SJRCC PRESS RELEASE
November 2007

Model UN representatives selected as honorable delegation

SJRCC's recently-formed Model United Nations delegation, a division of the St. Augustine Campus Speech Club, attended its first Florida Model United Nations (FMUN) conference in October, where members Amber Fulton, Klaus Smit and Zackery Roberts received an Honorable Delegation Award for their representation of the United Kingdom.

Prior to the conference, the students selected a country to represent and researched that country's position on particular topics of interest. At the conference, delegations from SJRCC, Santa Fe Community College, Tallahassee Community College and the University of Florida represented their chosen countries during committee sessions in which the countries worked together to write and pass resolutions to solve issues presented before the committees. Awards were presented to delegations based upon their diplomacy, negotiation, speaking skills and research capabilities.

Formed in the 1920s, the Model United Nations (Model UN) is a simulation of the United Nations General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. Many of today's governmental, business and artistic leaders, including U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, actor Samuel L. Jackson and Chelsea Clinton, participated in Model UN during their academic careers. The FMUN was formed in 2006 to promote Model United Nations and is open to any college or university with a formal Model UN program or with an interest in furthering international education. For more information, visit the FMUN Web site at www.fmun.org.
