Florida School of the Arts presents faculty show

Florida School of the Arts will present its annual faculty show with a gallery opening on Thursday, February 19 at 7 p.m. The show, which includes a mixture of oils, acrylics, watercolors and photography, will be in the FloArts main gallery located on the Palatka Campus of St. Johns River Community College and will be on display through March 11. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call (386) 312-4300.

The show will highlight the best faculty pieces from the past year according to fine art instructor and gallery director Michael Burban. Burban will be featured in the show along with graphic design instructor Aaron Alexander, graphic design and photography instructor Charles Marsh, scenic design instructor Robert O’Leary, costume design instructor Lynnsey Slanina, and FloArts adjunct instructors Kim Miller, Tiffany Sage and Michael Birchfield.

Some of the works Burban will display include paintings in acrylic and water color mediums which, he said, depict themes and subject matter of good over evil and anatomical forms of the body. Burban will also display a small oil painting as a study after Rembrandt.

Marsh will display photographs of intimate portraits of nature as well as photographic collages using digital photographs and the scanning of real objects. Marsh said that he incorporates diverse objects such as maps, signs, leaves, insects, snakes and any other objects that have interesting shapes, textures, color or character. “These collages usually involve nature and are often abstract, comprised of many layers with hidden or obscured images,” he said.

Alexander’s works include traditional and digital photography, as well as video art depicting themes of memory, time and mortality.

Slanina will display watercolor renderings for costumes from the FloArts theater performance R.U.R.

O’Leary’s works will include paintings of Art Deco style posters as well as a hand-constructed three-dimensional art piece depicting a surfboard.

Miller will display a series of oil paintings on panel. The individual pieces, entitled “Applepuppy,” “Rose’s Bones” and “Moving Still,” explore Miller’s own interpretation of feminine sainthood and martyrdom. Miller said her inspiration for the series came from vintage photography and Magical Realism as well as traditional Renaissance painting techniques.

Sage will display a realistic oil portrait on canvas.

Florida School of the Arts is Florida's first state-supported professional arts school that serves the entire state of Florida. Florida School of the Arts awards the two-year associate degree and is located on the Palatka campus of St. Johns River Community College.
