Students honored at Orange Park Campus award ceremonies

SJRCC administrators, faculty and staff recently gathered to honor students for their academic achievements and participation in campus activities. The awards ceremony was held at the Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts on the Orange Park Campus. Dr. William Simmons, Provost of the Orange Park Campus, welcomed students and guests.

Vice President for Student Affairs Gilbert Evans Jr., J.D., Ph.D., recognized Angela Curvier and Holli Schultz as the 2008 inductees into the SJRCC Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame award is presented each year to a select number of students who are recommended by the faculty for their academic excellence and extra curricular involvement.

Students recognized for Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges were: John Coleman, Angela Curvier, Lorraine Evatt, Lori Land, Kairul Lehardi, Lisa Mancino, Mark Marlar, Lashandia May, Scarlet McCloud, Lorie Nicholas, Andrew Penkunas, Joseph Phillips, Holli Schultz, Amy Scott, John Scott, Mary Termer, Jeanette Thomas, Duncan Wallace and Heather Wilson.

Outstanding students in individual classes were recognized by their instructors. Award recipients were as follows:

Math awards were presented to Daniel Anan, Andrew Brown, Robert Cox, Angela Curvier, John Glackin, Ricky Jones, Amelia Nordin and Heather Wilson. Wilson also received an award for achievement in Biology.

Social Science awards were presented to Tristan Ouellette, Tripp Ryan and Heather Smith for Macroeconomics; Saul Alcineus, Jr., Cate Frederick, Jim Lockhart and Sharon Sims for Microeconomics; Kaila Lovell and Alan Mosbach for Abnormal Psychology; Rana Azer, Takecia Green, Yvonne McKeever, Melissa Pridgen, Amalia Taborga and Miriam Yoder for General Psychology; and Chaun Carroll, Megan Juliana, Cliff Kidwell, Amber Rivera, Kyle Stuard and Aspen Walker for Human Growth and Development.

Student Government officers Sarah Knight and Holli Schultz presented Unsung Hero Awards to Patrick Busby, Mike Steinmetz, and Orange Park Campus maintenance supervisor Sam Ou.

SHIMA president C. J. Wilson presented Special Appreciation Awards to officers Teresa Vincent (vice president), Shalene Reed (secretary), Annette Shaffer (treasurer) and Kari Allgood (historian). Special Appreciation Awards were also awarded to Student Government faculty advisors John Kirkpatrick and Kristen Wolfe, as well as officers Angela Curvier (president), Heather Wilson (vice president), Candace Russ (treasurer) and Jason Perry (public relations). Curvier and Wilson were also honored as the Phi Theta Kappa Members of the Year, and Jeanette Thomas was awarded the PTK scholarship.

The awards ceremony also provided an opportunity to recognize the many clubs offered on the Orange Park Campus as well as the presidents and advisors who help make it all happen.

Those recognized were Campus Crusaders for Christ president Lindsey Campbell with advisors Barbara Burns and John Kirkpatrick;
College Democrats Club president Sarah Knight and Dr. Wayne Watters, advisor;
Horseback Riding Club president Danae Bray and advisor Jennifer Williams;
Mathematics Club president Angela Curvier and advisor Mike Keller;
Phi Theta Kappa president Angela Curvier and Dr. Stephen Murray, advisor;
SHIMA president C. J. Wilson and advisor Sheila Newberry; and
Student Ambassadors Jennifer Nelson, Andrew Cross, Angela Curvier, C.J. Wilson with advisor John Kirkpatrick.

Additional awards were presented to the winners of the Annual Chili Cook Off held in February. Student and faculty winners were recognized in each of three divisions. Winners in the hot division were student Doug Firth (Kick-Butt Chili) and professor Kristen Wolfe (Wolfe Brand Chili); in the mild division, student Jill Ramsey (Philly Chili) and professor Melody Hargraves (Georgia Chili); and in the creative division, student Veronica King (King Kong Chili) and Marilee Wisner (Fiesta Chili).

SJRCC's active campus life is an open door for students to meet new people and take part in a dynamic teamwork and leadership capacity in clubs and organizations. These clubs and organizations provide extracurricular activities on campus and an opportunity for the students to participate in community service projects.
