SJRCC instructor honored by Florida Health Information Management Association

St. Johns River Community College instructor Sheila Newberry, M.Ed, RHIT, was recently presented with the Educator Award at the Florida Health Information Management Association's annual meeting held in Orlando. According to Newberry, nominees for the award must be an educator in the State of Florida, must provide two supporting letters outlining his or her dedication to the health information management field and must submit a current resume. This is the first year that the Educator Award has been presented.

Newberry is beginning her sixth year of teaching at SJRCC and also serves as the program director for SJRCC's health information management program. She is currently working on her doctorate degree and said she considers herself an example for her students. Newberry said she feels that her students can appreciate the fact that she is walking in their shoes. "My personal goal is that I aspire to inspire," said Newberry. She finds her inspiration in the words of William Arthur Ward: "The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires."

Brenda Church, an adjunct instructor who teaches advanced ICD-9-CM coding at SJRCC, was also recognized at the annual meeting. Church received a scholarship in the amount of $1,000, which she will use in pursuit of her bachelor's degree at Stephens College.
