FloArts opens new season with drawings

Florida School of the Arts will open its 2008-09 season of events with a gallery show for Gainesville artist Lauren Garber Lake. The artist will speak about her drawings at the opening reception on September 4th at 7:00 p.m.

FloArts gallery director and fine arts instructor Michael Burban said Lake's most recent works include a highly creative process involving graphite on paper and other objects to express universal feelings.

"Just as a drop of water can be an aspect of an ocean, I use the image of flowers to express beauty, sadness, celebration, happiness, longing and our life struggle with the changes of existence itself," Lake said.

Lake has an extensive exhibition record and is an assistant art professor at the University of Florida. Lake is also a national and international art lecturer.

The exhibit will be on display through October 12 in the Main Gallery at the Florida School of the Arts, located on the Palatka Campus of St. Johns River Community College. The gallery exhibits are free and open to the public.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. FloArts is Florida's first state-supported professional arts school. Approximately 150 students attend FloArts each year; students are recruited from across the state, the southeast region and New York City. Admission is based on audition and portfolio review.
