Florida School of the Arts presents the musical "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change"
Florida School of the Arts invites you to laugh along with a stage full of modern-day couples as they explore the joys of dating, romance and marriage in "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change," an adult comedy by Joe DiPietro and Jimmy Roberts.
The show runs October 9 - 11 at 7:30 p.m. and October 12 at 2:30 p.m. on the FloArts Main Stage Theatre at the St. Johns River Community College Palatka Campus. Admission is $5. The play contains adult language and adult subject matter and is not suitable for children.
This musical comedy review explores the stages of contemporary relationships - from the first kiss and birth control to parenting and divorce. FloArts acting instructor and play director Patricia Crotty said the play is geared toward the 20-something crowd, but anyone who has been in a relationship can relate to the scenes as they move through all phases of life. "It's very funny, but very funny in today's contemporary way. It touches on every topic you have ever secretly wondered about," Crotty said. "The audience's response will only enhance the theatrical experience as they react to the scenes with bursts of laughter and self-conscious giggles."
The play's original script relies on four actors to play the 30 or more different couples. However, Crotty decided to expand the roles in order to give 12 additional students the opportunity to perform. Crotty added that the author recommended adapting the play locally, thus setting the play in present day Jacksonville.
Scenic and lighting design instructor Robert O'Leary said the design of the set will draw the audience into the sweet, fun and intimate moments. "Acting on the idea of a collage of stories, we have created a whimsical collage of Jacksonville architecture that should provide a playground for the acting and dancing in our production as well as a visual playground for eyes of our audience," O'Leary said
O'Leary added that on a technical note, the lighting designers are staying on the cutting edge of technical theater as they work with a new lighting system. "Along with new power and control comes, for the first time ever at FSA, our own in-house intelligent lighting," he said. "The students are learning how to program and use some of the theatrical industry's most advanced automated lighting instruments."
The featured cast includes Mandi Connor, Ilyssa Galloway, Lyle Lopez, Raquel Lopez, Brian Lugo, Christian Lykiardopulos, Sarah McKenzie-Duckworth, Garrett Page, Christina Ramos, Alejandro Rodriguez, Laura Rondinelli, Torey Scarbrough, James Smith, Samantha Smith, Marissa Toogood and Logan Wolfe.
