SJRCC Press Release
December 2008
Local students tour health care facility
Students from Middleburg High School got a closer look into the world of health care training when they participated in a tour of the new health-sciences building on the SJRCC Orange Park Campus. Fifteen members of the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) participated in a hands-on tour of the two-story 52,000-square foot facility that accommodates the nursing and health information management programs.
The tour included demonstrations of the human patient simulators that are used by SJRCC nursing students. The simulators accurately mirror human responses to procedures such as CPR, intravenous medication and ventilation. They can also be programmed to breathe, speak and give birth.
SJRCC nursing instructor Jane Bowditch, RN, BSN, CMS, said the new facility and technology helps students in their critical thinking. “It’s designed to offer improved learning experiences to nursing students using replicated hospital environments and computer technology," Bowditch said. "The ability to use interactive simulators in a clinical-type setting will improve students' competences in patient care."
HOSA president Lynn Morgan, who is considering applying for SJRCC’s nursing program in the fall, said she was amazed to discover how much the facility resembled a real hospital. “The technology they have now is amazing,” Morgan said. “The simulators are very close to a real human. The instructors demonstrated how they could sweat, say ‘ouch’ and have a pulse.”
Morgan shared what she called a common fear among fellow health care students – working on real patients for the first time; however, she said having the opportunity to work on the simulators will put some of her fears to rest. “You’re always afraid to work on a person in the beginning. Their lives are in your hands. Even though we’ve been taught a lot, it’s easier to begin on a manikin. It’s a real confidence builder,” Morgan said.
