SJRCC senior professor retires
While St. Augustine may be known for its artistic environment, one local college professor has earned her own reputation for cultivating a similar appreciation for the arts. Over the last 32 years, Nona Mitchell Asconi has taught thousands of St. Johns River Community College students the history of the arts. The humanities professor retired this summer as one of the College’s most senior faculty members. >>

Florida School of the Arts presents faculty exhibition
Florida School of the Arts will present its fall faculty show with a gallery opening on Thursday, September 2 at 7:00 p.m. The show includes works from five faculty members and will be on display through September 28 in the Florida School of the Arts main gallery located on the Palatka campus of St. Johns River Community College. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. >>


SJRCC holds nursing pinning ceremony
St. Johns River Community College recently held a pinning ceremony to recognize the Associate in Science in Nursing students. The pinning ceremony symbolized the “rite of passage into the nursing profession,” said Anna Lebesch, SJRCC’s vice president for workforce development. The pin is a reminder to the 24 graduates of their purpose to serve the sick and infirmed. >>

SJRCC honors local teens in learning initiative
St. Johns River Community College recently held a ceremonies to honor teens from Putnam, Clay and St. Johns counties for their successful completion of the Data Busters program, a computer and job skills program offered by the Northeast Florida Community Action Agency (NFCAA). The College partnered with NFCAA this summer to provide the classroom instruction component. Students also participated in on-site work experiences with local businesses.

St. Johns River Community College is reaching out to the community in search of a new name. With the recent approval of two baccalaureate degree programs, College officials are looking to change the name to better reflect the College’s expanding programs and vision. >>

Ashley and Bailey Diehl watched intently as Florida School of the Arts dance student Lukis Stevens lifted fellow dancer Jessica Birt effortlessly above his head. The technical yet artistic skill is one that the two sisters imagined they, too, could soon perfect.

The students recently enrolled in one of the two new academies debuting at Palatka High School this fall. The Advanced Scholar Academy and the Academy of Performing/Fine Arts resulted from a partnership between St. Johns River Community College and PHS to offer motivated students an advanced academic path.

SJRCC law enforcement and corrections cadets recognized
St. Johns River Community College criminal justice academy cadets were recently recognized during a graduation ceremony. Cadets representing St. Johns, Clay, Putnam, Duval and Flagler counties received their certificates of completion for the law enforcement basic recruit and corrections basic recruit programs. St. Johns County Sheriff's Office Senior Deputy Chuck Griffin addressed the graduates as the guest speaker. >>


Florida School of the Arts honors graduates
Following its annual commencement, Florida School of the Arts recently bid farewell to 42 graduates now on their way to pursue careers in art galleries, on stage or behind the scenes in the entertainment industry. Many will continue their education at universities before finding their niche in the arts. Florida's first state-supported arts school honored the students who received their associate degrees in the visual or performing arts at the St. Johns River Community College Palatka Campus. >>

St. Johns River Community College recently bid farewell to two of its senior faculty members. Faculty, staff and students spent a summer afternoon offering their praise, memories and best wishes to professors Linda Black and Dr. Wayne Watters. New transfer agreement with UNF!
St. Johns River Community College, in partnership with the University of North Florida, announces a new articulation agreement providing SJRCC graduates with a seamless transition into UNF. Beginning this fall, the "UNF/SJRCC Gateway Program" will align SJRCC's associate in arts degree (transfer degree) with UNF's baccalaureate programs for students who intend to continue their education beyond the two-year degree. >>

Flores signs baseball scholarship with Nicholls State University
St. Johns River Community College shortstop Austin Flores has signed an NCAA National Letter of Intent to play baseball for Nicholls State University. A native of Fort Myers, Flores will enroll at NSU later this summer. >>


SJRCC honor society receives multiple awards
Members of the St. Johns River Community College Alpha Xi Eta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society recently attended the PTK state and international conventions and returned with an abundance of honors and accolades in recognition of the chapter's activities. Chapter members recently presented these awards at the regular meeting of the SJRCC District Board of Trustees. >>


Seven Vikings named to 2010 All Mid-Florida Conference baseball team
Seven SJRCC baseball players were recently named to the 2010 All Mid-Florida Conference team by a vote of the conference coaches. The Vikings, who finished second in the Mid-Florida Conference, placed three players each on the first and second teams, as well as one on the honorable mention list. >>

Eighth graders attend SJRCC educational "rally"
"If you want to go somewhere in life, you have to work hard at it," said Hannah Ogle. The 14-year-old from C. H. Price Middle School was one of the 300 eighth graders who attended the College and Career Rally at St. Johns River Community College. Leslie Kelley, 13, said the event helped her put her college goals into perspective. "You can't breeze through high school and be ready for college," she said. >>

SJRCC honors graduates, celebrates 50th commencement
St. Johns River Community College celebrated its 50th Annual Commencement on Friday, April 30 with a record 900 students who were candidates to earn an associate in arts degree, associate in science degree or college credit certificate for the 2009-10 academic year. Approximately 200 graduates participated in the ceremony held at the Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts located on the Orange Park Campus. >>

SJRCC honors Educator Preparation Institute graduates
St. Johns River Community College recently recognized 35 students for completing the teacher certification program. SJRCC's Educator Preparation Institute was developed in 2006 to streamline the certification process for non-education bachelor's degree holders. The participants completed the coursework required to earn a Florida Professional Teaching Certificate. >>

Four-day summer workweek returns in May
Beginning May 3, St. Johns River Community College will operate on a four-day workweek during the summer terms. All campuses will be closed Friday through Sunday through August 13.

The new business hours are as follows:

St. Augustine campus 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Orange Park campus 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Palatka campus 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.


Florida School of the Arts gives its regards to Broadway
Florida School of the Arts students have prepared an evening of popular medleys sure to entertain audience members of all ages. The concert includes songs from Broadway shows created or revived within the last five years. Audience members will recognize medleys from "Avenue Q," "Spamalot," "Aida," "The Lion King," "The Wiz," "Hairspray," "Les Miserables," "Mary Poppins" and "Dream Girls." >>

Local agency donates cars to SJRCC Criminal Justice Academy
The Criminal Justice Academy at St. Johns River Community College received a donation of two police cars from the St. Augustine Police Department. Chief of Police Loran Lueders said he is glad to have the opportunity to help the academy. "We appreciate the quality training being offered by the College and want to do everything we can to support its efforts in training professional law enforcement officers," Lueders said. >>


Florida School of the Arts presents "Spring Dance Gala"
Florida School of the Arts will present its annual "Spring Dance Gala," a colorful and creative experience in ballet, jazz and modern dance featuring original choreography by faculty and innovative creations from the costume and stage design programs. The Gala will be performed on the Main Stage April 15 - 17 at 7:30 p.m. and April 18 at 2:30 p.m. at the St. Johns River Community College Palatka campus. Admission is $5. >>

Viking baseball and softball players spent part of the weekend sharing their knowledge and passion for the game with area youths. Approximately 100 boys and girls participated in the baseball and softball clinics hosted by SJRCC players and coaches. >>

St. Johns River Community College alumnus Neal Chancey was recently inducted into the Florida Community College Activities Association Men's Basketball Hall of Fame. He was honored with a plaque at half-time of the semi-final game of the FCCAA Annual Basketball Tournament held on March 5 in Marianna. >>

Congressman Mica visits SJRCC
Congressman John Mica stopped by the SJRCC campus during a routine visit to Palatka on Monday. After meeting with city and county officials, Mica met with President Joe Pickens to follow up on a previous summer meeting when the two discussed improvements for the College, including growth and renovations for the Florida School of the Arts. The plan includes relocating FloArts' fine arts program downtown. Mica agreed that some funding could be provided as a catalyst, calling the proposed project an "anchor" for future city and College plans. >>


St. Augustine Campus PTK
Following a busy fall semester with a record-setting blood drive, a Thanksgiving bake sale, holiday silent auction and "Breakfast with Santa" among its major activities, the St. Augustine campus Phi Theta Kappa chapter continues to buzz with activity this spring. The chapter recently hosted the PTK torch as it passed through on its way to the International Convention to be held in April. According to faculty advisor Kim Hakala, the torch is being passed from chapter to chapter throughout Florida. >>


SJRCC professor publishes book
St. Johns River Community College professor John Howard, Ph.D., says his latest book demonstrates his love for writing and the often ignored action verb. Unlike his two previous books, the fantasy fiction "The Mysterious Gems - The Beginning" is the English professor's first novel. >>

SJRCC hosts spring travel series
St. Johns River Community College will host its spring travel series at the St. Augustine Campus. Through videos, travelers will explore destinations within Central Europe and the Middle East. The Travel Series is open to the public, with the next session, "Istanbul," to be held on Wednesday, February 17 at 2:30 p.m. in the SJRCC Library, Room L-112. Refreshments will be served. Seating is limited, so interested parties should call 808-7474 as soon as possible to reserve a seat.


FloArts, local artists express "Love for Haiti"
Local artists will turn their passion for art into compassion for Haiti earthquake victims this Valentine's Day. More than 60 pieces of art have been donated to the "Love for Haiti" art sale set for February 14 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. The event will be held at the Florida School of the Arts main gallery on the St. Johns River Community College Palatka campus. >>

Educators ask: Are you College Ready?
For many freshmen, college is anticipated as a time to excel, where students eagerly prepare themselves for success, said St. Johns River Community College counselor Sally Myers. The last thing students want to hear during registration is that their collegiate journey will be delayed by a costly, remedial detour; however, approximately 60 - 70% of students entering community colleges statewide are not considered "college ready" in at least one of the three crucial subject areas - reading, writing and mathematics. >>

The Lady Viking softball team brought joy to four West Putnam youths recently in connection with the annual Diane Reeves Christmas Party sponsored by Interlachen High School. Teammates and IHS alumni Brittani Whitehurst and Kim Traxler approached SJRCC Head Softball Coach Rebecca Bennett with the idea of sponsoring a child for the event. >>

With suggestions ranging from gourmet cooking to hypnosis classes, College officials now have a better idea of which type of courses to offer next semester when St. Johns River Community College introduces its new line of non-credit courses to begin in January. >>

An SJRCC holiday tradition continues through Project Praise
St. Johns River Community College employees were able to help make Christmas a little brighter for 59 children with donations of toys, gifts and other goodies to the Project Praise organization. According to SJRCC employee and Project Praise site coordinator Britt Williams, the College is one of the largest contributors in Putnam County to donate to the federal program managed by Putnam County School District members. The gifts will be delivered just in time for Christmas to children selected by the organization who are experiencing economic hardship. >>

As part of the visiting artist series, Florida School of the Arts will present a gallery exhibition for Pennsylvania artist Mitch Lyons. The artist will speak about his collection, "Inner View: clay monoprints," at an opening reception on Thursday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the FloArts main gallery located on St. Johns River Community College's Palatka campus. >>


SJRCC health care students exceed national testing rates
Graduates of the respiratory care and radiologic technology programs at St. Johns River Community College have exceeded state averages on the credentialing exams, according to recent results. Thomas Baxter, SJRCC's respiratory care program director, announced a 100% passing rate among its graduates in the College's newest health care program, respiratory care. All graduates passed the Certified Respiratory Therapist exam and the Registered Respiratory Therapist written exam, beating the national average of 60%, according to Baxter. >>


Former SJRCC President Robert L. McLendon Jr. honored with award
Former St. Johns River Community College President Robert L. McLendon, Jr. was recently honored during the 60th Annual Florida Association of Community Colleges Convention in Orlando. McLendon was presented with the Dr. James L. Wattenbarger Award by the Florida Council of Community College Presidents for outstanding service to the community college system. The prestigious award is given annually in honor of Wattenbarger, who is considered to be the father of the community college system. >>


Vikings climb to top ten ranking
The St. Johns River Community College Viking basketball team is currently 9 - 1 as of its Nov. 30 game against Brewton Parker College, reported basketball head coach Buster Harvey. The College is ranked 9th in the regional/state rankings. >>

The AIDS Memorial Quilt on Display at SJRCC
St. Johns River Community College will display a block of The AIDS Memorial Quilt in its St. Augustine Campus Library. This will be the second year that SJRCC has been selected to display a portion of The Quilt. On loan from the Northeast Florida Chapter of The NAMES Project Foundation, the block is approximately 12 square feet and consists of individual memorial panels personalized by family members. The Quilt originated in 1987 as a memorial for those who died of AIDS and to help emphasize the devastating impact of the disease. >>


SJRCC golf classic raises funds to benefit athletic scholarships and facilities
The St. Johns River Community College athletic department recently hosted its third annual golf classic at the Royal St. Augustine Golf & Country Club. Thanks to the participants and sponsor Beck Automotive Group, the athletic department will continue its recruiting efforts with additional funds for its four athletic programs, said Athletic Director Ross Jones. "The event raised the crucial funds needed to enhance scholarships and facility upgrades - items that are imperative when recruiting that blue chip player," he said. >>

The gallery show will open with a reception on Monday, December 7 at 7 p.m. and will run through December 15 in the FloArts main gallery located on the Palatka campus of St. Johns River Community College. Large images of students' video work will also be projected on the outside walls of the school's buildings during the reception. SJRCC's Phi Theta Kappa organization to hold silent auction
St. Johns River Community College's St. Augustine chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society will be holding a silent auction to benefit the PTK scholarship fund on Saturday, December 5. Former SJRCC athlete shares past and present
Reminiscing through the pages of a 1965 Viking yearbook, former student-athlete and local businessman Neal Chancey recently spent an afternoon reliving the "good 'ole days," remembering fellow class and teammates as vividly as though it were yesterday. While 43 years have passed since his glory days in the Tuten Gymnasium, Chancey's office walls display the photos of the infamous Mid-Florida Conference championship team along with his degree from St. Johns River Community College. >>

Explore Europe through SJRCC's travel series
St. Johns River Community College will host its fall travel series at the St. Augustine campus. Travelers will explore Europe through videos with the final session, "Great Swiss Cities and Little Europe," to be held on Wednesday, November 18 at 2:30 p.m. in the SJRCC Library, Room L-112. A Cabaret Showcase at Florida School of the Arts
Join Florida School of the Arts musical theater students for an intimate musical experience as they present "A Cabaret Showcase." With the main stage transformed into a New York-style cabaret nightclub, audience members will be seated onstage as pop, jazz and musical theater favorites including "Dance: Ten; Looks: Three," "Anything You Can Do," and "Baby It's Cold Outside" are performed by first and second-year students. Pianist Samuel Clein of St. Augustine will accompany the performers. >>

Piccolo verbally commits to Georgia Southern
St. Johns River Community College catcher Jesse Piccolo has verbally committed to play baseball for Georgia Southern University. A native of Palm Coast Piccolo will sign a NCAA National Letter of Intent with the Eagles on Wednesday November 11. He will enroll at GSU in August of 2010. >>


SJRCC to host golf tournament
The St. Johns River Community College Athletic Association will present its third annual golf classic on November 9. Funds raised will benefit SJRCC's four athletic programs, said Athletic Director Ross Jones. "The event will help raise the crucial funds needed to enhance scholarships and housing packages - items crucial to recruiting that blue chip player," he said. >>

Florida School of the Arts presents "The Passion of Dracula"
England 1911, "Mysterious events in Whitby" begins the classic retelling of the Dracula legend to be performed at the Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts on November 6 at 7:30 p.m. and November 7 at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. A traditional melodrama by Bob Hall and David Richmond, the performance promises audience members a spine-tingling evening as Florida School of the Arts students and faculty present "The Passion of Dracula" and unravel the mysteries of Carfax Castle. >>

Lady Vikings dedicate home game to promote breast cancer awareness
The St. Johns River Community College women's volleyball team will play its next home game on Thursday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. The game is significant in that the team will dedicate the game to promote breast cancer awareness. Funds raised from the game's admission, concession stand and other contributions will be donated to support cancer research. >>


SJRCC graduate Ryan Blanco wins Rising Star Award
Ryan Blanco, R.Ph., owner of Island Family Pharmacy in St. Augustine, has been named the recipient of the Florida Association of Community Colleges "Rising Star Award." The award is one of the three LeRoy Collins Distinguished Alumni awards presented during the FACC annual convention. Blanco, along with two additional recipients from participating colleges, will be presented with their awards in November. Congratulations Ryan Blanco! >>


VOICE students prepare for success
Telling an employer that he's the man for the job is a skill that has become a little easier for Antwaun Cooks. The 18-year-old recently completed a career exploration program where he and 40 other students improved their interview and resume skills. Cooks said he now feels he can leave employers with the impression that, "This person has it together." >>
