SJRCC law enforcement cadets recognized

St. Johns River Community College criminal justice academy cadets were recently recognized during a graduation ceremony. Cadets who completed the certificate program for the law enforcement basic recruit program will be eligible to take the state certification exam.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, St. Augustine Police Department, St. Augustine Beach Police Department and Clay County Sheriff's Office opened the ceremony with the "presentation of the colors" followed by the cadets reciting the code of ethics.

The guest speaker was Putnam County Sheriff Dean Kelly. Kelly told the cadets that as law enforcement officers, the public will watch every move they make and will also look for acknowledgement in public places. "They want to be our friends," Kelly said. He also advised the cadets to seize every opportunity to teach civilians how to be safe. "Think outside the box. Always look for better ways to do what we do," he said.

Special recognition in the basic law enforcement class went to St. Johns County resident Jonathan Hawley for "Most Proficient in Firearms" and "Highest Academic Achiever." The "The Medallion Award" went to Flagler County resident John Brady.

The criminal justice certificate programs provide job-related training to prepare cadets for entry-level employment in their career field. The certificates also provide credit hours to be transferred into SJRCC's associate in science degree in criminal justice officer administration. The program is located on the St. Augustine Campus.

Classes for law enforcement basic recruit will begin in August. Classes for corrections basic recruit begin in September. For more information, contact the Criminal Justice Department at (904) 808-7490 or visit the Web site at sjrcc.edu.
