SJRCC names health information management director
St. Johns River Community College welcomes Virginia Delgado-Oakwood as the new director of health information management. Oakwood joins us from Baptist Health South Florida and brings 18 years of teaching experience in the HIM programs from Florida International University and Miami Dade College.
Delgado-Oakwood's experience includes serving seven years as the HIM, performance improvement, medical staff and admission director for the Villa Maria Rehabilitation Hospital and Nursing Center. She was also the operational manager for the HIM department at the University of Miami's Sylvester Cancer Center. She has previously served as past president for the South Florida Health Information Management Association and as a student mentor for the Take Stock in Children program.
Originally from south Florida, Delgado-Oakwood holds a bachelor's degree in health information management and a master's degree in human resource management from Florida International University and is certified with the Registered Health Information Administration. Delgado-Oakwood has relocated to Crescent City where she will continue her passion for animals, dancing and gardening. She is fluent in Spanish and is proud to share that her daughter and husband are educators.
The health information management program is offered on all campuses, with some degree-specific courses available only on the Orange Park campus. Students who earn an A.S. degree in HIM are eligible to sit for the national credentialing exam to become registered health information technicians (RHIT).
