during the year, including the Distinguished Chapter Award, Outstanding Service Award and an Advisors Award. Chapter members Jonnie Dietz, Rebekah Danielson, Ashley Grotkier, Kermit McCormack and Manny Ercole also presented a workshop on fundraising for colleagues attending the convention.

The chapter is currently preparing to send representatives to the PTK International Convention in Dallas this spring, where they will partner with the American Cancer Society in conducting a workshop on fundraising for Relay for Life. “We’ve had a very successful year,” said faculty coadvisor Kim Hakala, adding that the chapter raised approximately $3,200 last year to benefit Relay for Life. “We are looking forward to sharing our ideas on fundraising with others,” she said.

Other chapter activities planned for this semester include cleaning up litter along a portion of Kenton Morrison Road as part of the Adopt a Highway program, conducting a food drive to benefit elderly citizens assisted by the St. Johns County Council on Aging, making valentines with students from the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind and the chapter’s annual blood drive in coordination with National Donor Day.

To join PTK, members must have completed 12 credit hours at a two-year institution and hold a 3.5 grade point average. The organization promotes scholarship, leadership and service. To learn more about the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, visit www.ptk.org.
