Students honored at Palatka Campus award ceremonies

SJRCC administrators, faculty and staff recently gathered in the Viking Center to honor students for their academic achievements.

Lacie Silcox and Adam Brunson were honored as the 2008 inductees into the SJRCC Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame award is presented each year to a select number of students who are recommended by the faculty for their academic excellence and extracurricular involvement.

Dr. Gilbert Evans, Vice President for Student Affairs, welcomed students and guests. Outstanding students were recognized in the following academic areas:

Allen Caillouet Social Science Awards were presented to Samantha Hunt and Jade Hughes.

Mike Miller Mathematics Awards were presented to Jennifer Hutchinson, Vicki Forte and Brandon Patton.

Nora Michaels English Awards were presented to Michelle Houser, Brian Spencer, Lauren Smeltzer, Leanna Queen, Rachel Cooper-Anderson and Christina Ramos.

The Milton Speaks Science Award was presented to Justin Thomas, and awards for achievement in Business and Computers were presented to Melissa Page, Cirilo Hernandez and Corey Blankenship.

Maryn Chilson received the award for the Florida School of the Arts Visual Arts Student of the Year, and Katy Knowles received the Performing Arts Student of the Year award.

The Student Activities Leadership Award was presented to Matt Easterly. Travis Kilpatrick was recognized as the Billiards Champion, and Kurt Sheldon was acknowledged as the Ping Pong Champion.

Jennifer Meyers won the All USA Academic Team award. Only two applicants per campus are nominated each year for this Phi Theta Kappa honor society award.

Jessica Blitch, Adam Brunson, Penny Endicott, Chelsie Garner, Sara Griffin, Tyrell Harper, Megan Harris, Jade Hughes, Cynthia Jackson, Octavius Johnson, Lauren Jones, Jessica Jordan, Gerald Kohn, Christina Layton, Timothy Leonard, William Lowe III, Bethany Maddox, Lynetta Newton, Thaddeus Pearson, Daniel Prill, Annelise Reding, Brandon Roberts, Katie Shannon, Lacie Silcox, Justin Thomas, Brenda Ward, Robyn Williams and Matthew Wilson were recognized by Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.

Dr. Gary B. Lott Memorial Scholarships, in honor of the late SJRCC administrator, were presented to Angela Curvier and Lorraine Evatt.

Amanda Staab and Vicki Fort were the two finalists announced for the Estelle McKinsey Scholarship. The scholarship was established in memory of Putnam County educator Estelle McKinsey, who was a member of the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. Nominees must be education majors committed to teaching in Putnam County.

Student Government officers Lacie Silcox (president, fall term), Candace Garcia (vice president, fall term; president, spring term), Jade Hughes (secretary, fall term; vice president, spring term), Robyn Williams (treasurer), Lynda Whitlow (parliamentarian), Matt Easterly (representative, fall term; secretary, spring term), Brandon Roberts (representative, fall term), Wylie Bergbower (representative) and Kayla Tennant (representative) were recognized during the ceremony. Tennant, Hughes, Easterly, Whitlow and Bergbower were also acknowledged for their work as Student Ambassadors for the Palatka Campus.

SJRCC's active campus life is an open door for students to meet new people and take part in a dynamic teamwork and leadership capacity in clubs and organizations. These clubs and organizations provide extracurricular activities on campus and an opportunity for the students to participate in community service projects.
