Orange Park nursing students present "Grand Rounds"

Orange Park nursing students were recently introduced to a new way of demonstrating their critical thinking skills this semester. The series of case presentations or "Grand Rounds" gave first-year students the opportunity to present their first semester of clinicals to classmates and faculty. Commonly used by physicians, grand rounds enhance diagnosis and intervention skills by participating as both presenter and spectator.

Approximately 35 students reported on conditions from pneumonia and pancreatitis to acute cancer pain. Nursing instructor Maureen McGinty, RN, MSN, IBCLC, said she thought the rounds would be a great experience for SJRCC students.

"Grand rounds have traditionally been limited to physicians. They get together as part of their learning experience and discuss cases, diagnoses and prognosis. Why can't nurses do the same thing?" McGinty said. "I thought they did a fabulous job."

Students gave 15-minute presentations beginning with the initial contact with their patient and analyzing symptoms to the prognosis. Students also demonstrated their patient care plan with posters and diagrams.

"This is something I plan to incorporate into all of my classes here, as it was so well-received by the students and the guests who attended," McGinty said.
