SJRCC students build futures through Habitat for Humanity
Nine members of SJRCC’s Orange Park Campus Phi Theta Kappa honor society and five members of the Campus Crusade for Christ chapter recently spent their Saturday morning building dreams for local residents. The students were volunteering with the Clay County Habitat for Humanity, an organization that offers qualified families earning less than 50% of the median family income a piece of the American dream - the opportunity to own their own home.
The volunteers assisted with cleaning up the job site, applying facing to the roof of the home and various other tasks, according to PTK president Candace Russ. Russ said that the volunteers enjoyed the experience and look forward to working on other projects with Habitat for Humanity. “Everyone did a wonderful job,” she said. “It was easy to tell that the Habitat for Humanity coordinators were happy that we could help.”
Campus Crusade for Christ president Shaun Saulsberry said that his group volunteered in response to a Habitat for Humanity announcement posted on a campus bulletin board. “We had been actively searching for a charitable community endeavor at which to involve ourselves,” said Saulsberry. “Upon seeing the posting, we were happy to get involved and soon discovered that our PTK counterparts were also involved.” Although this was the group’s first involvement with Habitat for Humanity, Saulsberry said that his members will almost certainly partake in future projects with the organization.
SJRCC’s active campus life is an open door for students to meet new people and take part in a dynamic teamwork and leadership capacity in clubs and organizations. These clubs and organizations provide extracurricular activities on campus and an opportunity for the students to participate in community service projects. For more information regarding student activities and organizations available at SJRCC, contact the student activities coordinator on your campus.
