ONLINE COURSES AT SJRCC

Call (386) 312-4211     E-mail: opencampus@sjrcc.edu

Online courses use technology for teaching and communication. At St. Johns River Community College, online courses are offered through Blackboard CE6 Learning Management System. Blackboard is a learning management system that contains tools for distance learning, such as an online syllabus; course content and notes; e-mail, discussion board, and chat system for collaboration and communication; interactive quizzes and exams; and much more. Online instructors use a variety of learning methods and assignments in online courses just as they do in an on-campus class.

All of SJRCC's online courses are instructor-led and use the same schedule as on-campus courses. Contrary to many people's assumption, online courses are not a "learn at your own pace" type of course. The courses require you to work from written directions without face-to-face instructions, adhering to timelines and due dates. Online courses require students to dedicate AT LEAST as much time to as on-campus courses.

In a typical online course, you may have regular reading and writing assignments, quizzes, tests, midterm and final exams, papers, and discussion assignments to complete, all with deadlines explained on the course schedule. Although online courses do have firm deadlines and due dates, they also provide the students the flexibility to "attend" class and submit assignments any time of the day or night according to their schedule.

Note: Not all online courses are taught each semester. To view the courses being taught during a particular semester, please see the SJRCC Course Schedule. Click View Courses by Campus and then select Online Courses.)

ONLINE STUDENTS:

After registering for the course with the college, on the first day of the semester, you must log on to the portal MySJRCC at http://mysjrcc.sjrcc.edu. Online students must log on and begin their online class prior to the conclusion of the first week of the semester. If you do not begin your distance learning course by the end of the first week of the semester by making contact with your instructor and completing the specified activity, you will be dropped as a "No Show." Online faculty may be contacted through e-mail located on the Open Campus/Distance Learning Faculty and Staff page.

DIRECTIONS FOR BEGINNING AN ONLINE COURSE:

You will not have access to your online course until after 12:01 a.m. on the first day of the semester.

To begin an online course, go to the College's portal MySJRCC at http://mysjrcc.sjrcc.edu and log in. This is the same website where you registered for your current term classes. Use the same ID and password that you used when you registered.

After you log in to MySJRCC, click on the "My Courses" tab. On the right column of the "My Courses" tab is the My Courses tool. Change the course selection setting to the current term. Then, click on the link to your online class. This link will take you directly into that course within Blackboard, our online course management system.

Required Technology:

All online courses require access to the following:
  • Computer with personal access to the Internet (e.g., computer with a modem, DSL, or cable modem connection);
  • An SJRCC student e-mail account;
  • WebCt compatible Web-browser software, at least Internet Explorer 4.5 or Netscape 4.7;
  • Virus checking software;
  • MS Word;
  • Some courses may require additional software. For details about specific course requirements, refer to the information found in this Course Software Chart.

Required On-Campus Meetings:

Interaction with the faculty member responsible for an online course typically does not require the student to be on campus. However, some online classes do require on-campus testing and/or labs. Online classes that require on-campus meetings are identified as such on the online course listing page. Click here to see a list of SJRCC's online classes that require on-campus meetings.

Where do I get the books for my online course?
Required textbooks, study guides, and other materials are available for purchase at all SJRCC campus bookstores. Please see the bookstore's Web page for more information.

How will I receive my syllabus for an online course?
The syllabi for online classes are available online, within the Blackboard online course. The Blackboard sites are password protected, and you will not be able to access the course until the first day of the semester.

How often will I have to go to campus for an online course?
Interaction with the faculty member responsible for the course typically does not require the student to be on campus. However, some online classes do require on-campus testing and/or labs. Click here to see a list of SJRCC's online classes that require on-campus meetings.

How are assignments submitted for an online course?
Assignments for an online course are submitted via the tools within the Blackboard online course.

What should I do if I have questions about my course?
Students who have questions about the course requirements or course subject matter are welcome and encouraged to call, e-mail, or go to their instructor's office during office hours as necessary. The instructor of the course is available to answer questions via phone, e-mail, or in person at his/her SJRCC assigned campus.

How long do I have to get in touch with my instructor at the beginning of the term?
Contact must be made with the instructor prior to the conclusion of the first week of all distance learning courses at SJRCC. Each distance learning course has a "drop for non-attendance policy." If you do not begin your distance learning course by the end of the first week of the semester by making contact with your instructor and completing the specified activity, you will be dropped as a "No Show."

Do Distance Learning classes have an attendance policy like SJRCC's other classes do?
Although in distance learning classes you do not "attend" class in the traditional sense, these courses do have an attendance policy and in keeping with SJRCC's policy in the Student Handbook, you may be dropped for non-attendance:

"If a student accumulates recorded absences totaling three or more instructional hours during the withdrawal period, the instructor may initiate an official warning to the student that he/she has reached the limit of allowed recorded absences. Further, the loss of instructional time through absences will result in the student being withdrawn from the course." -SJRCC Student Handbook

During a traditional-length semester, three instructional hours of attendance equals one week's missed work. If you miss a week's worth of work in a distance learning course, you may receive a warning for non-attendance, and if you miss more than one week's work in a distance learning course, you may be dropped from the course due to non-attendance. However, it is ultimately the student's responsibility to drop a class if he or she no longer wishes to be enrolled in it. Students should not assume that just because they stop completing assignments that the instructor will drop them from the course. Please see the SJRCC Academic Calendar for withdrawal deadlines.

How and where do I take tests for an online class?
The testing for the majority of SJRCC's online classes is done online. Some online classes, however, have between one and four on-campus exams and/or labs scheduled by the instructor throughout the term, but the number may vary depending on the course. Students may elect to take their on-campus exams with their instructor at his or her home campus or at one of the alternate testing sites coordinated by the Dean of Academic Success and Student Retention. To assure a test will be at the appropriate location, students must notify the instructor of the test date and site at least ten days in advance. On-campus labs must be completed with the instructor during the specified lab date, time, and location. No alternate lab dates or locations will be available.

What if I live outside of the SJRCC area and want to take an online course?
If you live outside of the SJRCC area, you may still be able to enroll in one of SJRCC's online courses if you are able to arrange to purchase your books from the bookstore (386-312-4173) in a timely manner. In addition to arranging to purchase your books, if the online course you are taking requires on-campus testing, you will need to arrange to have your testing administered at a local community college or university. Some of SJRCC's online science classes require on-campus labs that would require students' presence on campus and may exclude some students from taking the course. Please consult with the online course instructor and the Open Campus (386-312-4211) before registering.

Why do I need an SJRCC e-mail account?
Your SJRCC e-mail account is a fast, easy way for the College to contact you regarding important issues such as registration, deadlines, grades, graduation, etc. Your distance learning instructor will use your SJRCC e-mail account to make initial contact with you and send you orientation information about your course. Be sure to check it the first week of the semester so you don't miss the beginning of your course. In addition to communicating with your distance learning instructors, you can use your SJRCC e-mail to contact your instructors, the College, and friends and family.

How do I access my SJRCC e-mail account?
Your SJRCC email account can be accessed within MySJRCC by clicking on the email icon at the top of the page after you log in to the portal.

What do I do if I need help with my SJRCC e-mail account?
Contact webhelp@sjrcc.edu or call 1-888-757-2293 (1-888-sjrccweb) for assistance. WebHelp will be available for assistance Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You will receive a response Monday-Friday within 24 hours. The Open Campus is not able to reset passwords or otherwise have access to SJRCC e-mail accounts.

Are the registration process and fees of online courses different than for other courses?
The registration process and course fees are the same as those for on-campus courses. There is, however, an additional $27 distance learning fee per online course.
