Anne
Rice: A Critical Companion - Publisher's
Marketing: "Anne Rice's fame rests on her supernatural
tales, but she is far more than a horror novelist. She goes
beyond the genre by changing the classic horror stories
into myths, fairy tales, and nightmares in order to explore
philosophical questions of life, death, evil, and the meaning
of existence. This is the most up-to-date analysis of her
work and includes individual chapters on each of her vampire,
mummy, and witch novels, including Memnoch the Devil (1995).
A perfect companion for students and Anne Rice fans, this
study also features a biographical chapter and a chapter
which discusses her use of the supernatural, gothic, horror,
and fantasy genres."

| The
Changing Vampire of Film and Television: A Critical Study
of the Growth of a Genre - Publisher's
Marketing: "Vampires have been a fixture of
film since Bela Lugosi brought Bram Stokers Dracula to life
on the big screen in 1931. Over the decades the genre has
been far from static, as vampire narratives changed and
evolved with the appetites of their viewing public. First
depicted as formally dressed villains, vampires would later
be portrayed as supernatural beings with some human characteristics,
and still later as sympathetic figures. Focusing on 19 representative
films and television productions, this critical study tracks
the evolutionary changes of the screen vampire. It explores
the factors that cause a genre to change and examines the
alternating cycles of audience expectation. The author identifies
three distinct modes of depiction: the Malignant Cycle (19311948),
comprised primarily of the Universal films; the Erotic Cycle
(19571985), which encompasses Hammer films and popular television
shows; and the Sympathetic Cycle (1987present) including
recent offerings. Each film is evaluated in seven key areas
including the act of the vampire biting the victim; process
of the victims infection; physical appearance and demeanor
of the vampire and the vampire expert; and the eventual
destruction of the vampire. Appendices include a complete
filmography of the films examined."

Dracula
by Bram Stoker - Publisher's
Marketing: "Of the many admiring reviews Bram
Stoker’s Dracula received when it first appeared in
1897, the most astute praise came from the author's mother,
who wrote her son: 'It is splendid. No book since Mrs. Shelley's
Frankenstein or indeed any other at all has come near yours
in originality, or terror.'
A popular bestseller in Victorian England, Stoker's hypnotic
tale of the bloodthirsty Count Dracula, whose nocturnal
atrocities are symbolic of an evil ages old yet forever
new, endures as the quintessential story of suspense and
horror. The unbridled lusts and desires, the diabolical
cravings that Stoker dramatized with such mythical force,
render Dracula resonant and unsettling a century later."

| Legends
of Blood: The Vampire in History and Myth
- Publisher's Marketing:
"Of all the fictional monsters that have pierced society's
collective consciousness, none has been so persistent or
seductive as the vampire. Tales of the undead preying upon
the blood of the living have survived in one form or another
for thousands of years and across cultures. Legends of Blood
traces this fascinating history from the myths of Ancient
Greece and Egypt through the Gothic literature of 19th century
Europe and up to present day, emphasizing how the tales
of this alluring creature tap into humanity's most basic
and primal fears. Wayne Bartlett and Flavia Idriceanu's
highly readable yet impeccably researched book is a must-have
