Florida School of the Arts presents multispectral photography by Don Browning
As part of the visiting artist series, Florida School of the Arts will present a gallery exhibition for artist Don Browning. The Marion County artist will speak about his collection, “Photon Magic,” at an opening reception on Thursday, February 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the fine arts gallery located on St. Johns River Community College’s Palatka campus.
Browning will also share his expertise on overcoming the “starving artist syndrome” as well as photography, light and conservation during a free public lecture/discussion on Wednesday, February 24 at 1:00 p.m.
As an artist and environmental activist, Browning’s work focuses on Florida’s natural treasures, culture and heritage. Browning describes his exhibit as a modern exploration of light beyond one’s typical perception of the colors red, blue and green.
“I use multi-wavelength slices of the electromagnetic spectrum, much like NASA’s Hubble images, to show the whole picture,” Browning said. “The exhibit is futuristic and historic while evoking emotion.”
The collection also includes photos from his Heritage Collection, which explores the daily life cycle of Florida’s wading birds.
Browning’s artistic journey began as a child in a rural setting outside Kansas City and matured during his two years of U.S. Naval duty, the basis for the Asian influence in his work. His formal studies at the Central Missouri State University grounded his fundamentals and eventually led him to a design and graphics career in Central Florida. His work has been published, collected and exhibited in private, municipal, and corporate collections, including the state’s art collection on display in the Governor's office. Browning is also a member of the Florida Council of the Arts.
The exhibit will be on display through March 12. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Gallery exhibits are free and open to the public.
Florida School of the Arts is Florida's first state-supported professional arts school. Approximately 150 students attend Florida School of the Arts each year, with students recruited from across the state and the southeast region. Admission is based on audition and portfolio review.
