SJRCC Press Release

February 2009

Community service is Vikings’ biggest score

For the second year, members of the E. H. Miller basketball team suited up for an afternoon of shooting hoops with the St. Johns River Community College basketball team; however, this time they meant business. In preparation for the Special Olympics, the “Rams” competed in a real game against the SJRCC Vikings - complete with whistles, fouls and cheers.

EHM physical education teacher Lucie Little said the game, which included exceptional students from Interlachen High School and EHM, was the highlight of the team’s year. “This is one of the biggest events for the students. They look forward to this all year,” Little said. “To them, it’s like going to Hollywood.”

The game was one of many community service projects in which SJRCC’s student-athletes participate according to head basketball coach Buster Harvey. “Community service is just one of the ways we encourage positive development among our student-athletes,” Harvey said. “This interaction is a win-win combination for everyone involved. It’s a real confidence builder.” Harvey reported a much-deserved victory for the Rams.

SJRCC's athletic programs are based on the Palatka Campus and consist of men's basketball, men's baseball, women's fastpitch softball and women's volleyball. For more information regarding SJRCC athletics, visit our Web site at www.sjrcc.edu/athletics.html.
