SJRCC Open House gives high school students personal look at college life
St. Johns River Community College recently welcomed local high school students to its annual Open House. Approximately 137 seniors participated in the annual event created to inform potential freshmen of educational opportunities, scholarships and financial aid while giving them a more in-depth look at what college life would be like.
Students from Palatka, Interlachen and Crescent City high schools toured the campus and attended presentations on the Associate in Arts (transfer) degree as well as programs in respiratory care, computer science, and architectural drafting and construction technology. Students ended the tour with lunch donated by Papa John’s Pizza of Palatka and a drawing for a $250 scholarship to SJRCC. Crescent City Junior-Senior High School student Sylvester Gillon was announced as the scholarship winner.
Two students who attended the Open House were Interlachen High School's Rebecca Leasure and Montrell Sanders. Leasure said touring the campus was helpful since she plans to attend SJRCC in the fall. Sanders, who has already earned 18 college credits through SJRCC's dual enrollment program is interested in pursuing a degree in business management. “I enjoy dual enrollment. It’s more of a challenge and the classes are more in depth,” he said.
Open registration for the summer A term begins on March 16. Summer A classes begin May 11. For more information, contact SJRCC at 808-7400 or visit the Web site at www.sjrcc.edu.
