Palatka Campus students honored at awards ceremony
St. Johns River Community College administrators, faculty and staff recently gathered in the Viking Center to honor students for their academic achievements.
Mary Hurst and Crystal Wiles were honored as the 2009 inductees into the SJRCC Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame award is presented each year to a select number of students who are recommended by the faculty for their academic excellence and extracurricular involvement.
Gregory Hyzy received the award for the Florida School of the Arts Visual Arts Student of the Year, and Chally Rowjohn received the Performing Arts Student of the Year award.
Students recognized by Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges were:
Vince Folston, Megan Georgeo, Mary Hurst, Lisa Huston, Katie McCreary, Laura Rondinelli, Chally Rowjohn, Willie Sanders, Samantha Swearingen, Jeremy Tolbert, Crystal Wiles and Jennifer Woodruff.
The Dr. Gary B. Lott Memorial Scholarship, in honor of the late SJRCC administrator, was presented to Jacob MacGibbon.
Additional programs were also recognized: Allen Caillouet Social Science Awards were presented to Joshua Carver and Gary Carter. Mike Miller Mathematics Awards were presented to Andrea Leary, Heather Crockett, Kurt Sheldon and Daniel Plyler. Math club members recognized were Andrea Leary, Marlena Plymel and Jodee Chester.
The Nora Michaels English Award was presented to Amanda Rafuse. The Milton Speaks Science Award was presented to Henry Smith, Jr. The Student Activities Leadership Award was presented to Paige Green.
Student Government Association officers recognized were: Arthur Ward, president; Maried Aleman, vice president; Victoria Champion, secretary; Elizabeth Fucini, treasurer; and representatives Willie Sanders, Kaitlyn Mast and Toniette Whitlock.
Phi Theta Kappa officers recognized were: Jessica Blitch, president; Jodee Chester, vice president; and Heather Crockett, secretary.
SJRCC's active campus life is an open door for students to meet new people and take part in a dynamic teamwork and leadership capacity in clubs and organizations. These clubs and organizations provide extracurricular activities on campus and an opportunity for the students to participate in community service projects.

Florida School of the Arts professor Charles Marsh presents the Visual Arts Student of the Year award to Gregory Hyzy. Hyzy will transfer to the University of West Florida as a senior to study photography. Professor Lee Dando presents Chally Rowjohn with the Performing Arts Student of the Year award. Rowjohn will begin his performing arts career with Disney in May.
