SJRCC hires new coordinator of interpreter services

St. Johns River Community College welcomes Jeannie Petty as the new coordinator of interpreter services. Petty joins us from the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind where she worked for five years.
Petty’s inspiration to help the hearing impaired comes from personal experience - she has deaf family members and has been signing since she was five years old. She received her associate degree from Florida State College at Jacksonville, where she majored in sign language interpretation, and received her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Flagler College.
SJRCC’s Office of Interpreter Services was established in 2006 through a partnership with the FSDB. Although the majority of SJRCC’s deaf students enroll at the St. Augustine campus, Petty will also travel to the Palatka and Orange Park campuses as necessary. Her duties will include serving as the primary interpreter for SJRCC and assigning other interpreters to college classes. She will also assist deaf students in adjusting to the demands of college life and will work with faculty and staff members to learn basic signs so that they can communicate with deaf students.
For more information on SJRCC’s Office of Interpreter Services, call (904) 808-7457 or e-mail Petty at jeanmariepetty@sjrcc.edu.
