SJRCC Board Members Appointed
The St. Johns River Community College District Board of Trustees welcomes John Nelson, Jr. and Rob Bradley, J.D., as its newest members. Nelson and Bradley were appointed today by Governor Charlie Crist to begin serving their four-year terms this month.
SJRCC President Joe Pickens, J.D., said the College welcomes its new Board members and honors the service of its outgoing members who provided the College with outstanding leadership for many years. "We are honored to welcome these dedicated and talented individuals to our Board," Pickens said. "Their diverse backgrounds, professional successes and community connections will be a positive contribution to our students, the College and its future growth."
Joining the Board as a new representative for Putnam County is John Nelson Jr. Nelson, 65, succeeds Dr. Neil Benson, who has served on the Board since 2004. Nelson is the Executive Director of the Palatka Housing Authority and is a nationally recognized leader in the public housing and sustainable community development industry. Prior to his arrival in Palatka in 2004, he served as the CEO/COO in some of the largest urban housing authorities in the country, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and more recently, Detroit. He serves on the boards of the local Weed and Seed chapter and the Police Athletic League, and serves as the project coordinator in the effort to restore Central Academy, the first accredited African-American school in Florida.
Nelson graduated from Geneva College in Pennsylvania and attended the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs. He lives in Palatka with his wife, Felecia, a Putnam County school teacher.
Joining the Board as a representative for Clay County is Rob Bradley. Bradley, 38, succeeds Dale Wilson, who has served on the Board since 2000 and also served as Vice Chairman. Bradley, a fourth-generation Clay County native, is the managing partner with the Law Firm of Kopelousos & Bradley, P.A., in Orange Park. He currently serves as the attorney for the Town of Orange Park and as the attorney for the City of Keystone Heights. He formerly served as the vice chairman of the Clay County Board of County Commissioners and an assistant state attorney for the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Florida.
Bradley's civic duties include serving as a founding member of the Clay County Victims Services. He is a graduate of the University of Florida and lives in Fleming Island with his wife, Jennifer, and their three children.
The College also announces the reappointment of Trustee Diane Leone, representing St. Johns County. Leone, 47, is a native of St. Augustine and is a certified interior decorator and owns her own design firm. She is also a marketing specialist who has owned her own marketing firm, Marketing Edge, Inc. for the past 15 years. Her business was honored as one of the top 100 fastest growing businesses in Florida. She is also a freelance writer and an established author. Leone was appointed by the Governor to serve on two state educational advisory boards: the Postsecondary Education Advisory Council and the Council for Education Policy Research and Improvement.
Currently serving on SJRCC's Board of Trustees are Chairman William "Bunky" Roberts representing Putnam County, Vice Chairman Larry Lancaster representing Clay County, Preston Sloan representing Putnam County and Carl Beck representing St. Johns County.
SJRCC serves approximately 10,000 students in Clay, Putnam and St. Johns counties and offers more than 40 associate in science degrees, college credit and vocational certificates in addition to offering the associate in arts degree (transfer degree). SJRCC is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate degree.
