St. Johns River Community College, in a partnership with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, announces a new transfer agreement providing SJRCC students a direct connection to Embry-Riddle's bachelor's degree programs.

Reminiscing through the pages of a 1965 Viking yearbook, former student-athlete and local businessman Neal Chancey recently spent an afternoon reliving the "good 'ole days," remembering fellow class and teammates as vividly as though it were yesterday. While 43 years have passed since his glory days in the Tuten Gymnasium, Chancey's office walls display the photos of the infamous Mid-Florida Conference championship team along with his degree from St. Johns River Community College.

Explore Europe through SJRCC’s travel series
St. Johns River Community College will host its fall travel series at the St. Augustine campus. Travelers will explore Europe through videos with the final session, “Great Swiss Cities and Little Europe,” to be held on Wednesday, November 18 at 2:30 p.m. in the SJRCC Library, Room L-112. The travel series is open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Seating is limited, so interested parties should call 808-7474 as soon as possible to reserve a seat.
A Cabaret Showcase at Florida School of the Arts
Join Florida School of the Arts musical theater students for an intimate musical experience as they present “A Cabaret Showcase.” With the main stage transformed into a New York-style cabaret nightclub, audience members will be seated onstage as pop, jazz and musical theater favorites including “Dance: Ten; Looks: Three,” “Anything You Can Do,” and “Baby It’s Cold Outside” are performed by first and second-year students. Pianist Samuel Clein of St. Augustine will accompany the performers.

Piccolo verbally commits to Georgia Southern
St. Johns River Community College catcher Jesse Piccolo has verbally committed to play baseball for Georgia Southern University. A native of Palm Coast Piccolo will sign a NCAA National Letter of Intent with the Eagles on Wednesday November 11. He will enroll at GSU in August of 2010. >>
SJRCC to host golf tournament
The St. Johns River Community College Athletic Association will present its third annual golf classic on November 9. Funds raised will benefit SJRCC’s four athletic programs, said Athletic Director Ross Jones. “The event will help raise the crucial funds needed to enhance scholarships and housing packages – items crucial to recruiting that blue chip player,” he said.

The St. Johns River Community College Phi Theta Kappa honor society held its fall induction ceremony recently. The new members lit candles and recited their oath in front of family and friends at the SJRCC St. Augustine campus. A reception followed the induction ceremony.

Nolan Verbally commits to Florida State
St. Johns River Community College left-handed pitcher Connor Nolan has verbally committed to play baseball for Florida State University. A native of Salem, New Hampshire, Nolan will sign an NCAA National Letter of Intent with the Seminoles on November 11.

Florida School of the Arts presents "The Passion of Dracula"
England 1911, "Mysterious events in Whitby" begins the classic retelling of the Dracula legend to be performed at the Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts on November 6 at 7:30 p.m. and November 7 at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. A traditional melodrama by Bob Hall and David Richmond, the performance promises audience members a spine-tingling evening as Florida School of the Arts students and faculty present "The Passion of Dracula" and unravel the mysteries of Carfax Castle.

Lady Vikings dedicate home game to promote breast cancer awareness
The St. Johns River Community College women’s volleyball team will play its next home game on Thursday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. The game is significant in that the team will dedicate the game to promote breast cancer awareness. Funds raised from the game’s admission, concession stand and other contributions will be donated to support cancer research.

SJRCC graduate Ryan Blanco wins Rising Star Award
Ryan Blanco, R.Ph., owner of Island Family Pharmacy in St. Augustine, has been named the recipient of the Florida Association of Community Colleges “Rising Star Award.”
The award is one of the three LeRoy Collins Distinguished Alumni awards presented during the FACC annual convention. Blanco, along with two additional recipients from participating colleges, will be presented with their awards in November. Congratulations Ryan Blanco!

Telling an employer that he’s the man for the job is a skill that has become a little easier for Antwaun Cooks. The 18-year-old recently completed a career exploration program where he and 40 other students improved their interview and resume skills. Cooks said he now feels he can leave employers with the impression that, “This person has it together.”

As part of the visiting artist series, Florida School of the Arts will present a gallery exhibition for New York artist Karen Bell. The artist will speak about her collection, “Color Field: New Photographs,” at an opening reception on Thursday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery located on St. Johns River Community College’s Palatka campus.

St. Johns River Community College welcomes Gary Killam as the new director of criminal justice training. Killam joins us from the Duval County School Police Department where he served as the deputy chief. He also has 29 years of combined service with the Davie and Plantation police departments and has taught in the criminal justice masters program at Nova Southeastern University for five years.

St. Johns River Community College students Aubrie Simpson and Shawna Petrello recently attended the Lawton Chiles Leadership Corps held at the University of Central Florida. The two-day event was designed to inspire more than 260 college and high school students to become involved in the "Worst to First" movement, a statewide initiative to move Florida from "worst" to "first" in education and child welfare.

Florida School of the Arts will present its fall faculty show with a gallery opening on Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 p.m. The show includes works from six faculty members and will be on display through October 8 in the FloArts main gallery located on the Palatka campus of St. Johns River Community College. Gallery hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

St. Johns River Community College recently held a pinning ceremony to recognize the Associate in Science in Nursing students. The pinning ceremony symbolized the "rite of passage into the nursing profession," said Anna Lebesch, M.Ed., SJRCC's vice president for workforce development. The pin is a reminder to the 26 graduates of their purpose to serve the sick and infirmed.

St. Johns River Community College welcomes Jeannie Petty as the new coordinator of interpreter services. Petty joins us from the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind where she worked for five years.

St. Johns River Community College welcomes Andrew Brandler as the new director of radiologic technology. Brandler joins us from Florida State College at Jacksonville where he was the radiologic technology program manager for three years.

St. Johns River Community College welcomes Virginia Delgado-Oakwood as the new director of health information management. Oakwood joins us from Baptist Health South Florida and brings 18 years of teaching experience in the HIM programs from Florida International University and Miami Dade College.

Florida School of the Arts welcomes new dean
St. Johns River Community College welcomes Alan Hentschel as the new dean of Florida School of the Arts. An established artist and teacher, Hentschel, 57, brings a wealth of international experience and leadership to FloArts. He recently relocated from Illinois where he served six years as the associate dean of fine and applied arts at the College of DuPage, the largest community college in the Midwest.

SJRCC honors Educator Preparation Institute graduates
St. Johns River Community College recently recognized 36 students for completing the teacher certification program. SJRCC‰Ûªs Educator Preparation Institute was developed in 2006 to streamline the certification process for non-education bachelor's degree holders. The participants completed the coursework required to earn a Florida Professional Teaching Certificate.

Testing proves helpful in "college readiness" efforts
For many freshmen, college is anticipated as a time to excel, where students eagerly prepare themselves for success, said St. Johns River Community College counselor Sally Myers. The last thing students want to hear during registration is that their collegiate journey will be delayed by a remedial detour; however, Myers said approximately 70% of students entering community colleges statewide are not considered "college ready" in at least one of the three crucial subject areas - reading, writing and mathematics.

St. Johns River Community College student Aubrie Simpson was recently awarded the Leader of Promise scholarship from Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for students enrolled in two-year colleges. The Leader of Promise scholarship is a $1,000 award given to 30 new PTK members to assist them in completing their associate degrees.

St. Johns River Community College speech instructor John Green, Ph.D. relies upon experience from 30 years of marriage counseling in his second and most recent book, "Thou Shalt Knot in Love and Marriage: Tying the Knot by Exchanging Frank and Formative 'F' Words." Using humor, quotations and personal stories, the book explores interpersonal relationship skills for today's marriages.

The St. Johns River Community College District Board of Trustees welcomes John Nelson, Jr. and Rob Bradley, J.D., as its newest members. Nelson and Bradley were appointed today by Governor Charlie Crist to begin serving their four-year terms this month.

VOICE students prepare for success
After giving her PowerPoint presentation the finishing touch, 16-year-old Misty Watkins now considers herself somewhat of a perfectionist, and that's a good thing. "It has taken me a lot longer to finish projects than the other students," Watkins said, adding that her newfound attention to detail is a positive addition to her work ethic. "I didn't realize I was that meticulous," she said. Watkins is one of the 44 students who recently participated in a new outreach program created to give Putnam County young adults a second chance at career development.

Following its annual commencement, Florida School of the Arts recently bid farewell to 46 graduates now on their way to pursue careers in art galleries, on stage or behind the scenes in the entertainment industry. Many will continue their education at universities before finding their niche in the arts. Florida's first state-supported arts school recently honored the students who received their associate degrees or certificates in the visual or performing arts at the St. Johns River Community College Palatka Campus.

St. Johns River Community College criminal justice academy cadets were recently recognized during a graduation ceremony. Cadets representing St. Johns, Clay, Putnam, Bradford, Duval, Baker, Nassau, Flagler, Volusia and Pinellas counties received their certificates of completion for the law enforcement basic recruit and corrections basic recruit programs.

After embracing St. Johns River Community College with harmony, growth and change for 13 years, Dr. William Simmons will retire as Provost of the Orange Park campus. The 72-year-old community leader has been described as a man admired and loved by many from every walk of life.

SJRCC students face Bright Futures Scholarship changes
Beginning July 1, changes made by the Florida Legislature will no longer allow Bright Futures Scholarships to pay 75% - 100% of tuition and fees. Lawmakers ruled that the scholarships will not pay for the increase in college tuition and will stop at $78 per credit hour for community college students.

Florida School of the Arts will present the Euripides drama "The Trojan Women" June 18 - 20 at 7:30 p.m. and June 21 at 2:30 p.m. on the FloArts Main Stage Theatre at the St. Johns River Community College Palatka campus. Palatka campus professor wins Rotary "Service Above Self Award"
Philosophy and psychology professor Jorge Milanes was recently honored by Palatka Rotarians during the Service Above Self Award ceremony. Milanes, who has served SJRCC for 32 years, was one of five community members selected within the categories of volunteer, student, teacher, employer and employee. Milanes was praised for continually adopting innovative teaching techniques and staying on the cutting edge of technology, adopting internet and smart-classroom advances into his classes. Congratulations Professor Milanes!
SJRCC instructor recollects police tradition, solidarity with book
St. Johns River Community College instructor and St. Augustine resident George Parsons has taken his lifelong passion for law enforcement beyond the beat and into the civilian world with his first published book, "Passing the Baton." The book gives a first-hand account of the experiences, traditions and camaraderie behind his 24-year career in criminal justice.

Apprenticeship graduates give back to SJRCC
Eighteen students from St. Johns River Community College's apprenticeship program recently participated in a graduation ceremony held by the Northeast Florida Builders Association. NEFBA Vice President of Training Keith Ward awarded certificates for completion of apprenticeship training in the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, and carpentry fields. All graduates are now considered journeymen in their respective trades.

St. Johns River Community College Board members said they are ready to take the next step toward offering baccalaureate degrees after reviewing results from an interest survey. Board members recently approved College officials to develop a proposal for two degrees, putting the College one step closer to applying to become a state college by as early as August 2010.>>

Members of St. Johns River Community College's environmental science class were recently presented with one Florida family's mission to educate the public on energy conservation.The Palatka campus was one of 16 stops for inventor Ron Fahs and his family's Electric Vehicle Initiative tour to promote their new plug-in hybrid.

The Alpha Xi Eta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society held its second annual "Pie the Professor" fundraiser recently during St. Johns River Community College's Spring Fling festivities on the St. Augustine Campus. Students were able to bid on the opportunity to toss a pie in the face of their favorite professors, with the proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Donors were also encouraged to remember a cancer victim or honor a cancer survivor with a luminary to be displayed at the St. Johns County Relay for Life event to be held at St. Augustine High School on May 16-17.

SJRCC scrutinizes budget issues, generates hope
Facing a deficit during his first year in office at St. Johns River Community College, President Joe Pickens recently held strategic and candid meetings with faculty and staff to discuss the challenges facing the upcoming budget. While the new president reiterated that he had inherited a financially sound institution thanks to the fiscally prudent decisions made by the District Board of Trustees and his predecessor Robert McLendon, he warned the College was approaching turbulent waters. "We cannot face an unprecedented budget reduction and operate the College without making changes," Pickens said. "While we have a sound fund balance, we can't operate the College on a fund balance. Recurring expenditures will have to be reduced."

FloArts alumnus/TV star Cullen Douglas returns for public lecture
Florida School of the Arts alumnus Cullen Douglas will return to the local stage March 9 and 10 and present a special lecture to students on how to break into show business. The lecture is free and open to the public. Douglas is most recognized for his various television appearances, including roles on "Prison Break," "Private Practice," "Grey's Anatomy" and "CSI."

As of October 1, 2007, SJRCC will no longer provide student enrollment verifications directly or process enrollment certification request forms. SJRCC has authorized the National Student Clearinghouse to provide enrollment verification. See Records
