SJRCC Press Release
October 2009
Piccolo verbally commits to Georgia Southern
St. Johns River Community College catcher Jesse Piccolo has verbally committed to play baseball for Georgia Southern University. A native of Palm Coast Piccolo will sign a NCAA National Letter of Intent with the Eagles on Wednesday November 11. He will enroll at GSU in August of 2010.
Piccolo is the second Viking baseball player to verbally commit to a NCAA Division 1 program in the last two weeks. Lefthanded pitcher Connor Nolan has committed to Florida State.
The Georgia Southern baseball program is highly respected throughout college baseball. GSU Head Baseball Coach Rodney Hennon is entering his 11th season in charge of the Eagles and has an overall record of 370 – 233. The Eagles won the Southern Conference Championship in 2009 and competed in the NCAA Regional Tournament in Fullerton, California.
The Georgia Southern baseball program has won nine Southern Conference Championships, competed in 12 NCAA Regional Tournaments and two Division 1 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
Ross Jones, the SJRCC head baseball coach and athletic director said, “Georgia Southern is getting one of the best catchers I have ever coached. Jesse Piccolo is an outstanding defensive catcher with great leadership abilities on and off the field. He has tremendous work ethic and character. I know that Jesse will represent SJRCC in a first class and highly principled manner on and off the field.”
Piccolo, a lefthanded hitter, enjoyed a stellar 2009 freshman season for the Vikings. At the plate, he carried a .322 batting average, hit 7 homeruns and had 39 runs batted in. Defensively, Piccolo threw out 18 baserunners and committed only 6 passed balls on the season.
Piccolo said, “I’m very thankful for the opportunity to continue my baseball and academic careers at such a great University. This was a much tougher decision than I thought it would be. I had several great schools to choose from. But in the end, I was most comfortable with Georgia Southern.”
Piccolo added, “I love it here at St. Johns. Coach Jones has been much more to me than a coach. Coming to St. Johns to play baseball for him was the best decision I could have made coming out of high school.”
The SJRCC baseball team opens its 2010 season at home against perennial national power Miami Dade College on Friday, January 29 at 6 pm.
