Florida School of the Arts welcomes new dean

St. Johns River Community College welcomes Alan Hentschel as the new dean of Florida School of the Arts. An established artist and teacher, Hentschel, 57, brings a wealth of international experience and leadership to FloArts. He recently relocated from Illinois where he served six years as the associate dean of fine and applied arts at the College of DuPage, the largest community college in the Midwest.

Hentschel's extensive background in the arts includes seven years as the director for the Parsons Paris School of Art and Design in France as well as duties as a recruiter, chairman of a foundation program and associate dean of a subdivision accommodating 4,000 students. His career also includes 14 years as an art instructor at Parsons Paris and a recent stint as a drawing and 2D design instructor at DuPage.

SJRCC President Joe Pickens said Hentschel is an impressive addition to the talented and diverse faculty at FloArts. "Dean Hentschel brings to the College a perfect blend of artistic and academic accomplishments. His experience at the community college level, combined with his international experience, will be a positive contribution to the College and its efforts to enhance its artistic programs."

Hentschel said he looks forward to enhancing the creative connection between faculty, students and the College community. "I am thrilled to share my passion for the arts with the students and the residents of our College district. From the moment I read the qualifications for this position, I felt the College, its needs and the expertise I have to offer were a perfect match," he said. "I find the idea of integrating with the local communities as an artist and as the dean of Florida School of the Arts very appealing."

"I also look forward to diligently facilitating the work of faculty to help our students achieve success and pursue their dreams as future artists and performers," Hentschel said.

Hentschel holds a master's degree in drawing and painting from the California State University at Long Beach and is fluent in French. He will serve as the College's sixth dean of FloArts. He and his wife, Ginger, reside in St. Augustine.

Patrons can meet Dean Hentschel during the concluding lecture for the traveling exhibit "Liquid Muse: Paintings from the St. Johns Region" on Tuesday, August 25 at 6:00 p.m.

FloArts is located on the Palatka campus of St. Johns River Community College and is Florida's first state-supported professional arts school, awarding degrees in the performing and fine arts. Approximately 150 students attend FloArts each year; students are recruited from across the state, the southeast region and New York City. Admission is based on audition and portfolio review.
