SJRCC students take on national Ping-Pong champ

Students at St. Johns River Community College were recently put to a different kind of test after spending an afternoon with former national collegiate Ping-Pong champion Derek May. Students gathered on the St. Augustine Campus to challenge May to several rounds of table tennis. The Pan Am Games silver medalist added insult to injury by defeating his contenders with objects such as a frying pan and a shoe.

May, now Publisher of the St. Augustine Record, said the tournament was a lot of fun, and he enjoyed reminiscing about his college days. "College is a fun time in your life, and it's such a fun sport," May said, adding that SJRCC's students were anything but amateurs. "I've played a lot of recreational players before, but these guys were tough," he said. "They took it easy on me."

Psychology major Richard Natto, who came closest to beating May with a 9-11 score, said that although he had played many advanced players before, he admitted to being intimidated and a little nervous about playing May. "He was definitely the best person I have ever played," Natto said. "But I think I did OK."
