SJRCC criminal justice cadets join Special Olympics torch run

Cadets from the St. Johns River Community College Criminal Justice Training Academy recently participated in the annual Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run. The cadets joined local law enforcement officers in the three-mile trek, all to benefit the Special Olympics athletes and kick off the state's summer games.

SJRCC instructor Melinda Padgett said this is the first year the College has joined the run, and hopes to make the College's participation a tradition. "A big part of law enforcement is community involvement," Padgett said. "We not only want to show our dedication and goodwill toward the community, but want to teach our cadets that kind of commitment early on in their education."

More than 60 law enforcement and corrections basic recruit cadets ran from the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office to the Castillo de San Marcos beside Special Olympics athletes representing St. Augustine High School and Pedro Menendez High School. Other organizations participating in the run were the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, St. Augustine Police Department, Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, U.S. Department of Defense at NAS Jacksonville, U.S. Park Police, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the St. Johns County School District.
