Florida School of the Arts presents photography by Karen Bell

As part of the visiting artist series, Florida School of the Arts will present a gallery exhibition for New York artist Karen Bell. The artist will speak about her collection, “Color Field: New Photographs,” at an opening reception on Thursday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery located on St. Johns River Community College’s Palatka campus.
FloArts gallery director and fine arts instructor Michael Burban said Bell’s works feature traditional as well as digital materials. Her interest in challenging traditional ways of viewing landscape has led her to photograph a wide variety of environments. “In her new works, there is a subtle shift of focus that leads the viewer’s eye to see the fragments as well as the entirety of the vista,” said Burban, adding that quietude is disturbed by subtle tension within each piece. Bell’s photographs have been exhibited widely throughout the United States and can be found in numerous public and private collections.
The exhibit will be on display through November 19. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Gallery exhibits are free and open to the public.
Florida School of the Arts is Florida's first state-supported professional arts school. Approximately 150 students attend Florida School of the Arts each year, with students recruited from across the state, the southeast region and New York City.
