SJRCC Press Release
February 2010
St. Augustine Campus PTK
Following a busy fall semester with a record-setting blood drive, a Thanksgiving bake sale, holiday silent auction and “Breakfast with Santa” among its major activities, the St. Augustine campus Phi Theta Kappa chapter continues to buzz with activity this spring. The chapter recently hosted the PTK torch as it passed through on its way to the International Convention to be held in April. According to faculty advisor Kim Hakala, the torch is being passed from chapter to chapter throughout Florida.
Members are preparing for the chapter’s annual Valentine party for children at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. The chapter is also selling balloons, flowers, candy and other treats through Valentine’s Day to raise money for its scholarship fund. Lollipops will be sold throughout the month of February with the proceeds benefiting Operation Zambia, a service project to provide an orphanage in Zambia with clothing and school supplies. The chapter also plans to “adopt” one of the orphans. The chapter will end the month with an “Adopt-A-Highway” cleanup on February 26.
A ceremony to induct new members will be held in March, along with a teacher appreciation luncheon. Easter baskets and goodies will be sold at the end of March.
To join PTK, members must have completed 12 credit hours at a two-year institution and hold a 3.5 grade point average. For more information, contact faculty advisors Nell Freeman at (904) 808-7443 or Kim Hakala at (904) 808-7436.
