Animals
in Translation: Using the Mysteries of Autism to Decode Animal
Behavior - Publisher's
Marketing: " Temple Grandin's "Animals in
Translation" speaks in the clear voice of a woman who
emerged from the other side of autism, bringing with her an
extraordinary message about how animals think and feel. Temple's
professional training as an animal scientist and her history
as a person with autism have given her a perspective like
that of no other expert in the field. Standing at the intersection
of autism and animals, she offers unparalleled observations
and groundbreaking ideas about both.
Autistic people can often think the way animals think --
in fact, Grandin and co-author Catherine Johnson see autism
as a kind of way station on the road from animals to humans
-- putting autistic people in the perfect position to translate
"animal talk." Temple is a faithful guide into
their world, exploring animal pain, fear, aggression, love,
friendship, communication, learning, and, yes, even animal
genius. Not only are animals much smarter than anyone ever
imagined, in some cases animals are out-and-out brilliant.
The sweep of "Animals in Translation" is immense,
merging an animal scientist's thirty years of study with
her keen perceptions as a person with autism -- Temple sees
what others cannot.
Among its provocative ideas, the book:
# argues that language is not a requirement for consciousness
-- and that animals do have consciousness
# applies the autism theory of "hyper-specificity"
to animals, showing that animals and autistic people are
so sensitive to detail that they "can't see the forest
for the trees" -- a talent as well as a "deficit"
# explores the "interpreter" in the normal human
brain that filters out detail, leaving people blind to much
of the reality thatsurrounds them -- a reality animals and
autistic people see, sometimes all too clearly
# explains how animals have "superhuman" skills:
animals have animal genius
# compares animals to autistic savants, declaring that
animals may in fact be autistic savants, with special forms
of genius that normal people do not possess and sometimes
cannot even see
# examines how humans and animals use their emotions to
think, to decide, and even to predict the future
# reveals the remarkable abilities of handicapped people
and animals
# maintains that the single worst thing you can do to an
animal is to make it feel afraid
Temple Grandin is like no other author on the subject of
animals because of her training and because of her autism:
understanding animals is in her blood and in her bones."

The
Collected Letters of C. S. Lewis - Publisher's
Marketing: "The life and mind of C. S. Lewis have
fascinated those who have read his works. This collection
of his personal letters reveals a unique intellectual journey.
The first of a three-volume collection, this volume contains
letters from Lewis's boyhood, his army days in World War I,
and his early academic life at Oxford. Here we encounter the
creative, imaginative seeds that gave birth to some of his
most famous works. At age sixteen, Lewis begins writing
to Arthur Greeves, a boy his age in Belfast who later becomes
one of his most treasured friends. Their correspondence
would continue over the next fifty years. In his letters
to Arthur, Lewis admits that he has abandoned the Christian
faith. "I believe in no religion," he says. "There
is absolutely no proof for any of them."
Shortly after arriving at Oxford, Lewis is called away
to war. Quickly wounded, he returns to Oxford, writing home
to describe his thoughts and feelings about the horrors
of war as well as the early joys of publication and academic
success.
In 1929 Lewis writes to Arthur of a friend ship that was
to greatly influence his life and writing. "I was up
till 2: 30 on Monday talking to the Anglo-Saxon professor
Tolkien who came back with me to College ... and sat discoursing
of the gods and giants & Asgard for three hours ..."
Gradually, as Lewis spends time with Tolkien and other friends,
he admits in his letters to a change of view on religion.
In 1930 he writes, "Whereas once I would have said,
'Shall I adopt Christianity', I now wait to see whether
it will adopt me ..."
The Collected Letters of C. S. Lewis, Volume I offers an
inside perspective to Lewis's thinking during his formative
years. Walter Hooper'sinsightful notes and biographical
appendix of all the correspondents make this an irreplaceable
reference for those curious about the life and work of one
of the most creative minds of the modern era.
C. S. Lewis was a prolific letter writer, and his personal
correspondence reveals much of his private life, reflections,
friendships, and the progress of his thought. This second
of a three-volume collection contains the letters Lewis
wrote after his conversion to Christianity, as he began
a lifetime of serious writing. Lewis corresponded with many
of the twentieth century's major literary figures, including
J. R. R. Tolkien and Dorothy Sayers. Here we encounter a
surge of letters in response to a new audience of laypeople
who wrote to him after the great success of his BBC radio
broadcasts during World War II -- talks that would ultimately
become his masterwork, Mere Christianity.
Volume II begins with C. S. Lewis writing his first major
work of literary history, The Allegory of Love, which established
him as a scholar with imaginative power. These letters trace
his creative journey and recount his new circle of friends,
"The Inklings," who meet regularly to share their
writing. Tolkien reads aloud chapters of his unfinished
The Lord of the Rings, while Lewis shares portions of his
first novel, Out of the Silent Planet. Lewis's weekly letters
to his brother, Warnie, away serving in the army during
World War II, lead him to begin writing his first spiritual
work, The Problem of Pain.
After the serialization of The Screwtape Letters, the director
of religious broadcasting at the BBC approached Lewis and
the "Mere Christianity" talks were born. With
his new broadcasting career, Lewiswas inundated with letters
from all over the world. His faithful, thoughtful responses
to numerous questions reveal the clarity and wisdom of his
theological and intellectual beliefs.
Volume II includes Lewis's correspondence with great writers
such as Owen Barfield, Arthur C. Clarke, Sheldon Vanauken,
and Dom Bede Griffiths. The letters address many of Lewis's
interests -- theology, literary criticism, poetry, fantasy,
and children's stories -- as well as reveal his relation
ships with close friends and family. But what is apparent
throughout this volume is how this quiet bachelor professor
in England touched the lives of many through an amazing
discipline of personal correspondence. Walter Hooper's insightful
notes and compre hensive biographical appendix of the correspon
dents make this an irreplaceable reference for those curious
about the life and work of one of the most creative minds
of the modern era."

"Jeannie Sterling, host of a late-night NYC talk show,
vents with her listeners about everyday injustices, from rude
cell phone users and poor gym etiquette to bad drivers and
negligent pet owners -- the many aggravations of modern urban
life. An idealistic California girl raised by two free-spirited
parents, Jeannie believes in a life of value through activism.
She's passionate about making a difference, about making the
world a better place, one annoying person at a time. For
as long as she can remember, success in her career has been
more than enough. But after all these years of being single,
Jeannie realizes that some of the pieces of her perfect
puzzle aren't fitting quite right. The people she thought

and solved in the neat three-hour window of her show. Her
best friend, Luce, is growing distant and distracted; her
wayward father unexpectedly moves in; and an ambiguous relationship
with her college crush ignites.
When the radio station is bought by the maverick mogul

| Eco-Terrorism:
Radical Environmental and Animal Liberation Movements
- Publisher's Marketing:
"Radical environmentalism and its progeny, "eco-terrorism,"
is a modern phenomenon. It is a movement far removed from
the elite conservationists of the late 1800s and the mainstream
environmental groups that emerged later. Drawn from the
same pool of concerned individuals who comprise memberships
in groups like Greenpeace, the Sierra Club, and the Wilderness
Society, disaffected environmentalists have turned from
political lobbying to direct action in the form of widespread
property destruction and other types of crime and terror.
Here, the author exposes the activities of radical groups
determined to make their mark in the movement to protect
the earth and its creatures from those they view as predators.
He covers the major groups as well as less well-known ones
and provides a careful portrait of who they are, what they
do, and how to address them. The growth, from the 1980s
through the present day, of organizations involved in eco-terror
is noticeable and significant. Such groups have caused millions
of dollars worth of damage throughout the country. The FBI
estimates that the ALF/ELF have committed more than 600
criminal acts in the United States since 1996, resulting
in damages in excess of $43 million. Tactics include pulling
up survey stakes, tree-spiking, arson, and other methods.
Most groups will claim responsibility for their actions,
just as other types of terrorist groups will take responsibility
for theirs. Eco-Terrorism takes an objective look at the
most radical groups and their terrorist activities in the
United States, including case examples and analysis of the
methods and rhetoric the groups employ. It uncovers the
losses both to individuals and the community as aresult
of these methods, and it describes the ideologies, motivations,
history, and activities of the political movements that
have been labeled environmental terrorism."

| Evolution
for Everyone: How Darwin's Theory Can Change the Way We
Think about Our Lives - Publisher's
Marketing: ""What is the biological reason
for gossip?
For laughter? For the creation of art?
Why do dogs have curly tails?
What can microbes tell us about morality?"
These and many other questions are tackled by renowned evolutionist
David Sloan Wilson in this witty and groundbreaking new
book. With stories that entertain as much as they inform,
Wilson outlines the basic principles of evolution and shows
how, properly understood, they can illuminate the length
and breadth of creation, from the origin of life to the
nature of religion. Now everyone can move beyond the sterile
debates about creationism and intelligent design to share
Darwin’ s panoramic view of animal and human life,
seamlessly connected to each other.
Evolution, as Wilson explains, is not just about dinosaurs
and human origins, but about why all species behave as they
do— from beetles that devour their own young, to bees
that function as a collective brain, to dogs that are smarter
in some respects than our closest ape relatives. And basic
evolutionary principles are also the foundation for humanity’
s capacity for symbolic thought, culture, and morality.
In example after example, Wilson sheds new light on Darwin’
s grand theory and how it can be applied to daily life.
By turns thoughtful, provocative, and daringly funny, Evolution
for Everyone addresses some of the deepest philosophical
and social issues of this or any age. In helping us come
to a deeper understanding of human beings and our place
in the world, it might also help us to improve that world."

| Legends
of Blood: The Vampire in History and Myth - Publisher's
Marketing: "Of all the fictional monsters that
have pierced society's collective consciousness, none has
been so persistent or seductive as the vampire. Tales of
the undead preying upon the blood of the living have survived
in one form or another for thousands of years and across
cultures. Legends of Blood traces this fascinating history
from the myths of Ancient Greece and Egypt through the Gothic
literature of 19th century Europe and up to present day,
emphasizing how the tales of this alluring creature tap
into humanity's most basic and primal fears. Wayne Bartlett
and Flavia Idriceanu's highly readable yet impeccably researched
book is a must-have for vampire enthusiasts and scholars
alike. Drawing upon such sources as obscure and ancient
myths, Romantic literature, and the novels of Anne Rice,
Legends of Blood sheds new light on the pervasiveness of
the vampire myth. Bartlett and Idriceanu illustrate the
relationships that subsist between vampires and witchcraft,
religion and sexuality, and show how the myth has adapted
to the various intellectual trends of European history.
Other topics include "real-life" vampirism such
as the macabre tale of Elizabeth Bathory who murdered some
650 girls and bathed in their blood to restore her legendary
beauty."

Glass Castle: A Memoir - Publisher's

remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory
look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely
vibrant. When sober, Jeannette's brilliant and charismatic
father captured his children's imagination, teaching them
physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But
when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother
was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and
didn't want the responsibility of raising a family. The
Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They
fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually
found their way to New York. Their parents followed them,
choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered.

loyal, family. Jeannette Walls has a story to tell, and
tells it brilliantly, without an ounce of self-pity."

| Pesticides:
A Toxic Time Bomb in Our Midst - Publisher's
Marketing: "Pesticide exposure has long been
a cause for concern, and with good reason. Studies have
shown that all persons, but especially children, pregnant
women, farmers, farmworkers, and the elderly, may experience
negative health effects from pesticide exposure. These effects
may include acute poisoning, cancer, neurological damage,
birth defects, reduced sperm count, suppressed immune systems,
and reproductive and developmental harm. This book is a
comprehensive examination of pesticide use, pesticide harm,
and alternatives to harmful pesticides. Levine highlights
the role of farming, because a substantial majority--70
percent or more annually--of pesticides are applied in agricultural
uses, thereby making their way into the food chain and into
the water supply. More than 20 types of pesticides have
been detected in U.S. groundwater, and it is believed that
nearly 100 have the potential to invade our municipal water
systems. Some level of pesticide contamination has been
detected in every state, in both urban and agricultural
areas. Outside of agriculture, people are exposed to pesticides
primarily in the home. Approximately 90 percent of all households
in the nation use pesticides, and the number and concentration
of these agents indoors has been shown to be greater than
outdoors. Given that Americans now spend nearly 90 percent
of each day indoors, this is an issue of real concern. In
addition to homes, suburban and rural corporate parks are
also affected. Schools are another worrisome venue. In too
many of our 110,000 school districts, untrained persons
are making critical decisions about the use of pesticides
in school buildings and on school grounds. No other book
currently examinesthis issue in such breadth and depth."

| Acting
Lessons for Teachers: Using Performance Skills in the Classroom
- Publisher's Marketing:
"Acting Lessons for Teachers presents a solid theoretical
foundation for the pedagogical benefits of enthusiatic teaching.
Simply put, students are more engaged, misbehave less, and
learn better from teachers who teach enthusiastically. A
teacher's enthusiasm for his or her subject matter can be
contagious. Since the dynamic of the classroom is similar
to that of the stage in terms of speaker-listener relationships,
the acting craft offers teachers a model for the skills
and strategies that could be incorporated in their work
to convey more enthusiasm for the material and for the students.
This book presents concrete descriptions of the specific
acting strategies that would benefit the teacher: physical
and vocal animation, teacher role-playing, strategic entrances
and exits, humor, props, suspense and surprise, and creative
use of space. Special attention is given to the potential
advantage of instructional technology as a modern-day prop.
Strategies are explained in terms of their importance and
ease of incorporation into the classroom. Each is proposed
as a skill that can be learned by any teachers who have
the desire to enliven their teaching. Student descriptions
of their own experience with teachers' use of acting strategies
add real examples for each lesson. Finally, testimony of
award-winning classroom teachers from a variety of disciplines
and age levels provides evidence of the wide and easy applicability
of these strategies."

Rise of the Blogosphere - Publisher's
Marketing: "In 1985 The WELL, a dial-up discussion
board based on the utilization of desktop computer technology,
invited popular participation in one of the first examples
of what would eventually evolve into the "blog"-
an interactive website allowing reaction comments to initial
statements, and now providing the primary Internet means
for dialogue. The WELL began with the phrase: "You
own your own words." Though almost everything else
about online discussion has changed in the two decades since,
those words still describe its central premise, and this
basic idea underlies both the power and the popularity of
blogging today. Appropriately enough, it also describes
American journalism as it existed a century and a half before
The WELL was organized, before the concept of popular involvement
in the press was nearly swept away on the rising tide of
commercial and professional journalism. In this book, which
is the first to provide readers with a cultural/historical
account of the blog, as well as the first to analyze the
different aspects of this growing phenomenon in terms of
its past, Aaron Barlow provides lay readers with a thorough
history and analysis of a truly democratic technology that
is becoming more important to our lives every day. The current
popularity of political blogs can be traced back to currents
in American culture apparent even at the time of the Revolution.
At that time there was no distinct commercial and professional
press; the newspapers, then, provided a much more direct
outlet for the voices of the people. In the nineteenth century,
as the press became more commercial, it moved away from
its direct involvement with politics, taking on an "observer"
stance--removing itselffrom the people, as well as from
politics. In the twentieth century, the press became increasingly
professional, removing itself once more from the general
populace. Americans, however, still longed to voice their
opinions with the freedom that the press had once provided.
Today, blogs are providing the means for doing just that."

popularity. Professionals, punks, and feminists are embracing
this ancient craft, an activity that was previously relegated
to the realm of the "traditional" woman, the mother
and homemaker. Books that cater to this new generation of
knitters are flooding the market with patterns for such
contemporary projects as iPod cozies, yoga mat bags, and
laptop covers. The attitude of these publications is decidedly
hip, featuring models sporting tattoos or piercings. Missing

these people? Why knitting, why now? Intrepid journalist
and avid knitter Kerry Wills set out to find out. She takes
us on a fascinating tour through the history of knitting,
exploring the lives of such women as the revolutionary Elizabeth
Zimmermann, whose strong opinions and classic book, Knitting
without Tears, popularized knitting in the 1970s, anticipating
current trends. Wills visits knitting groups that meet at
such places as a feminist vegetarian restaurant, churches,

who make shawls for people with cancer. She also explores

Sports Industry's War on Athletes -
Publisher's Marketing: "In
America, sports are a popular passion, and an astoundingly
lucrative business as well. Americans pay out millions of
dollars annually for channels and stadiums to bring them
closer to their favorite players, and every year, young
athletes go to greater lengths to reach those exalted fields
of play themselves. Unfortunately, in the quest to offer
an ever more compelling product, the sports industry is
blind to the manner in which that product is created. Doping,
playing through injury, and eating disorders are widespread
problems in both professional and college athletics, and
speak volumes about the lengths to which people will go
in order to make themselves successful. Dirty play, hazing,
and cheating are common even at the lowest levels. Most
troubling of all, however, are the societal problems created
by the sports industry, which include racism, sexism, classism,
and homophobia. Peter and Laura Finley's comprehensive work
confronts the many problems facing athletics today. Using
numerous examples (both historical and current), they begin
with the issue as they exist at the highest levels and as
they are represented in the media. They then go on to look
at how the values and models expressed by professionals
are adopted and utilized by coaches, parents, and eventually
by amateur athletes of all ages. Finally, the Finleys provide
recommendations for improving the sports environment in
America, suggesting ways we can work to counteract some
of these many harmful influences to ensure that sports realize
their potential as a positive and rewarding activity."

Now Allon is back in Venice, when a terrible explosion in

and she had been the one pure love of his youth. Then came
Vietnam, and a world gone crazy separated them. Annie had
long since married Cliff Baxter, the town's chief of police
and its most powerful man, an unfaithful, yet brutally possessive
husband, a force more dangerous than any Landry has met
on the fields of battle. Landry has vowed: No more violence.
No more killing. But now he has to fight one final, unavoidable
battle, a battle that will be both his deadliest and his
most personal. Confronted with his last chance at redemption,
he must violate his oath - calling on all of his skills
learned from a lifetime in military and intelligence service
to rescue Annie from her sadistic husband, a man equally
skilled in the tactics and techniques of death. Landry knows
he's got to act rationally and with deadly cunning. Faced
with a simple, stark choice - a new life, or no life at
all - Landry takes the one critical step in the only direction
he can: into the inevitable, explosive confrontation that
will decide the fate of three people gripped in a fatal
triangle."

John Corey convalesces in the Long Island township of Southold,

General's Daughter - Publisher's
Marketing: "Paul Brenner is a member of the
Army's elite undercover investigative unit, with the authority
to arrest any military person anywhere in the world. He
has always wondered just how far he could push his power.
He is about to find out. Captain Ann Campbell is the daughter
of General "Fighting Joe" Campbell. She is a West
Point graduate, beautiful, bright, and the pride of Fort
Hadley. Her raped and murdered body is found on the firing
range, naked and spread-eagled, her hands and feet bound
with tent rope - but there is no sign of a struggle. All
of Brenner's instincts tell him to avoid the case. Yet Brenner's
natural curiosity is aroused. He takes the case. As if that
decision weren't reckless enough, he finds himself teamed
with rape specialist Cynthia Sunhill, a woman with whom
Brenner once had a tempestuous, ultimately doomed affair
and with whom the temperamental sparks still flare. Together,
they will discover the truth about the brass above them:
that beneath the neatly pressed uniforms, the military codes
of honor, pride, and order hide a corruption as rank as
Ann Campbell's own astonishing secret life. Paul and Cynthia
learn that any number of people were sexually, emotionally,
and dangerously involved with the Army's "golden girl",
and any one of them could have wanted her dead. Far more
than a richly plotted murder mystery, Nelson DeMille's The
General's Daughter is a resonant and scathing portrayal
of military life, demonstrating, unforgettably, how its
members are different from - and at the same time, so much
like - the rest of us."

Literally. Just ask Thomas C. Flood. Waking up after a

too.
For some couples, the whole biting-and-blood thing would

Jody should teach Tommy about his new superpowers (and how
much he needs to learn on his own). Plus there's Tommy's
cute new minion, sixteen-year-old goth girl Abby Normal.
(Well, "someone" has to run errands during daylight

Making the relationship work, however, is the least of
Jody and Tommy's problems. Word has it that the vampire
who nibbled on Jody wasn't supposed to be recruiting any
new members into the club. Even worse, Tommy's erstwhile

Anxiety: How the News Media Scare Women -
Publisher's Marketing: "A
strange duality affects the news media today. The more that
women advance in the worlds of business, academia, medicine,
and law, the gloomier news about women and their achievements
becomes. As statistics report the rise in the number of
women obtaining college and advanced degrees, the media
increasingly tells them that this is a terrible mistake
and that only by returning to traditional roles of wife
and mother can women find true happiness. The message is
that if women do achieve, they will make themselves and
their families miserable. This message, often based on specious
"scientific" studies and reports, gets played
over and over again in televised newscasts, print newspapers,
the internet, and other media outlets purporting to be objective.
Rivers, a journalist who has written extensively in the
behavioral sciences, exposes the many ways news media distort
stories about women. According to Rivers, these stories
"sell" because they play to the fears of affluent
women, one of the most desirable consumer markets. Rivers's
topics, literally "pulled from the headlines,"
include negative representations of working mothers and
"latch-key" kids, stories that exaggerate the
perils of childcare and divorce, media treatment of powerful
political figures like Elizabeth Dole, Teresa Heinz, and
Hillary Clinton, and news as "poli-porn" (sex
and death-obsessed tales of pretty, white girls and women
like Jon-Benet Ramsay, Chandra Levy, and Natalee Holloway).
Rivers also revisits ongoing debates about male and female
brainpower and the claim that the attention paid to girls
in schools is ruining boys' chances for achievement and
success. She examines how the media has collaborated withGeorge
W. Bush and the political right to wage war on birth control
and abortion. Her conclusion suggests what can and must
be done to halt the news media's assault on women."

Rethinking Thin: The New Science of Weight Loss--And
the Myths and Realities of Dieting -
Publisher's Marketing: "In
this eye-opening book, "New York Times "science
writer Gina Kolata shows that our society’ s obsession
with dieting and weight loss is less about keeping trim
and staying healthy than about money, power, trends, and
impossible ideals.
"Rethinking Thin "is at once an account of the
place of diets in American society and a provocative critique
of the weight-loss industry. Kolata’ s account of
four determined dieters’ progress through a study
comparing the Atkins diet to a conventional low-calorie
one becomes a broad tale of science and society, of social
mores and social sanctions, and of politics and power.
"Rethinking Thin "asks whether words like "willpower
"are really applicable when it comes to eating and
body weight. It dramatizes what it feels like to spend a
lifetime struggling with one’ s weight and fantasizing
about finally, at long last, getting thin. It tells the
little-known story of the science of obesity and the history
of diets and dieting— scientific and social phenomena
that made some people rich and thin and left others fat
and miserable. And it offers commonsense answers to questions
about weight, eating habits, and obesity— giving us
a better understanding of the weight that is right for our
bodies."

Perfect
Girls, Starving Daughters: The Frightening New Normalcy of
Hating Your Body - Publisher's
Marketing: ""Why does every one of my friends
have an eating disorder, or, at the very least, a screwed-up
approach to food and fitness?" writes journalist Courtney
E. Martin. The new world culture of eating disorders and food
and body issues affects virtually all -- not just a rare few
-- of today's young women. They are your sisters, friends,
and colleagues -- a generation told that they could "be
anything," who instead heard that they had to "be
everything." Driven by a relentless quest for perfection,
they are on the verge of a breakdown, exhausted from overexercising,
binging, purging, and depriving themselves to attain an unhealthy
ideal.
An emerging new talent, Courtney E. Martin is the voice
of a young generation so obsessed with being thin that their
consciousness is always focused inward, to the detriment
of their careers and relationships. Health and wellness,
joy and love have come to seem ancillary compared to the
desire for a perfect body. Even though eating disorders
first became generally known about twenty-five years ago,
they have burgeoned, worsened, become more difficult to
treat and more fatal (50 percent of anorexics who do not
respond to treatment die within ten years). Consider these
statistics:
Ten million Americans suffer from eating disorders.
Seventy million people worldwide suffer from eating disorders.
More than half of American women between the ages of eighteen
and twenty-five would pre fer to be run over by a truck
or die young than be fat.
More than two-thirds would rather be mean or stupid.
Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any
psychological disease.
In "Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters," Martin
offers originalresearch from the front lines of the eating
disorders battlefield. Drawn from more than a hundred interviews
with sufferers, psychologists, nutritionists, sociocultural
experts, and others, her exposé reveals a new generation
of "perfect girls" who are obsessive-compulsive,
overachieving, and self-sacrificing in multiple -- and often
dangerous -- new ways. Young women are "told over and
over again," Martin notes, "that we can be anything.
But in those affirmations, assurances, and assertions was
a concealed pressure, an unintended message: You are special.
You are worth something. But you need to be perfect to live
up to that specialness."
With its vivid and often heartbreaking personal stories,
"Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters" has the power
both to shock and to educate. It is a true call to action
and cannot be missed."

Deal
Breakers: When to Work on a Relationship and When to Walk
Away - Publisher's
Marketing: " This is a book about men. Not all
men, just emotionally unhealthy men. The ones who make you
question, "Is it him or is it me? Am I making too big
a deal out of this? I try to tell him how I feel, but he says
I'm overreacting or needy or it's all my fault." Relationships
are hard work, but how hard should they be? When do you
know you are struggling "too hard" to make a relationship
succeed?
"Deal Breakers" is about getting out of this
"relationship purgatory" -- where the present
is unfulfilling and the future is the only thing you can
hope for. But there is no magic future. If he won't work
on problems today, it's unlikely they'll ever be resolved.
And passively hoping for change will only cost you years
of depression or expensive therapy.
Dr. Bethany Marshall is here to remind women that relationships
-- like "business" relationships -- are deals.
In the business world, a deal breaker is the one nonnegotiable
term that, if not agreed to, means the deal is off. But
in the world of relationships, identifying your deal breaker
can be much more promising, as it holds out the possibility
of helping you to understand where the relationship has
gone wrong, what needs to be done in order to make it better,
and when to walk away because you're doing more work than
him to fix it.
A deal breaker is a boundary that smart people set for
themselves because they know that falling in love can make
them do stupid things. Through case studies, deal breaker
scenarios, and suggested courses of action, "Deal Breakers"
expertly guides frustrated women. By defining your deal
breaker, you hold all the power to create the happiness
you deserve."

rescue of the family will bring and he sets a "perfectly

one thing that remains most real to him: his endless love

Is Miscellaneous: The Power of the New Digital Disorder
- Publisher's Marketing:
"Business visionary and bestselling author David Weinberger
shows how the digital revolution is radically changing the
way we make sense of our lives Human beings are information
omnivores: we are constantly collecting, labeling, and organizing
data. But today, the shift from the physical to the digital
is mixing, burning, and ripping our lives apart. In the
past, everything had its one place— the physical world
demanded it— but now everything has its places: multiple
categories, multiple shelves. Simply put, everything is
suddenly miscellaneous.
In "Everything Is Miscellaneous," David Weinberger
charts the new principles of digital order that are remaking
business, education, politics, science, and culture. In
his rollicking tour of the rise of the miscellaneous, he
examines why the Dewey decimal system is stretched to the
breaking point, how Rand McNally decides what information
not to include in a physical map (and why Google Earth is
winning that battle), how Staples stores emulate online
shopping to increase sales, why your children’ s teachers
will stop having them memorize facts, and how the shift
to digital music stands as the model for the future in virtually
every industry. Finally, he shows how by “going miscellaneous,
” anyone can reap rewards from the deluge of information
in modern work and life.
From A to Z, "Everything Is Miscellaneous" will

"Read the latest studies on the effectiveness of religious-based
services—and the problems revealed in the assessment
The Charitable Choice provision and the Bush Administration’s
National Faith-Based Initiative have broadened the scope
of social services delivered through faith-based organizations.
There are expectations that these faith-based social service
providers will be more effective—but how should that
effectiveness be measured? Faith-Based Social Services:
Measures, Assessments, and Effectiveness explains the nature
and quality of religion-based social service delivery while
serving as a point of reference for future research and
work. This unique source tackles the important, complex
issue of measuring the effectiveness of faith-based social

| Feeding
the Fire: The Lost History and Uncertain Future of Mankind's
Energy Addiction - Publisher's
Marketing: "From the first spark created by
human hands thousands of years ago, mankind has grown dependent
on nature’ s vast stores of energy to build, explore,
and experiment. Our expanding knowledge and technologies
have come from the felling of forests to the harnessing
of wind and water, from the burning of coal and oil to tapping
the energy of the atom. Energy does more than heat our homes
and fill our gas tanks; it fuels our imaginations. Our future
is inextricably linked to energy, and in this groundbreaking
book, Mark Eberhart examines our historic quest for power
and tackles the brutal realization that there are limits
to the energy Earth can provide.
In Western society, we treat energy as a given— the
background noise of modern life. But as worldwide energy
demand grows, supplies are, at best, holding steady—
and at worst, shrinking. The implications of our dependence
are enormous. And while there is evidence that great cultures
of the past— the Maya, Anasazi, Easter Islanders—
collapsed when their energy resources were exhausted, Eberhart
argues that we have the responsibility and the ability to
develop renewable energy sources now.
Eberhart leads us on a tour through the history of energy,
how it was formed and how it evolved, and reveals how we
became energy-dependent creatures. With an unblinking eye,
he takes a close look at the consequences of our energy
appetite, and, most important, imagines a secure energy
future that we can all play a part in achieving.
Enlightening, bold, and practical, "Feeding the Fire"
weaves together history, science, and current affairs to
create an important and compelling thesis about humanity’
s energyneeds— and draws a hard line on the imperative
need to avert the catastrophe that looms if we continue
on our present course."

Story of Costume - Publisher's
Marketing: "An essential reference for parents,
teachers, librarians, and anyone working with children's
theater groups.
This full-color introduction to historical costume was created
especially for children by John Peacock, a former senior
costume designer for the BBC. With over 320 illustrations
plus clearly written descriptions, the book offers a broad

characters they are studying really looked like.
The book contains detailed drawings of men, women, and children

the most eye-catching trends in costume history are featured,
including knights' armor from the thirteenth century, the
exaggeratedly pointed shoes worn in the fifteenth century,
and the curled and powdered wigs of the eighteenth century.
Each costume, whether worn by an Egyptian queen, a medieval
court jester, or a schoolmistress in the Old West, is meticulously
drawn and concisely described. 328 color illustrations.
The book covers

to modern times
• a broad array of groups, from servants and laborers
to nobility and royalty

The
Anatomy of Design: Uncovering the Influences and Inspirations
in Modern Graphic Design - Publisher's
Marketing: "An iconic collection of design work
presented in fresh and useful format.
Designers are conceptual pack rats. They pack as much raw
material in their brains as possible and then use that to
build their own unique designs. "The Anatomy of Design"
is what, in the butcher business, they call a "side
of beef." The authors selected fifty examples of graphic
design that will be dissected, piece by piece, tissue by
tissue, revealing an array of influences and inspirations.
These are not necessarily the most well-known or celebrated
objects of graphic design, though many contain the genetic
codes of some canonical works. Instead, these represent
contemporary artifacts that are well conceived, finely crafted,
and filled with hidden treasures. Some are overtly complex
and their influences are somewhat easy to see with the naked
eye. Others are so simple that it is hard to believe there
is a storehouse of inspiration hidden underneath.
The selections include all kinds of design work including
posters, book and record covers, packages, catalog covers,
and more. Each exhibit is selected based on its ubiquity,
thematic import, and aesthetic significance, and every page
is a means to show how great work is derived from various
inspirational and physical sources, some well-known, some
unknown. Each design is presented on a gate-fold showing
the featured design and and other works that share the key
influences with extended captions explaining the whys and
wherefores."

the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality
- Publisher's Marketing:
""A thoughtful, in places chilling, account of
the way entertainment values have hollowed out American
life." --"The New York Times Book Review"
From one of America's most original cultural critics and
the author of Winchell, the story of how our bottomless
appetite for novelty, gossip, glamour, and melodrama has
turned everything of importance-from news and politics to
religion and high culture-into one vast public entertainment.
Neal Gabler calls them "lifies," those blockbusters
written in the medium of life that dominate the media and
the national conversation for weeks, months, even years:
the death of Princess Diana, the trial of O.J. Simpson,
Kenneth Starr vs. William Jefferson Clinton. Real Life as
Entertainment is hardly a new phenomenon, but the movies,
and now the new information technologies, have so accelerated
it that it is now the reigning popular art form. How this
came to pass, and just what it means for our culture and
our personal lives, is the subject of this witty, concerned,
and sometimes eye-opening book."

lifestyle, not only in how they live but also where they
live, The Simple Home features 21 houses and presents six
different approaches to creating a home that realizes its
full potential both simply and elegantly.
We are living in complex times, in a commodified, virtual,
and overstimulated culture. One response to high levels
of complexity and overstimulation is to look for yet another
gadget or closet organizer to simplify our lives. But the
answer lies somewhere else. The road to a simpler more satisfying
life begins with a clear-eyed examination of the choices
we are making for our time--and that includes choices about
where we want to live.
The Simple Home presents six paths to simplicity, each illustrated
by human-scaled, unadorned homes with straightforward floor
plans and forms. These are open, light-filled homes (with
rooms or spaces that are often multipurpose) that express
their beauty in their utility and practicality. Simple homes
are low maintenance and often green, designed for homeowners
who wish to embody a different set of values in their housing
choices than the run-of-the-mill starter castles littering

Past
Perfect - Publisher's
Marketing: "In "Past Perfect," Susan
Isaacs gives us one of her most glorious characters ever:
bright, buoyant, and borderline luscious Katie Schottland.
Katie seems to have the ideal life: a great husband, a precocious
and winning ten-year-old son, and a dream job -- writer for
the long-running TV series "Spy Guys." But all is
not as splendid as it should be because writing about the
espionage business isn't nearly as satisfying as working in
it.
Fifteen years earlier, Katie was in the CIA. She loved
her job (to say nothing of her boss, the mysterious Benton
Mattingly). Yet just as she was sensing she was in line
for a promotion, she was fired -- escorted off the premises
by two extremely hulking security types. Why? No one would
tell her: when you're expelled from the Agency, warm friends
immediately become icy ex-colleagues who won't risk their
security clearances by talking to you.
Until that day, Katie was where she wanted to be. Coming
from a family of Manhattan superachievers, she too had a
job she not only adored but a job that made her, in the
family tradition, a Someone. Fifteen years later, Katie
is still stuck on her firing. Was she set up? Or did she
make some terrible mistake that cost lives? She believes
that if she could discover why they threw her out, she might
be at peace.
On the day she's rushing to get her son off to summer camp,
Katie gets a surprise call from former Agency colleague
Lisa Golding. "A matter of national importance,"
says Lisa, who promises to reveal the truth about the firing
-- "if" Katie will help her. Lisa was never very
good at truth-telling, though she swears she's changed her
ways. Katie agrees to speak with her, but before she can,
Lisavanishes.
Maturity and common sense should keep Katie in the bright,
normal world of her present life, away from the dark intrigues
of the past. But she needs to know. As she takes just a
few steps to find out, one ex-spy who might have the answers
dies under suspicious circumstances. Another former agent
is murdered. Could it be there's a list? If so, is Katie
now on it? And who will be the next to go?"

Jewish cemetery of Zokof, Friedl Alterman is wakened from
death. On the ground above her crouches Itzik Leiber, a reclusive,
unbelieving fourteen-year-old whose fatal mistake has spurred
the town's angry residents to violence. The childless Friedl
rises to guide him to safety-only to find she cannot go back
to her tomb. Now Friedl is trapped in that thin world between
life and death, her brash decision binding her forever to
Itzik and his family: she is fated to be forever restless,
and he, forever haunted by the ghosts of his past.
Years later, after Itzik himself has gone to his grave,
his son, Nathan, knows nothing of his bitter father's childhood.
When he begrudgingly goes to Poland on business, Nathan
decides on a whim to visit his ancestral town. There, in
Zokof, he meets the mysterious Rafael, the town's last remaining
Jew, who promises to pass on all the things Itzik had failed
to teach his son-about Zokof, about his faith, and about
himself.
And yet, like the generation before him, Nathan keeps what
he learns hidden inside himself. With the family legacy
in danger of being lost, Friedl's restless spirit guides
Itzik's precocious granddaughter, Ellen, on a journey of
her own to Zokof, where only Friedl can help Ellen unlock
the mysteries of her family's past-and only Ellen can help
Friedl break her agonizing enslavement.
A stunning debut novel of enormous scope and beauty, A
Day of Small Beginnings tells the timeless story of the
Leiber family; of the secrets that break them, the love
that binds them, and the town that is both their curse and
their redemption."

Marketing: "Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles,
whose previous film, CITY OF GOD, won awards all over the

at the 2004 Oscars--has crafted another highly entertaining
yet important film. Beautifully shot in Kenya, Germany,
Sudan, Manitoba, and London, THE CONSTANT GARDENER, based
on a bestselling novel by John Le Carré, is an exciting
mix of romance and spy thriller. Ralph Fiennes stars as
Justin Quayle, a low-level British diplomat who has always
gone about his work very quietly, not causing any problems.
But after his radical wife, Tessa (Rachel Weisz), is killed,
he becomes determined to find out why, thrusting himself
into the middle of a very dangerous conspiracy. Jeffrey
Caine's powerful screenplay alternates between flashbacks
of Justin and Tessa's relationship and Justin's hunt for
the truth, which makes him a target--although he doesn't
know who is after him. Fine support is offered by Danny
Huston as his close friend and confidant, Sandy; Bill Nighy
as shady British official Sir Bernard Pellegrin; and Hubert
Koundé as Arnold Bluhm, an African doctor who might
have been a little too friendly with Tessa. Meirelles's
pacing is outstanding, switching effortlessly between political
intrigue, action adventure, and love story. And Fiennes
and Weisz give strong performances playing complex characters
that will continually surprise the audience. THE CONSTANT
GARDENER is a thrilling tale from start to finish."

| Death
Penalty on Trial: Crisis in American Justice -
Publisher's Marketing: "In
1972, the Supreme Court declared capital punishment "cruel
and unusual punishment." This should have effectively
eliminated the death penalty. But individual states enacted
their own laws and have continued to execute people with
undiminished zeal. Back in the 70s, Bill Kurtis, creator
of the television phenomenon of true crime investigation--and
now host of the popular television series "American
Justice"--supported the death penalty. Kurtis covered
the trials of some of the most heinous murderers in America,
including cult killer Charles Manson, and he had no qualms
seeing his subjects executed. But the ordeal of Ray Krone,
a Phoenix postal worker twice convicted of murder and put
on death row, only to be freed five years later on irrefutable
DNA evidence linking the murder to another man, changed
his mind. In this startling book, Kurtis takes the reader
on his most remarkable investigative journey yet. Here,
we follow trails of wrong decisions. We examine in detail
why responsible lawyers, judges and law enforcement personnel
all came up with wrong verdicts and sent innocent men to
death row. We re-visit the murder scenes, study the evidence,
and explore the tactical decisions made before and during
trial, which led to wrong conclusions. We see why the new
jewel of forensic science, DNA, is revealing more than innocence
and guilt, opening a window into the criminal justice system
that could touch off a revolution of reform. Ultimately
we come to a remarkable conclusion: The possibility for
error in our justice system is simply too great to allow
the death penalty to stand as our ultimate punishment. Kurtis
pinpoints eight main reasons why the wrong people are condemned
to death.These include overzealous and dishonest prosecutors;
corrupt policemen who beat and coerce confessions out of
defendants; poorly paid lawyers who don't offer a competent
defense; corrupt expert witnesses; unreliable eye witnesses;
bias and incompetent judges; and the testimony of jailhouse
informants. Having exposed these glaring flaws in the American
justice system, Kurtis makes a dramatic claim; Capital punishment
is a crime. It epitomizes all that's wrong with the American
judicial system. It must stop. There can be no real justice
in America until the death penalty is abolished."

Executing
Justice: The Moral Meaning of the Death Penalty
- Publisher's Marketing:
""Justice for Deborah Thornton is complete, "
Richard Thornton said after the execution of her killer, Karla
Faye Tucker, in Texas. "I want to say to every victim
in the world, demand this." But which form of justice
is this victim demanding-retribution or restoration?
Taking seriously the claims of death penalty supporters,
Lloyd Steffen constructs a theory of just execution. For
every acknowledged killer on death row there are dozens
who maintain their innocence. Supporters of the death penalty
-- along with its opponents -- must demand fairness so that
innocent persons are not subjected to the terror of an unjust
execution.
Reminding us that Jesus likewise faced the terror of unjust
execution, Steffen asks Christians to reacquaint themselves
with the symbol of the cross as an instrument of state terror
rather than a divine decoration."

| Consumed:
How Markets Corrupt Children, Infantilize Adults, and Swallow
Citizens Whole - Publisher's
Marketing: "A piercing and vital look at how
capitalism is consuming U.S. society.
An apt sequel to Benjamin R. Barber's best-selling "Jihad
vs. McWorld, Consumed" offers a wrenching portrait
of how adult consumers are infantilized in a global economy
that overproduces goods and targets children as consumers
in a market where there are never enough shoppers. Driven
by a frantic imperative to sell, consumer capitalism specializes
today in the manufacture not of goods but of needs.
This provocative culmination of Barber's lifelong study
of democracy and capitalism shows how the infantilist ethos
deprives society of responsible citizens and displaces public
goods with private commodities. Traditional liberal democratic
society is colonized by an all-pervasive market imperative.
Public space is privatized. Identity is branded. Our world,
homogenized. With brilliance and depth, Barber confronts
the likely consequences for our children, our liberty, and
our citizenship, and shows finally how citizens can resist
and transcend the civic schizophrenia with which consumerism
has infected them."

American Ascendancy: How the United States Gained and Wielded
Global Dominance - Publisher's
Marketing: "What road did Americans travel to
reach their current global preeminence? Taking the long
historical view, Hunt demonstrates that wealth, confidence,
and leadership were key elements to Americas ascent. In
an analytic narrative that illuminates the past rather than
indulges in political triumphalism, he provides crucial
insights into the countrys problematic place in the world
today. Hunt charts Americas rise to global power from the
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to a culminating
multilayered dominance achieved in the mid-twentieth century.
He examines how the United States remade great power relations,
fashioned limits for the third world, and shaped our current
international economic and cultural order. Hunt concludes
by addressing current issues, such as how durable American
power really is and what options remain for Americas future."

Islamic jurist, roots his arguments in long-standing historical
legal debates, delineating point by point the beliefs and
practices of moderate Muslims and distinguishing these texts
from the corrupting influences of the extremists. From the
role of women in Islam to the nature of jihad, and from
democracy and human rights to terrorism and warfare, Abou
El Fadl builds a vital vision for a moderate Islam. At long

Press
One for English: Language Policy, Public Opinion, and American
Identity - Publisher's
Marketing: ""Press "ONE" for English"
examines how Americans form opinions on language policy issues
such as declaring English the official language, printing
documents in multiple languages, and bilingual education.
Deborah Schildkraut shows that people's conceptions of American
national identity play an integral role in shaping their views.
Using insights from American political thought and intellectual
history, she highlights several components of that identity
and shows how they are brought to bear on debates about language.
Her analysis expands the range of factors typically thought
to explain attitudes in such policy areas, emphasizing in
particular the role that civic republicanism's call for active
and responsible citizenship plays in shaping opinion on language
issues.
Using focus groups and survey data, Schildkraut develops
a model of public conceptions of what it means to be American
and demonstrates the complex ways in which people draw on
these conceptions when forming and explaining their views.
In so doing she illustrates how focus group methodology
can help yield vital new insights into opinion formation.
With the rise in the use of ballot initiatives to implement
language policies, understanding opinion formation in this
policy area has become imperative. This book enhances our
understanding of this increasingly pressing concern, and
points the way toward humane, effective, and broadly popular
language policies that address the realities of American
demographics in the twenty-first century while staying true
to the nation's most revered values."

the fifteen-minute-famous girlfriend of a tabloid murderer—
into the wilderness of Florida’ s Ten Thousand Islands

former employer, Piejack (whose mismatched fingers are proof

And he doesn’ t know he’ s being followed by

| Dead
Wrong: Violence, Vengeance, and the Victims of Capital Punishment
- Publisher's Marketing:
"Polls indicate that 75 percent of Americans favor
the death penalty--but they also show that minds change
when individuals are confronted with the facts. This book
was written to offer those facts-and to change those minds.
The United States is alone among Western democracies in
its support for capital punishment, which was only briefly
abolished throughout this country between 1972 and 1976.
Today, 38 states have some form of capital punishment. Yet
studies show that the death penalty is not a deterrent to
crime, that racial disparities in the implementation of
capital punishment are rampant, and that all kinds of procedural
errors, incompetent defense lawyers, and mistaken eyewitness
identifications lead to an alarming number of wrongful convictions.
Attitudes toward the death penalty have changed dramatically
throughout the course of history, evolving from times when
public executions were occasions of solemn and pious ritual
to those when it was an excuse for raucous entertainment,
and finally to the modern era of private, bureaucratized,
mechanized, and sanitized executions conducted out of sight
and out of mind. Conforming thus to modern sensibilities,
state-sanctioned killing is somehow more acceptable to us
than public hangings, because we can imagine that the inmate's
death is relatively painless, and not in violation of the
Eighth Amendment's prohibition against "cruel and unusual"
punishment. This may or may not be true; Stack presents
compelling arguments to the contrary. What is certain is
that Dead Wrong demonstrates beyond a doubt that death row
is itself a form of psychological torture and of slow, painful
dehumanization."

Educating
Peter: How I Taught a Famous Movie Critic the Difference Between
Cabernet and Merlot or How Anybody Can Become an (Almost)
Instant Wine Expert - Publisher's
Marketing: "Lettie Teague knows wine. She has
been the wine editor at Food & Wine magazine for almost
a decade. The only question she is asked more than "Can
you recommend a great wine for under $10?" -- great cheap
white: Argiolas Costamolino Vermentino from Sardinia; great
cheap red: Alamos Malbec from Argentina -- is "What is
the best way to learn about wine?" After many years
of fielding these questions, Lettie was determined to debunk
the myth that learning about wine is hard. She decided to
find just one wine idiot and teach him a few fundamentals
-- how to order off a restaurant wine list without fear,
approach a wine merchant with confidence, and perhaps even
score a few points off a wine snob.
Enter her neighbor, good friend and complete wine neophyte
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone magazine's longtime film critic.
Peter Travers proved the perfect Eliza Doolittle to Lettie's
Professor Higgins. As a film critic he made bold pronouncements
("This movie stinks," which could be readily translated
to "This Cabernet tastes like Merlot") and exhibited
a finely tuned visual sense ("The cinematography could
be improved" could easily become "This wine is
too white"). But, most important, Peter knew almost
nothing about wine.
As Lettie begins their lessons, Peter puts down his ever-present
glass of "fatty" Chardonnay and learns that there
is a huge world out there full of all kinds of wine. He
is taught to swirl his glass to release the wine's aromatic
compounds -- or esters -- above the rim and vows, "I'm
going to do that for Martin Scorsese next time I see him.
I'll volatize my esters for him."
Thus Lettie enlightens her wine-challenged but film-savvyfriend
about the Facts of Wine: how to hold a glass; the vocabulary
of wine; how wine is made; how to read labels; how to tell
the difference between grape varieties; how to make sense
of vintages; how to glean information about a wine simply
by looking at the shape and color of the bottle; and an
overview of the great wine regions of the Old World and
the New.
Finally, after many fact-filled, hilarious lessons, Lettie
takes Peter to the most famous American wine region of all,
Napa Valley, where he hobnobs with wine and Hollywood royalty
and finally puts his new skills to the test in the real
world.
Part buddy movie, part serious wine tutorial, Educating
Peter is as much a treat for oenophiles in on the joke as
it is for beginners who think Chablis is a brand name of
wine."

False
Alarm: The Truth about the Epidemic of Fear
- Publisher's Marketing:
"Life today for citizens of the developed world is far
safer, easier, and healthier than for any other people in
history. Modern medicine has all but wiped out many diseases
that once were common killers. Science and technology have
given us countless devices that protect our bodies from injury,
secure our property, and warn us of impending disaster. And
modern intelligence gathering can pinpoint threats to our
domestic security as they arise. So why is an epidemic of
fear sweeping America?
The answer, according to nationally renowned health commentator
Dr. Marc Siegel, is that we live in an artificially created
culture of fear. From the anthrax panic to the SARS "epidemic,"
from "official" rumors of bioterror to Orange
alerts to West Nile virus— the media continually bombard
us with breaking news of yet another super-bug, terrorist
plot, or natural disaster that's about to wreak havoc. Most
of the time the disasters never materialize. But even if
they did, the odds that any of us would suffer harm from
them is infinitesimally small— especially when compared
to the much greater risks of dying in a car accident or
from coronary heart disease.
In False Alarm, Siegel identifies three major catalysts
of the culture of fear— government, the media, and
big pharma. And, with the help of fascinating, blow-by-blow
analyses of some of the most sensational false alarms of
the past few years, he shows how those big three fearmongers
manipulate our most primitive instincts— often without
our even realizing it— to promote their political
agendas, boost their ratings, and sell their products.
In his role as a dedicated healer, Siegel offers his prescription
for inoculatingourselves against fear tactics. He shows
us how to look behind the hype and hysteria and helps us
to develop the emotional and intellectual skills needed
to take back our lives from fearmongers."

her own life. On top of it all, Ganahl has to manage being
thrust into the public eye when her very successful new

and self-aware, "Naked on the Page" is a tale

| The
War on Privacy - Publisher's
Marketing: "In today's globalized society, the
war on terror has negatively affected privacy rights not
just in the United States, but everywhere. When privacy
rights are curtailed around the world, American efforts
to spread freedom and democracy are hindered, and as a consequence,
Americans are less secure in the world. Ironically, the
erosion of individual privacy rights, here and abroad, has
been happening in the name of enhancing national security.
This book sheds light on this apparent contradiction, and
argues that governments must do more to preserve privacy
rights while endeavoring to protect their citizens against
future terrorist attacks. It is easy to forget that prior
to 9/11, privacy rights were on the march. Plans were in
the works, in the areas of legislation and regulation, to
protect personal privacy from both governmental intrusion
and corporate penetration. The need for such protections
arose from the swift advances in information technology
of the 1990s. But the attacks of 9/11, and the responses
of governments to this new level of the terrorist threat,
put an end to all that. Not only is privacy no longer emphasized
in legislation, it is being eroded steadily, raising significant

| Jeb:
America's Next Bush - Publisher's
Marketing: "Jeb Bush, Florida's governor and
a dutiful prince, was groomed his entire life for the presidency
only to learn that life isn't fair when his far less industrious
black sheep brother beat him to the job. S. V. D?te, who,
as Tallahassee bureau chief of "The Palm Beach Post,"
has covered Jeb for eight years, rejects the trend in political
journalism that focuses only on "American Idol"-like
artifice-who's up and who's down and what are the latest
poll numbers?-and muckrakes his way to the core of Jeb in
this revealing account of his Florida years. This was no
easy task, for in Jeb's kingdom dissent is frowned upon
and journalists are supposed to be accommodating stenographers,
not steadfast reporters. D?te soon became the biggest journalistic
thorn in Jeb's side, producing award-winning stories that
revealed the real winners and losers of Bush's policies.
Jeb's second and final term as Florida governor ends in
January 2007. He leaves office a popular man in his home
state, and revered by the national Republican Party's conservative
base. True, Bush fatigue may result in Jeb settling for
the vice-presidency in 2008-he's already discussed this
possibility with John McCain-and maybe NFL commissioner
in 2007, but his day will come, and D?te shows us why: Jeb,
unlike his brother George, is a policy wonk, knows how to
take charge when a natural disaster strikes, is a workaholic,
eloquently speaks without notes, and, at six-four, has a
larger-than-life charismatic presence that makes even opponents
say: "I want him to like me.""

Not
Buying It: My Year Without Shopping -
Publisher's Marketing: " Many
of us have tried to call a halt to our spending at one time
or another. But what if we decided not to buy anything for
a whole year? Obviously, we would need necessities like food
and soap, but how would be manage without new clothes, treats,
entertainment?
Funny, smart and self-deprecating, "Not Buying It"
is a close look at our society's obsession with shopping
and the cold turkey confession of a woman we can all identify
with -- someone who can't live without French roast coffee
andexpensive wool socks, but who has had enough of spending
money for the sake of it. Without consumer goods and experiences,
Levine and her partner Paul pursue their careers, nurture
family relationships and try to keep their sanity and humour
intact. Tracking their progress and lapses, she contemplates
the meanings of need and desire, scarcity and security,
consumerism and citizenship. She asks the big questions
-- can the economy survive without shopping? Are Q-tips
a necessity?
A thought-provoking account of the pleasures and perils
of the purchase-driven life, "Not Buying It" will
get readers talking about their reliance on the act of buying
and the possibility of getting off the merry-go-round."

Fruit: Sex & Religion in the Lives of American Teenagers
- Publisher's Marketing:
"Americans remain deeply ambivalent about teenage sexuality.
Many presume that such uneasiness is rooted in religion.
But how exactly does religion contribute to the formation
of teenagers' sexual values and actions? What difference,
if any, does religion make in adolescents' sexual attitudes
and behaviors? Are abstinence pledges effective? What does
it mean to be "emotionally ready" for sex? Who
expresses regrets about their sexual activity and why?
Tackling these and other questions, Forbidden Fruit tells
the definitive story of the sexual values and practices
of American teenagers, paying particular attention to how
participating in organized religion shapes sexual decision-making.
Merging analyses of three national surveys with stories
drawn from interviews with over 250 teenagers across America,
Mark Regnerus reviews how young people learn-and what they
know-about sex from their parents, schools, peers and other
sources. He examines what experiences teens profess to have
had, and how they make sense of these experiences in light
of their own identities as religious, moral, and responsible
persons.
Religion can and does matter, Regnerus finds, but religious
claims are often swamped by other compelling sexual scripts.
Particularly interesting is the emergence of what Regnerus
calls a new middle class sexual morality which has little
to do with a desire for virginity but nevertheless shuns
intercourse in order to avoid risks associated with pregnancy
and STDs. And strikingly, evangelical teens aren't less
sexually active than their non-evangelical counterparts,
they just tend to feel guiltier about it. In fact, Regnerus
finds that few religious teens haveinternalized or are even
able to articulate the sexual ethic taught by their denominations.
The only-and largely ineffective-sexual message most religious
teens are getting is, "Don't do it until you're married."
Ultimately, Regnerus concludes, religion may influence adolescent
sexual behavior, but it rarely motivates sexual decision
making."

Guns, Public Health - Publisher's
Marketing: "On an average day in the U.S., guns
are used to kill almost eighty people, and wound nearly
three hundred more. If any other consumer product had this
sort of disastrous effect, the public outcry would be deafening;
yet when it comes to guns such facts are accepted as a natural
consequence of supposedly high American rates of violence.
Private Guns, Public Health explodes that myth and many
more, revealing the advantages of treating gun violence
as a consumer safety and public health problem. Author David
Hemenway fair-mindedly and authoritatively demonstrates
how a public-health approach -- which emphasizes prevention
over punishment, and which has been so successful in reducing
the rates of injury and death from infectious disease, car
accidents, and tobacco consumption -- can be applied to
gun violence.
Hemenway uncovers the complex connections between guns and
self-defense, school violence, homicide, and more. Finally,
he outlines a course of regulation and policy that would
significantly reduce gun-related injuries and deaths.
With its bold new public-health approach to guns, Private
Guns, Public Health marks a shift in our understanding of
guns that will finally point us toward a solution.
David Hemenway is Director of the Harvard Injury Control
Research Center and Professor of Health Policy at Harvard
School of Public Health. A former Pew Fellow on Injury Control,
he has been a Senior Soros Justice Fellow and received a

State
of Denial: Bush at War, Part III - Publisher's
Marketing: ""Insurgents and terrorists retain
the resources and capabilities to sustain and even increase
current level of violence through the next year." This
was the secret Pentagon assessment sent to the White House
in May 2006. The forecast of a more violent 2007 in Iraq contradicted
the repeated optimistic statements of President Bush, including
one, two days earlier, when he said we were at a "turning
point" that history would mark as the time "the
forces of terror began their long retreat." "State
of Denial" examines how the Bush administration avoided
telling the truth about Iraq to the public, to Congress,
and often to themselves. Two days after the May report,
the Pentagon told Congress, in a report required by law,
that the "appeal and motivation for continued violent
action will begin to wane in early 2007."
In this detailed inside story of a war-torn White House,
Bob Woodward reveals how White House Chief of Staff Andrew
Card, with the indirect support of other high officials,
tried for 18 months to get Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld
replaced. The president and Vice President Cheney refused.
At the beginning of Bush's second term, Stephen Hadley,
who replaced Condoleezza Rice as national security adviser,
gave the administration a "D minus" on implementing
its policies. A SECRET report to the new Secretary of State
Rice from her counselor stated that, nearly two years after
the invasion, Iraq was a "failed state."
"State of Denial" reveals that at the urging
of Vice President Cheney and Rumsfeld, the most frequent
outside visitor and Iraq adviser to President Bush is former
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who, haunted still by
the loss in Vietnam, emerges as a hiddenand potent voice.
Woodward reveals that the secretary of defense himself
believes that the system of coordination among departments
and agencies is broken, and in a SECRET May 1, 2006, memo,
Rumsfeld stated, "the current system of government
makes competence next to impossible."
"State of Denial" answers the core questions:
What happened after the invasion of Iraq? Why? How does
Bush make decisions and manage a war that he chose to define
his presidency? And is there an achievable plan for victory?
Bob Woodward's third book on President Bush is a sweeping
narrative -- from the first days George W. Bush thought
seriously about running for president through the recruitment
of his national security team, the war in Afghanistan, the
invasion and occupation of Iraq, and the struggle for political
survival in the second term.
After more than three decades of reporting on national
security decision making -- including his two #1 national
bestsellers on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, "Bush
at War" (2002) and "Plan of Attack" (2004)
-- Woodward provides the fullest account, and explanation,
of the road Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice and the White House
staff have walked."

| Murder
in Hollywood: Solving a Silent Screen Mystery -
Publisher's Marketing: "For
more than eighty years, the famous unsolved murder of William
Desmond Taylor, the legendary bisexual film director, has
generated debate and controversy. Now, best-selling author
Charles Higham has solved the crime. Higham uncovers the
corruption and intrigue of Los Angeles in the Roaring Twenties--and
the film industry moguls' complete domination of the city's
authorities.
When it was discovered that a famous star of the day had
probably killed Taylor, a massive cover-up began--from the
removal of crucial evidence to the naming of innocent people
as killers--which has continued until now to protect the
truth. Murder in Hollywood goes beyond the killing to unearth
unknown details about the life of Taylor before his arrival
in Hollywood, as well as the stories and histories buried
by the crooked authorities and criminals involved the case.
The author's exclusive interviews with the culpable star,
his unique possession of long-vanished police records, and
the support of the present-day Los Angeles county coroner--who
examined the evidence as if the murder had taken place now--have
ensured a hair-raising thriller.
Charles Higham successfully presents the most plausible
and convincing solution yet to the mystery. In the process
he paints a vivid portrait of Hollywood in the 1920s--from
its major stars to its bisexual subculture. The result is
a compelling answer to a long-standing mystery and a fascinating
study of a place, and an industry that, as today, let people
reinvent themselves. Murder in Hollywood is more extraordinary
than any crime of fiction and more exciting than any action
adventure movie."

| Complicity
with Evil: The United Nations in the Age of Modern Genocide
- Publisher's Marketing:
"From the killing fields of Rwanda and Srebrenica a
decade ago to those of Darfur today, the United Nations
has repeatedly failed to confront genocide. This is evinced,
author and journalist Adam LeBor maintains, in a May 1995
document from Yasushi Akashi, the most senior UN official
in the field during the Yugoslav wars, in which he refused
to authorize air strikes against the Serbs for fear they
would “ weaken” Milosevic. More recently, in
2003, urgent reports from UN officials in the Sudan detailing
atrocities from Darfur were ignored for a year because they
were politically inconvenient.
This book is the first to examine in detail the crucial
role of the Secretariat, its relationship with the Security
Council, and the failure of UN officials themselves to confront
genocide. LeBor argues the UN must return to its founding
principles, take a moral stand and set the agenda of the
Security Council instead of merely following the lead of
the great powers. LeBor draws on dozens of firsthand interviews
with UN officials, current and former, and such international
diplomats as Madeleine Albright, Richard Holbrooke, Douglas
Hurd, and David Owen. This book will set the terms for discussion
when UN Secretary General Kofi Annan steps down to make
room for a new head of the world body, and political observers
assess Annan’ s legacy and look to the future of the
world organization."

Welty Complete Novels - Publisher's
Marketing: "In a career spanning five decades,
Eudora Welty has chronicled her own Mississippi with a depth
and intensity matched only by William Faulkner. One of the
most influential writers of the century, her novels and
stories blend the storytelling tradition of the South with
a modernist sensibility attuned to the mysteries and ambiguities
of experience. Welty explores the complex abundance of southern,
and particularly southern women's, lives with an artistry
that Salman Rushdie has called "impossible to overpraise."
Complete Novels gathers all of Welty's longer fiction in
one volume for the first time. In The Robber Bridegroom
(1942), based on a Grimm fairy tale, legendary figures from
Mississippi's past, such as the keel-boat captain Mike Fink
and the savage outlaws the Harp Brothers, mingle with Welty's
own imaginings in a free-ranging and boisterous fantasy
set along the Natchez Trace. The richly textured Delta Wedding
(1946), set against a backdrop of rural Mississippi in the
1920s, vividly portrays the intricacies of family relationships
in its account of the sprawling Fairchild clan. Edna Earle
Ponder's unrestrained and delightfully absurd monologue,
superb in its capturing of the rhythms of country speech,
shows Welty's humor at its idiomatic best in The Ponder
Heart (1954), a flight of invention culminating in a murder
trial that becomes an occasion for exuberant comedy. The
monumental Losing Battles (1970), composed over fifteen
years, brings Welty's imaginative gifts to the largest canvas
of her career, rendering a Depression-era family reunion
with mythic scope and ebullient comic vigor. The volume
concludes with The Optimist's Daughter (1972), a taut and
moving story of a woman rediscovering the world of her childhood
as she comes to terms with her father's death. Often considered
her masterpiece, it won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature
in 1972."

Jane Hit: Why Girls Are Growing More Violent and What We
Can Do about It - Publisher's
Marketing: "From one of America's leading authorities
on juvenile violence and aggression, a groundbreaking investigation
of the explosion in violent behavior by girls: its causes,
consequences, and possible solutions
"Teen Hazing Turns Vicious," "Gang Beats
Man Senseless," "Teenagers Indicted for Murder,"
"School Shooter Sought Revenge for Put-downs,"
"Youth Arrested in Murder Plot Aimed at Parents."
The headlines don't seem remarkable: juvenile violence has
always been with us. What is new is that these stories aren't
about boys, they're about girls. Just ten years ago, almost
ten boys were arrested for assault for every girl. Now the
ratio is four to one, and it's dropping rapidly. What's
going on with American girls? See Jane Hit is the first
big-picture answer to this crucial question, a groundbreaking
examination of this hidden epidemic by one of America's
most respected authorities on juvenile violent aggression.
In "See Jane Hit," Dr. James Garbarino shows that
the rise in girls' violence is the product of many interrelated
cultural developments, several of which are largely positive.
Girls have learned to express themselves physically in organized
sports-thirty years ago, the number of boys playing organized
sports was more than ten times greater than the number of
girls; now we're almost at 1: 1. In a number of other ways,
too, the cultural foot binding that has kept girls from
embracing their own physical power has been removed, which
is largely to be celebrated. But nothing happens in isolation,
and there's rarely such a momentous societal shift with
absolutely no downside. One problem is that girls aren't
being trained to handle their own physical aggression the
way boys are: our methods of child-rearing culture include
all sorts of mechanisms for socializing boys to express
their violence in socially acceptable ways, but with girls
we lag very far behind. At the same time, the culture has
become more toxic for boys and girls alike, and girls' sexuality
is linked with violence in new and disturbing ways.
Ultimately, this brilliant, far-reaching examination of
physical aggression and the "new" American girl
shows us there is much we can do differently. "See
Jane Hit" is not just a powerful wake-up call; it's

Four Freedoms Under Siege: The Clear and Present Danger
from Our National Security State - Publisher's
Marketing: "FDR's Four Freedoms--Freedom of
Speech, Freedom to Worship, Freedom from Want, and Freedom
from Fear--were presented to the American people in his
1941 State of the Union address, and they became the inspiration
for a second bill of rights, extending the New Deal and
guaranteeing work, housing, medical care, and education.
Although the bill never was adopted in a legal sense in
this country, its principles pervaded the political landscape
for an entire generation, including the War on Poverty and
the Great Society reforms of the 1960s. Furthermore, the
ideas expressed in the Four Freedoms speech inspired the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights. But since the late
1970s and early 1980s, these freedoms have been under assault,
from presidential administrations of both parties, economic
pressures, and finally, the alleged requirements of national
security. After 9/11, this process accelerated even more
rapidly. The authors address the hard questions of individual
freedom versus national security that are on the minds of
Americans of all political stripes. They bring together
the pivotal events, leaders, policies, and fateful decisions--often
path-breaking, more often ending in folly--that have subverted
our constitutional government from its founding. "You
reach the inescapable conclusion," the authors write,
"that the United States is a warrior nation, has been
addicted to war from the start, and is able to sustain its
warfare habit only by mugging American taxpayers, and believing
in its mission as God's chosen.""

| Food
Is Love: Advertising and Gender Roles in Modern America
- Publisher's Marketing:
"Modern advertising has changed dramatically since
the early twentieth century, but when it comes to food,
Katherine Parkin writes, the message has remained consistent.
Advertisers have historically promoted food in distinctly
gendered terms, returning repeatedly to themes that associated
shopping and cooking with women. Foremost among them was
that, regardless of the actual work involved, women should
serve food to demonstrate love for their families. In identifying
shopping and cooking as an expression of love, ads helped
to both establish and reinforce the belief that kitchen
work was women's work, even as women's participation in
the labor force dramatically increased. Alternately flattering
her skills as a homemaker and preying on her insecurities,
advertisers suggested that using their products would give
a woman irresistible sexual allure, a happy marriage, and
healthy children. Ads also promised that by buying and making
the right foods, a woman could help her family achieve social
status, maintain its racial or ethnic identity, and assimilate
into the American mainstream."

The Untold Story of America's Health Care Crisis---And the
People Who Pay the Price - Publisher's
Marketing: "America's health care system is unraveling.
Every day, millions of hard-working people struggle to find
affordable medical treatment for themselves and their families—
unable to pay for prescription drugs and regular checkups,
let alone hospital visits. Some of these people end up losing
money. Others end up losing something even more valuable:
their health or even their lives. In this powerful work of
original reportage, Jonathan Cohn travels across the United
States— the only country in the developed world that
does not guarantee access to medical care as a right of citizenship—
to investigate why this crisis is happening and to see firsthand
its impact on ordinary Americans.
The stories he brings back are tragic and infuriating.
In Boston, a heart attack victim becomes a casualty of emergency
room overcrowding when she is turned away from the one hospital
that could treat her. In South Central L.A., a security
guard loses part of his vision when he can't find affordable
treatment for his diabetes. In the middle of the prairie
heartland, a retired meatpacker sells his house to pay for
the medications that keep him and his aging wife alive.
And, in a tiny village tucked into the Catskill mountains,
a mother of three young children decides against a costly
doctor's visit— and lets a deadly cancer go undetected—
because her husband's high-tech job no longer provides health
insurance.
Passionate, illuminating, and often devastating, "Sick"
interweaves these stories with clear-eyed reporting from
Washington and takes us inside the medical industry to chronicle
the decline of America's health care system— and lays
bare the consequences any oneof us could suffer if we don't
replace it."

Changing Vampire of Film and Television: A Critical Study
of the Growth of a Genre - Publisher's
Marketing: "Vampires have been a fixture of
film since Bela Lugosi brought Bram Stokers Dracula to life
on the big screen in 1931. Over the decades the genre has
been far from static, as vampire narratives changed and
evolved with the appetites of their viewing public. First
depicted as formally dressed villains, vampires would later
be portrayed as supernatural beings with some human characteristics,
and still later as sympathetic figures. Focusing on 19 representative
films and television productions, this critical study tracks
the evolutionary changes of the screen vampire. It explores
the factors that cause a genre to change and examines the
alternating cycles of audience expectation. The author identifies
three distinct modes of depiction: the Malignant Cycle (1931-1948),
comprised primarily of the Universal films; the Erotic Cycle
(1957-1985), which encompasses Hammer films and popular
television shows; and the Sympathetic Cycle (1987-present)
including recent offerings. Each film is evaluated in seven
key areas including the act of the vampire biting the victim;
process of the victims infection; physical appearance and
demeanor of the vampire and the vampire expert; and the
eventual destruction of the vampire. Appendices include
a complete filmography of the films examined."

| Bleeding
to Ease the Pain: Cutting, Self-Injury, and the Adolescent
Search for Self - Publisher's
Marketing: "Parents, teachers, friends, and
even many clinicians are both horrified and mystified upon
discovering teenagers who intentionally cut, burn, and otherwise
inflict pain on themselves. Often causing permanent and
extensive scarring, as well as infections, cutting is increasingly
prevalent among today's youth. As many as 1 in 100 adolescents
report cutting themselves, representing a growing epidemic
of scarred and tormented youth, as we see in this revealing
work. Author Plante explains the threat of suicide must
always be carefully evaluated, although the vast majority
of cutters are not in fact suicidal. Instead, cutting represents
a growing teenage method for easing emotional pain and suffering.
Bleeding from self-inflicted wounds not only helps to numb
and vent despair, it can also be a dramatic means of communicating,
controlling, and asking for help from others. In this book,
Plante features the stories of self-injurers and helps the
reader understand the meaning of the injuries, and how to
help teens stop. This author, who is a psychologist, a parent,
and a Stanford University Medical School faculty member,
explains in clear detail how cutters and the adults who
love them can heal the pain and stop self-injury. Plante
describes the frightening developmental tasks teenagers
and young adults face, and how the central challenges of
the three I's (Independence, Intimacy, and Identity) compel
them to cope through self-destructive acts. Readers will
feel as if they are in the therapy room with Plante and
these struggling teenagers as they seek to overcome their
internal pain and that desperate need to cut and self-injure."

Can
I Freeze It?: How to Use the Most Versatile Appliance in Your
Kitchen - Publisher's
Marketing: "What kitchen appliance is a busy home
cook's greatest friend?
Believe it or not, it's the freezer. Freezers seriously
simplify meal preparation— you can plan ahead, save
time, and shop economically, yet still serve fresh, flavorful
suppers. Freezers are great for those dark winter months
when you want to have dinner on the table fifteen minutes
after you get home from work— think lasagna, stews,
curries, and soups— and they are also useful for entertaining
friends when time is short.
In "Can I Freeze It?" veteran food writer and
stylist Susie Theodorou explains the tips, tricks, and rules
of freezing food, from containers and wrappers (foil or
Tupperware?) to the best methods for retaining moisture
and flavor to what ingredients and dishes can and can't
be frozen. She provides a wealth of recipes, along with
color photographs, for whole and partial dishes. Some are
completely preassembled (for example, chicken in a marinade),
frozen, and cooked later. Others combine frozen ingredients
with fresh ones— pair a pastry from the freezer with
berries from a farm stand, or defrost a sauce and use it
to top fish straight from the market.
The recipes include everything from meat and fish to pizza
and veggies, plus desserts. Many dishes can be served two
ways. For example, prepare classic Bolognese Sauce and serve
some of it for dinner over pasta. Freeze the rest and use
it later to make Meat and Potato Pie. In addition, there
is a chapter on cooking for a crowd in which Susie shares
her best recipes for entertaining large groups of family
and friends. Serve Lamb Ragù Ravioli with Rosemary
Brown Butter, Mexican Chickpea Stew with Green Salsa, or
heartyLasagna— your guests will never know you prepared
most of the meal in advance, making dinner parties a breeze!
And be sure to save room for decadent desserts, including
homey favorites such as Sticky Toffee Pudding and Chocolate
Chunk Cookies as well as showstoppers like Chocolate Truffle
Terrine and Layered Coconut Cake.
In addition to the recipes, there are stunning color photographs
of the finished dishes throughout. With "Can I Freeze
It?" flavorful, healthful, hot meals are ready in minutes,
without turning to takeout. It's the ultimate guide to saving
time and money in the kitchen."

among a bistro, a brasserie, and a wine bar? You would, however,
find little disagreement about the virtues the three have
in common. Together they nourish the Paris of Parisians --
the real and everyday Paris -- with local food, sophistication,
hospitality, and romance. If a routine Tuesday night dinner

have of making the ordinary extraordinary and the extraordinary
ordinary.

| Alice
Waters and Chez Panisse: The Romantic, Impractical, Often
Eccentric, Ultimately Brilliant Making of a Food Revolution
- Publisher's Marketing:
"In an authorized biography-the story of Alice Waters,
Chez Panisse, and the San Francisco 1970s counterculture
food revolution that invented "American cuisine"
Not so long ago it was nearly impossible to find a cappuccino
or a croissant in this country, and goat cheese and mesclun
lettuce were virtually unheard of. Most people had no idea
what "organic" food was, and even fewer thought
about "sustainable farming." But in 1971, in a
corner of Berkeley, California, a young Francophile named
Alice Waters opened a small counterculture restaurant for
her friends called Chez Panisse and launched an entirely
new way of thinking about and serving food in America. Without
an ounce of business sense or financial discipline, Alice
relied on the coterie of devoted friends and followers who
developed around her and on her strong principles of, among
other things, using only locally grown and organic ingredients
at the peak of their seasons, to keep her restaurant afloat.
It was a reckless, extravagant, inexperienced venture that
would have failed at any other time and place, but that
instead-somehow-turned into a food revolution. Today, Alice
Waters may be the most important figure in the culinary
history of North America. Chez Panisse revolutionized what
it means to eat out and gave birth to a new nationwide cuisine-the
first in this country not associated with a single region
or ethnic group, the first "American" cuisine.
"Gourmet's 2002" appraisal ranked Chez Panisse
as the best restaurant in America, and "The New York
Times" has called Alice "the mother of American
cooking." Alice has become a public figure, revered
and idolized by many. The first "foodie," she
has become a famous chef, activist, advocate, and spokeswoman
whose personal beliefs have become the values of an entire
food movement. But her complex personal character is hardly
known at all. Thomas McNamee was selected by Alice to document
her story and was given exclusive access to her and her
closest friends, to the Chez Panisse archives, and to private
collections and memorabilia. As the story unfolds over the
decades, we learn of her many passionate loves, her marriage,
her divorce, the birth of her daughter Fanny, her failures,
her critics. We come to know the extraordinary cast of characters
who have formed the ever-shifting Chez Panisse community-a
make-shift family with complex relationships, competing
interests, and a strange, almost cultish, devotion to each
other and to their work."

| Against
Prediction: Profiling, Policing, and Punishing in an Actuarial
Age - Publisher's Marketing:
"From random security checks at airports to the use
of risk assessment in sentencing, actuarial methods are
being used more than ever to determine whom law enforcement
officials target and punish. And with the exception of racial
profiling on our highways and streets, most people favor
these methods because they believe they’ re a more
cost-effective way to fight crime.
In "Against Prediction," Bernard E. Harcourt challenges
this growing reliance on actuarial methods. These prediction
tools, he demonstrates, may in fact "increase"
the overall amount of crime in society, depending on the
relative responsiveness of the profiled populations to heightened
security. They may also aggravate the difficulties that
minorities already have obtaining work, education, and a
better quality of life— thus perpetuating the pattern
of criminal behavior. Ultimately, Harcourt shows how the
perceived success of actuarial methods has begun to distort

The
Power of Place: How Our Surroundings Shape Our Thoughts, Emotions,
and Actions - Publisher's Marketing:
"Are New Yorkers and Californians so different because
they live in such different settings? Why do some of us prefer
the city to the country? How do urban settings increase crime?
Why do we feel better after an experience in nature?
Winifred Gallagher explores the complex relationships between
people and the places in which they live, love, and work.
Drawing on the latest research in behavioral and environmental
sciences, "The Power of Place" examines our reactions
to light, temperature, the seasons, and other natural phenomena,
and explores the interactions between our external and internal
worlds. Gallagher's broad and dynamic definition of place
includes mountaintops and the womb, Alaska's hinterlands
and Manhattan's subway, and she relates these settings to
everything from creativity to PMS, jet lag to tales of UFOs.
Edifying, accessible, and enormously entertaining, "The
Power of Place" offers the latest insights into the
many ways we can change our lives by changing the places
we live."

Poison
- Publisher's Marketing:
"A tour de force about marriage, deceit, envy, and
the reverberations of a life and a life's work.
The death of flamboyant writer and womanizer Peter Grosvenor
sets in motion a series of spiraling events surrounding
his legacy and his estate. His bitter third wife, his two
children, his sister, his friends, and his would-be biographers
are drawn into a maelstrom of intense memories and painful
encounters as each of the major players in Peter's life
seeks to appropriate Peter's estate for his or her own purposes.
As a complex story of passion, jealousy, and loss unfolds,
the figures that had once blossomed in Peter's presence
spin off into their own orbits and turn against one another
without the anchor of his charismatic presence. Ultimately,
the tragedy and scandal that marred his life cannot be ended
even by his death. Susan Fromberg Schaeffer writes with

Publisher's Marketing: "In
this unique and essential collection, Molly Ivins, Maureen
Dowd, Maria Hinojosa, and a host of other frontline thinkers,
journalists, and activists employ wit, outrage, and cold,
hard facts to expose the "W Effect,"a comprehensive
incursion into women's rights. In recent years, women around
the globe have come under attack-both literally, in the case
of war and punitive repression, and more subtly, in the case
of eroded rights and economic power. Yet this dangerous trend
has not, to date, been comprehensively documented and deconstructed-in
part because women are finding it harder to gain access to
the mainstream media.
Both a harsh reality check and a hopeful starting point
for new action, "The W Effect" brings together
the premier feminist voices to provide cutting-edge reports;
fresh, empowering analyses; and engaging, provocative ideas

Why
Does My Dog Act That Way?: A Complete Guide to Your Dog's
Personality - Publisher's Marketing:
"We've shared our lives with dogs for thousands of years,
but they still act in ways that baffle us. Do you ever look
at Ginger's body language and wonder what she's about to do?
Do you wish you could predict how King will act when brought
into a new situation or meeting a new person? Do you compare
your sweet, mild-mannered dog with your neighbor's aggressive,
unruly canine and wonder where your neighbor went wrong? In
short, do you ever wonder why dogs act that way?
This new book by the undisputed expert on dog behavior,
intelligence, and training, Stanley Coren, answers all these
questions and more. For many years, most people -- even
scientists -- mistakenly believed that dogs were simply
domesticated wolves, with natures, minds, and behaviors
significantly diminished from those of their wild cousins.
But recent discoveries have demonstrated that dogs are actually
much more complex than wolves, coyotes, foxes, and other
wild canines; their ability to adapt to a man-made world
is far more flexible, and their personalities are far more
diverse. Using the fascinating findings from scientific
experiments by dog breeders and the domestication of foxes
and wolves, Coren re-creates the story of how dogs evolved
over time into the myriad forms and breeds we love today.
With specific information on which breeds were bred to become
more dominant, affectionate, cooperative, or even dangerous,
this practical, surprising book can help you to select a
new companion or simply to understand your old friend better.
In "Why Does My Dog Act That Way?" Dr. Coren
also presents for the first time a simple, fun test you
can administer to your own dog to get a detailed picture
of his personality.Based on the personality-profiling questionnaires
used in human psychological studies, the "Dog Behavior
Inventory" is a straightforward, user-friendly test
to help you analyze the personality of your dog in relation
to other members of his breed. Using the findings of the
U.S. Army's once-classified studies of "Superdogs,"
you, too, can train your pet to become a "superdog"
-- a friendly, calm, confident, "bomb-proof" dog
that is not disturbed, angered, or frightened by much of
anything. New, exciting data also explain the characteristics
that make some dogs act heroically -- the real-life equivalents
of Lassie and Rin Tin Tin who spontaneously act to save
human lives.
So, why does your dog act the way he does? You'll soon
find out in this uniquely complete guide to dog psychology,
filled with all the entertaining anecdotes and scientific
data that Coren's avid followers have come to expect and
enjoy."

Park - Publisher's Marketing:
"Arlington Park, a modern-day English suburb very much
like its American counterparts, is a place devoted to the
profitable ordinariness of life. Amidst its leafy avenues
and comfortable houses, its residents live out the dubious
accomplishments of civilization: material prosperity, personal
freedom, and moral indifference. In Arlington Park, men
work, women look after children, and people generally do
what's expected of them. It's a world awash in contentment
but empty of belief, and riven with strange anxieties. How
are they to know right from wrong? How should they use their
knowledge of other people's sufferings? What is the relationship
of politics to their own domestic arrangements?
Set over the course of a single rainy day, the novel moves
from one household to another, and through the passing hours
conducts a deep examination of its characters' lives: of
Juliet, enraged at the victory of men over women in family
life; of Amanda, warding off thoughts of death with obsessive
housework; of Solly, who confronts her own buried femininity
in the person of her Italian lodger; of Maisie, despairing
at the inevitability with which beauty is destroyed; and
of Christine, whose troubled, hilarious spirit presides
over Arlington Park and the way of life it represents.
Darkly comic, deeply affecting, and wise, "Arlington
Park" is a page-turning imagining of the extraordinary
inner nature of ordinary life, by one of Britain's most
exciting young novelists."

The Controversial Story of Medicine's Greatest Lifesaver
- Publisher's Marketing:
"A fascinating account of vaccination's miraculous,
inflammatory past and its uncertain future.
In 1796, as smallpox ravaged Europe, Edward Jenner injected
a child with a benign version of the disease, then exposed
the child to the deadly virus itself. The boy proved resistant
to smallpox, and Jenner's risky experiment produced the
earliest vaccination. In this deftly written account, journalist
Arthur Allen reveals a history of vaccination that is both
illuminated with hope and shrouded by controversy--from
Jenner's discovery to Pasteur's vaccines for rabies and
cholera, to those that safeguarded the children of the twentieth
century, and finally to the tumult currently surrounding
vaccination.
Faced with threats from anthrax to AIDS, we are a vulnerable
population and can no longer depend on vaccines; numerous
studies have linked childhood vaccination with various neurological
disorders, and our pharmaceutical companies are more attracted
to the profits of treatment than to the prevention of disease.
With narrative grace and investigative journalism, Allen
explores our shifting understanding of vaccination since
its creation."

beloved authors, about whom The New York Times Book Review
has written, "There is a singular comfort in knowing,
on the first page of a novel, that you are in the hands
of a master ... who makes the ordinary extraordinary, the
unnamable unforgettable." In Returning to Earth. Harrison
has delivered a masterpiece--a tender, profound, and magnificent
novel about life, death, and finding redemption in sometimes
unlikely places. Donald is a middle-aged Chippewa-Finnish
man, married to a white woman who renounced the wealth she
was raised with, and father to two grown children. As Returning
to Earth opens, he is slowly dying of Lou Gehrig's Disease.
His condition deteriorating, he realizes no one alive will
be able to pass on to his children their family history
once he is gone. He begins dictating to his wife, Cynthia,
stories he has never shared with anyone--as around him,
his family struggles with how to lay him to rest with the
same dignity with which he always lived. Over the course
of the year following Donald's death, his loved ones deal
with how to let him go. His daughter begins studying Chippewa
ideas of death for clues on her father's religion, and her
mother, Cynthia, is at loose ends for how to protect or
guide her. Bereft of the family she created to escape the
malevolent influence of her own father, Cynthia, along with
her brother, David, an eccentric whose life mission is to
prevent Mexican-border crossers from dying in transit, find,
all these years later, that redeeming the past is not a
lost cause. Returning to Earth is a deeply moving book about
origins and endings, how to make sense of loss, and how
to live with honor for the dead. It isone of the finest
novels of Harrison's long, storied career, and will confirm
his standing as one of the most important American writers
now working."

"As nurses face the ongoing challenges of an increasing
need for their services combined with economic pressures,
members of the largest profession in health care must become
more visible, vocal, and influential. The first communication
guidebook designed expressly for nurses, From Silence to Voice
helps nurses understand and overcome the self-silencing that
often leads RNs to downplay their own expertise and their
contributions to the care of the sick and the health of the
public. Bernice Buresh and Suzanne Gordon teach nurses, nurse
educators, and nurse researchers critical skills they can
use to explain their work to other health-care professionals,
journalists, policymakers, and political representatives.
From Silence to Voice features stories about nurses who
ensure that patients receive appropriate, timely, and even
life-saving care, nurses who make all the difference while
crises are underway but whose contributions are neglected
in medical charts and thank-you notes, nurses who are left
out altogether or obscured by the generic "nurse."
However, the book also provides detailed accounts of nurses
who do make their voices heard, who do make their concerns
public- and it shows how those successes can be duplicated.
Buresh and Gordon draw on real-world examples that will
help nurses to
* gain respect for themselves as professionals,
* communicate well with both patients and health-care colleagues,
* understand how the news media work,
* collaborate with public relations professionals,
* write effective letters to the editor and publish op-ed

Coal: The Dirty Secret Behind America's Energy Future -
Publisher's Marketing: "Despite
a devastating, century-long legacy that has claimed millions
of lives and ravaged the environment, coal has become hot
again -- and will likely get hotter. In this penetrating
analysis, Goodell debunks the faulty assumptions underlying
coal's revival and shatters the myth of cheap coal energy.
In a compelling blend of hard-hitting investigative reporting,
history, and industry assessment, Goodell illuminates the
stark economic imperatives America faces and the collusion
of business and politics -- what is meant by "big coal"
-- that have set us on the dangerous course toward reliance
on this energy source.
Few of us realize that even today we burn a lump of coal
every time we flip on a switch. Coal already supplies more
than half the energy needed to power our iPods, laptops,
lights -- anything we use that consumes electricity. Our
desire to find a homegrown alternative to Mideast oil, the
rising cost of oil and natural gas, and the fossil fuel-friendly
mood in Washington will soon push our coal consumption through
the roof. Because we have failed to develop alternative
energy sources, coal has effectively become the default
fuel for the twenty-first century."

Kingdom: Mythmaking on the Saudi Oil Frontier -
Publisher's Marketing: "America's
Kingdom debunks the many myths that now surround the United
States's "special relationship" with Saudi Arabia,
or what is less reverently known as "the deal":
oil for security. Taking aim at the long-held belief that
the Arabian American Oil Company, ARAMCO, made miracles
happen in the desert, Robert Vitalis shows that nothing
could be further from the truth. What is true is that oil
led the U.S. government to follow the company to the kingdom.
Eisenhower agreed to train Ibn Sa'ud's army, Kennedy sent
jets to defend the kingdom, and Lyndon Johnson sold it missiles.
Oil and ARAMCO quickly became America's largest single overseas
private enterprise. Beginning with the establishment of
a Jim Crow system in the Dhahran oil camps in the 1930s,
the book goes on to examine the period of unrest in the
1950s and 1960s when workers challenged the racial hierarchy
of the ARAMCO camps while a small cadre of progressive Saudis
challenged the hierarchy of the international oil market.
The defeat of these groups led to the consolidation of America's
Kingdom under the House of Fahd, the royal faction that
still rules today. This is a gripping story that covers
more than seventy years, three continents, and an engrossing
cast of characters. Informed by first hand accounts from
ARAMCO employees and top U.S. government officials, this
book offers the true story of the events on the Saudi oil
fields. After America's Kingdom, mythmakers will have to
work harder on their tales about ARAMCO being magical, honorable,
selfless, and enlightened."

| Backlash:
The Undeclared War Against American Women
- Publisher's Marketing:
"Skillfully Probing the Attack on Women's Rights
"Opting-out," "security moms," "desperate
housewives," "the new baby fever"--the trend
stories of 2006 leave no doubt that American women are still
being barraged by the same backlash messages that Susan
Faludi brilliantly exposed in her 1991 bestselling book
of revelations. Now, the book that reignited the feminist
movement is back in a fifteenth anniversary edition, with
a new preface by the author that brings backlash consciousness
up to date.
When it was first published, "Backlash" made headlines
for puncturing such favorite media myths as the "infertility
epidemic" and the "man shortage," myths that
defied statistical realities. These willfully fictitious
media campaigns added up to an antifeminist backlash. Whatever
progress feminism has recently made, Faludi's words today
seem prophetic. The media still love stories about stay-at-home
moms and the "dangers" of women's career ambitions;
the glass ceiling is still low; women are still punished
for wanting to succeed; basic reproductive rights are still
hanging by a thread. The backlash clearly exists.
With passion and precision, Faludi shows in her new preface
how the creators of commercial culture distort feminist
concepts to sell products while selling women downstream,
how the feminist ethic of economic independence is twisted
into the consumer ethic of buying power, and how the feminist
quest for self-determination is warped into a self-centered
quest for self-improvement. "Backlash" is a classic
of feminism, an alarm bell for women of every generation,
reminding us of the dangers that we still face."

our chaotic and permissive society are recognizable to all

characters range from a charismatic black imam schooled
in the militancy of the Nation of Islam to the daughter
of an Indian immigrant family whose feminist views divided
her father's mosque in West Virginia. Here are lives in
conflict, reflecting in different ways the turmoil affecting
the religion worldwide. An intricate mixture of ideologies
and cultures, American Muslims include immigrants and native
born, black and white converts, those who are well integrated
into the larger society and those who are alienated and
extreme in their political views. Even as many American
Muslims succeed in material terms and enrich our society,
Islam is enmeshed in controversy in the United States, as
thousands of American Muslims have been investigated and
interrogated in the wake of 9/11.

Biodiesel
Power: The Passion, the People, and the Politics of the Next
Renewable Fuel - Publisher's
Marketing: "Whether we are nearing the end of
oil or merely nearing the end of "inexpensive" oil,
it is becoming increasingly clear that we need to find alternative
ways to meet our energy needs. Biodiesel is one such alternative-and
is one of the fastest-growing sectors of the US economy.
Biodiesel in North America is in its infancy. As air quality
deteriorates in major centers, governments are scrambling
for ways to reduce emissions and are embracing biodiesel
in their fleets. Conferences on biodiesel are often "inaugural"
as society begins discussing this fuel in earnest.
"Biodiesel Power" is a chronicle of this emerging
industry. Lightly touching on the technical aspects of the
fuel, its qualities, and specifications, the book is largely
about the people and stories of the biodiesel movement.
It explores the tensions between
Grass-roots activists and their altruistic co-ops
The profit-minded commercial producers and the voices of
agribusiness
The current administration-or "the coalition of the
drilling"
Far from a third-party account, "Biodiesel Power"
comes from one who has experienced it from the grease dumpster
to the boardroom. Lyle Estill has made the journey from
backyard brewing, to being part of a producer and distributor
cooperative, to commercial production.
Compelling and timely, "Biodiesel Power" is the
history of biodiesel in the making. It will appeal to a
wide audience, including farmers, truckers, backyarders,
and commercial producers, investors, politicians, and all
those concerned about the end of oil."

Goodness Sake: Religious Schools and Education for Democratic
Citizenry - Publisher's
Marketing: "While the question of religion in
public schools is often a matter of fierce debate, few Americans
consider the implication of religious education on moral
education and liberal democracy more generally. When it
comes to religious education, many assume that only those
within a given religious community have any serious interest
in the religious content of education, and in the moral
education of children in religious schools. This important
book seeks to change that perception, demonstrating that
what happens within religious schools and the education
available to all children, regardless of the school they
attend, are public issues. It opens up a critical dialogue
in liberal, democratic societies. Drawing on examples from
Christian, Jewish, and Muslim schools and on topics from
sex education to creationism, Walter Feinberg illustrates
from a secular point of view the important role religious
schools play in the formation of a democratic citizenry."

nuts? When people come into my office for a five-minute
conversation and an hour later, they're still there! Why
can't they cut to the chase?"
Lauer's question echoed the concerns Levine has heard from
business people and top executives at every level: How can
I get more done? How can I stay focused? How can I condense
my workday so that I can become more successful and still
spend more time with the people I love?
Levine's answer? By cutting to the chase. Successful individuals
are the ones who make the best use of their time and energy.
They approach each task with clarity, focus, and purpose.
They prioritize. They don't allow others to waste their
time. They understand the importance of refueling their
batteries outside of work. In "Cut to the Chase,"
Levine distills the expertise of hundreds of CEOs, leaders,
and professionals into 100 concise, invaluable lessons about
how to get to the point, stay on track, and be more successful
in everything you do.
In an age where we spend more hours at work than ever before,
"Cut to the Chase" is the indispensable guide
for taking control over your time so that you can lead a
happier, more balanced life."

Hormone Decision - Publisher's
Marketing: "It's the most pressing question
on the minds of women at any stage of the menopausal transition:
"Should I or shouldn't I take menopause hormones?"
The answer is far from crystal clear. Hormone drugs are
the most effective therapy for easing hot flashes and other
common menopause symptoms. But their long-term effects have
been the focus of intense scrutiny and debate. As the weekly
consumer health columnist for the Wall Street Journal, Tara
Parker-Pope has been an eyewitness to the growing controversy
surrounding hormone therapy. Her understanding of menopause
research, and her access to the experts behind it, has given
her unique insight into the complex issues surrounding hormone
use. In "The Hormone Decision," Parker-Pope explores
the scientific, political and social forces that have shaped
current thinking on hormone therapy. And she takes you on
a head to toe tour of how hormones affect every part of
your body, including your brain, your breasts, your heart,
your bones, your vagina, and even your skin. As you will
discover, hormone therapy is not one-size-fits-all. It's
as individual as your health status, family history and
menopause experience. When you start hormone therapy and
how long you use it are major factors in determining its
health effects. While it may raise certain risks for some
women, it actually may be protective for others. This is
why you need an independent, objective resource like "The
Hormone Decision." It provides the context for you
to understand the research, ask intelligent questions, and
ultimately choose whether or not hormone therapy is right
for you."

Insult
to Injury: Rethinking Our Responses to Intimate Abuse
- Publisher's Marketing:
"Locking up men who beat their partners sounds like a
tremendous improvement over the days when men could hit women
with impunity and women fearing for their lives could expect
no help from authorities. But does our system of requiring
the arrest, prosecution, and incarceration of abusers lessen
domestic violence or help battered women? In this already
controversial but vitally important book, we learn that the
criminal justice system may actually be making the problem
of domestic violence worse. Looking honestly at uncomfortable
facts, Linda Mills makes the case for a complete overhaul
and presents a promising alternative.
The evidence turns up some surprising facts about the complexities
of intimate abuse, facts that run against mainstream assumptions:
The current system robs battered women of what power they
do hold. Perhaps as many as half of women in abusive relationships
stay in them for strong cultural, economic, religious, or
emotional reasons. Jailing their partners often makes their
situations worse. Women are at least as physically violent
and emotionally aggressive as are men toward women, and
women's aggression is often central to the dynamic of intimate
abuse.
Informed by compelling evidence, personal experience, and
what abused women themselves say about their needs, Mills
proposes no less than a fundamentally new system. Addressing
the real dynamics of intimate abuse and incorporating proven
methods of restorative justice, Mills's approach focuses
on healing and transformation rather than shame or punishment.
Already the subject of heated controversy, Insult to Injury
offers a desperately needed and powerful means for using
what we know to reduce violence in our homes."

Don't Eat the Animals: All the Reasons You Need to Be a
Vegetarian - Publisher's Marketing:
"Please Don't Eat the Animals: All the Reasons You
Need to Be a Vegetarian is an exciting and provocative new
book on the universal benefits of being a vegetarian. Authors
Horsman and Flowers detail the many reasons for the burgeoning
movement toward a plant-based diet in four short, interesting,
easy-to-digest sections: Health Nowhere is the appeal of
vegetarianism reflected more than in health issues. Scientists
and doctors have begun drawing the connection between heavily
meat-laden diets and the most serious health problems. Environment
Livestock farming accounts for over half of both fresh water
and ocean pollution. It significantly effects air pollution,
deforestation especially of rain forests and the decimation
of wildlife populations. Animal Welfare Animal welfare issues
have gained prominence in recent years. Animal rights/ethics
courses have emerged on university campuses, even in law
schools. Please Don't Eat The Animals reveals the plight
of animals on factory farms, a sad and troubling picture
indeed. Religious and Spiritual Fresh and original, this
section points to the fact that Christianity, Judaism, and
Islam have strong injunctions against cruelty to animals.
All Hindus are vegetarians. Mohammed said, "Whoever
is kind to the creatures of God is kind to himself."
And, according to the Buddha, "The eating of meat extinguishes
the great seed of compassion.""

The
Real Toy Story: Inside the Ruthless Battle for America's Youngest
Consumers - Publisher's Marketing:
" The American toy business is massive, world dominating,
cutthroat, exciting, and increasingly willing to sacrifice
our kids in its frantic rush for profit. And yet, for all
its rapaciousness, the industry is in the business of delighting
and fascinating our children. Toys are one of the most emotive
subjects in the world. We all remember our own toys; we care
desperately about those we choose for our kids, knowing these
objects help shape children's lives. They are also a constantly
newsworthy item: every Christmas, which toys are hot -- and
the scramble by parents to grab them before the stores are
empty -- is front-page and TV bulletin news.
"The Real Toy Story" tells the tales of these
toys and of the vast, world-dominating $22 billion American
industry that creates them. The rewards for success are
enormous: a top toy can earn billions -- H. Ty Warner shot
into "Forbes's" World's Richest People list with
his creation of Beanie Babies. The price of failure is just
as huge -- the battlefield is littered with the corpses
of once-successful toy companies whose multimillion-dollar
gambles did not pay off.
It is a world of contrasts. "The Real Toy Story"
looks at both sides: at Slinky, Elmo, Barbie, Transformers,
and their creators, but also at the dark side of an industry
that leads the way in cold-blooded marketing targeted at
children. Parents will want to learn about how this seemingly
benign industry exploits, sometimes surreptitiously, the
many new media: cable television, the internet, CD-ROMs,
sometimes even invading the playgrounds to peddle their
wares to unsuspecting young people.
Perhaps more disturbingly, this hard-hitting book examines
the vast gap between thecuddly image of toys and how almost
all toys destined for America are actually produced in China
under sweatshop conditions.
Today the toy industry is in the midst of rapid change.
Tapping into the concern millions of adults have about the
toys they choose for the children in their lives, this riveting
expose is essential reading for everyone who cares about
kids."

Sex,
Lies, and Handwriting: A Top Expert Reveals the Secrets Hidden
in Your Handwriting - Publisher's
Marketing: " Have you ever looked at someone and
thought:
He looks honest.
She seems friendly.
He doesn't look like a serial killer.
Are you always right?
Looks can be deceiving, but handwriting never lies. Handwriting
profiling is an amazingly accurate tool for assessing how
people think, feel, and act. In fact, handwriting profiling
is so accurate that the FBI, the CIA, and the Israeli intelligence
agency Mossad use it to build detailed psychological profiles
of some of the world's most dangerous individuals. And thousands
of major corporations use handwriting profiling to help
them make the right hiring decisions.
Handwriting expert Michelle Dresbold -- the only civilian
to be invited to the United States Secret Service's Advanced
Document Examination training program -- draws on her extensive
experience helping law enforcement agencies around the country
on cases involving kidnapping, arson, forgery, murder, embezzlement,
and stalking to take us inside the mysterious world of crossed
t's and dotted i's.
In "Sex, Lies, and Handwriting," Dresbold explains
how a single sentence can provide insight into a person's
background, psychology, and behavior. Throughout the book,
Dresbold explores the handwriting of sly politicians, convicted
criminals, notorious killers, suspected cheats, and ordinary
people who've written to Dresbold's "The Handwriting
Doctor" column for help. She shows you how to identify
the signs of a dirty rotten scoundrel and a lying, cheating,
backstabbing lover. And she introduces you to some of the
most dangerous traits in handwriting, including weapon-shaped
letters, "shark's teeth," "club strokes,"
and "felon's claws." (When you see these traits
insomeone's script, she says, "it's time to stop reading
and start running!")
Dresbold also explains how criminals are tracked through
handwritten clues and what spouses, friends, or employees
might be hiding in their script.
Finally, Dresbold re-examines the handwriting evidence
in several notorious unsolved cases. She uncovers fascinating
clues that reveal the secret side of Lizzie Borden, acquitted
of the ax murder of her parents in 1893's "trial of
the century." Dresbold also reveals astonishing details
about the author of the JonBenEt Ramsey ransom note, and
she presents startling new evidence that exposes the real
Jack the Ripper (contrary to popular theories, he wasn't
a prince or a painter after all).
"Sex, Lies, and Handwriting" will have you paying

Needle in the Right Hand of God: The Norman Conquest of
1066 and the Making and Meaning of the Bayeux Tapestry
- Publisher's Marketing:
"The Bayeux Tapestry is the world's most famous textile-an
exquisite 230-foot-long embroidered panorama depicting the
events surrounding the Norman Conquest of 1066. It is also
one of history's most mysterious and compelling works of
art. This haunting stitched account of the battle that redrew
the map of medieval Europe has inspired dreams of theft,
waves of nationalism, visions of limitless power, and esthetic
rapture. In his fascinating new book, Yale professor R.
Howard Bloch reveals the history, the hidden meaning, the
deep beauty, and the enduring allure of this astonishing
piece of cloth.
Bloch opens with a gripping account of the event that inspired
the Tapestry: the swift, bloody Battle of Hastings, in which
the Norman bastard William defeated the Anglo-Saxon king,
Harold, and laid claim to England under his new title, William
the Conqueror. But to truly understand the connection between
battle and embroidery, one must retrace the web of international
intrigue and scandal that climaxed at Hastings. Bloch demonstrates
how, with astonishing intimacy and immediacy, the artisans
who fashioned this work of textile art brought to life a
moment that changed the course of British culture and history.
Every age has cherished the Tapestry for different reasons
and read new meaning into its enigmatic words and images.
French nationalists in the mid-nineteenth century, fired
by Tapestry's evocation of military glory, unearthed the
lost French epic "The Song of Roland," which Norman
troops sang as they marched to victory in 1066. As the Nazis
tightened their grip on Europe, Hitler
sent a team to France to study the Tapestry, decode its
Nordic elements, and, at the end of the war, with Paris
under siege, bring the precious cloth to Berlin. The richest
horde of buried Anglo-Saxon treasure, the matchless beauty
of Byzantine silk, Aesop's strange fable "The Swallow
and the Linseed," the colony that Anglo-Saxon nobles
founded in the Middle East following their defeat at Hastings-all
are brilliantly woven into Bloch's riveting narrative.
Seamlessly integrating Norman, Anglo-Saxon, Viking, and
Byzantine elements, the Bayeux Tapestry ranks with Chartres
and the Tower of London as a crowning achievement of medieval
Europe. And yet, more than a work of art, the Tapestry served
as the suture that bound up the wounds of 1066.
Enhanced by a stunning full-color insert that includes reproductions
of the complete Tapestry, "A Needle in the Right Hand
of God "will stand with "The Professor and the
Madman" and "How the Irish Saved Civilization"
as a triumph of popular history."

Global
AIDS: Myths and Facts: Tools for Fighting the AIDS Pandemic
- Publisher's Marketing:
"AIDS is the most devastating communicable disease in
history, and structures of poverty and injustice are magnifying
the crisis in underresourced countries.
More than 36 million people are infected with HIV/AIDS-the
vast majority of them in the poor world, or in poor and
marginalized communities within wealthy countries. And since
AIDS was first recognized in the early 1980s, 13 million
children have been orphaned and 22 million people have died
from the disease.
Irwin and Millen, co-authors of the critically "praised
Dying for Growth: Global Inequality and the Health of the
Poor," demonstrate that it is morally imperative and
practically feasible to control the spread of AIDS by overturning
common myths about treatment and prevention.
For example, it is often argued that ordinary citizens
in rich countries can do little to fight AIDS in poor counties.
But Irwin and Millen show how individual activists, students,
health providers, and members of international health organizations
have helped to play pivotal roles in lowering drug prices
and securing increased funding for vaccine development.
Activism and education by groups like ACT UP, Student Global
AIDS Campaign, and various religious organizations is forcing
national and international leaders to take greater responsibility
for the global AIDS cri | | |
