Athletes honored at SJRCC awards ceremony


St. Johns River Community College administrators, faculty and staff gathered recently to honor student-athletes for their athletic abilities as well as their academic achievements. The awards ceremony was held on April 21 in the Tuten Gymnasium located on SJRCC’s Palatka campus.

SJRCC student athletes continue to excel on an athletic and academic level. Students were acknowledged for their academic dedication, community involvement, and athleticism in their respective sports. Coaches representing SJRCC’s volleyball, basketball, softball and baseball teams recognized each player individually, distributed plaques for special team awards and honored the male and female student-athletes of the year.

Volleyball coach Scott Conkling presented the “Freshman of the Year” award to Kimberly Russell and the “Sophomore of the Year” award to Courtney Miles. Michelle Houser received the “Heart of a Viking” award.

Basketball coach Buster Harvey presented the “Hustle Award” to Willie Sanders and the “Over-Achievement Award” to Lawrence McCray.

For softball, Kaitlin Taylor received the “Golden Glove” award and Whitney Holland received the “Silver Slugger” award. “Rookie of the Year” honors went to Allison Smith.

Baseball coach Ross Jones presented awards to Marshall Stalvey for “Most Valuable Pitcher” and Nick De la Osa for “Most Valuable Offensive Player.” Jesse Piccolo received the “Most Valuable Defensive Player” award, and Tommy Dame was awarded “Most Valuable Player.”

Athletic Director Toni Willis concluded the evening by announcing the male and female student-athletes of the year. The “Male Athlete of the Year” award was presented to baseball player Tommy Dame, and the “Female Athlete of the Year” award was presented to volleyball player Michelle Houser.
