SJRCC awards scholarship

The St. Johns River Community College Foundation recently awarded a scholarship in honor of the late Putnam County businessman Roger Mathews. The Roger W. Mathews Sr. Ethics in Business Scholarship was awarded to Palatka resident and SJRCC sophomore Chris Kuczewski. The scholarship will help Kuczewski complete his associate in arts degree at SJRCC this spring and transfer to Liberty University in the fall.

The scholarship was founded by Mathews' wife, Joetta, and their son, Randy. Joetta said Roger held the highest regard toward business ethics and would appreciate the opportunity to help a deserving student. "He was always supportive of a quality education," Joetta said. "He would be very pleased with the impact this scholarship will have on Chris' future."

Kuczewski, who also works a part time job, was chosen out of approximately 30 applicants. Joetta said she chose Kuczewski for his work ethic and his GPA - the highest of all the applicants.

Joetta said she takes the responsibility of choosing an applicant very seriously and also based her decision on KuczewskiÕs Christian principles. "I read and re-read the applications and then prayed about it," she said. "His Christian values helped me make my decision."

Kuczewski plans to pursue a degree in communications at the private college located in Virginia.

Applicants interested in the scholarship must be a Florida resident, demonstrate financial need and have a willingness to perform community service. For more information regarding SJRCC scholarships, contact the Foundation Office at 312-4100 or visit the Web site at www.sjrcc.edu.
