SJRCC's Educator Preparation Institute (EPI)
Do you have a non-education bachelor's degree?
Would you like to become a certified teacher?
If your answer to these questions is Yes, SJRCC's EPI program is designed to prepare you for an exciting career as a teacher in Florida.
SJRCC's EPI Program is designed to provide the knowledge necessary to obtain a Florida Professional Teaching Certificate and prepare you for the Florida Professional Educator Certification Exam.

SJRCC's Educator Preparation Institute Satisfies:
- The Professional Preparation Courses listed on the Statement of Status of Eligibility;
- The Demonstration of Professional Education Competence;
- The Practical Teaching Experience requirement (two years full-time teaching experience in an elementary or secondary school).
In addition to completing the EPI coursework, the EPI participant must take and pass the Professional Education Test (part of the Florida Teacher Certification Exam) in order to successfully complete the Educator Preparation Institute program.
EPI Program Entrance Requirements:
- Possess a Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university;
- Submit EPI Application to Open Campus, including signed written statement, under oath, subscribing to the principles of the United States and Florida;
- Submit SJRCC Application. Application Fee of $30.00, payable to the college, must accompany application (Effective July 1, 2010);
- Submit unopened, official transcripts to Open Campus;
- Submit Statement of Eligibility for Certification or receipt of application for Statement of Eligibility for Certification from the FLDOE to Open Campus (receipt of application for Statement of Eligibility will suffice for application to EPI program, but Statement of Eligibility must be received before second semester of classes begins)
Apply online for Statement of Eligibility at FLDOE;
- Submit to and pass finger printing for background check (student responsible for paying fingerprinting/background check fee);
- Complete an oral interview with EPI representative so as to reveal the applicant:
- Possesses the dispositions suitable for becoming a teacher
- Has good moral character
- Is competent and capable of performing the duties, functions, and responsibilities of an educator
- Is sensitive to community and cultural considerations
- Is willing to work with other professionals to ensure student success
- Has respect for students, parents, and other educators
- Is able to establish a positive learning environment
- Has effective verbal and non-verbal communication
- Has enthusiasm for teaching

EPI Program Cost:
The total cost of the EPI program (tuition, fees, books) for students paying in-state tuition is approximately $2700. Please keep in mind that this can change due to an increase in tuition and/or books.
Students can apply for financial aid that is need-based, and there are some scholarships available for those who qualify.

The EPI's alternative certification program is a 21 credit program consisting of 7 courses and 2 field experiences. All credits will be offered each fall and spring semester, with limited credits offered during the summer semester, and the entire EPI program can be completed in one year or less.

Florida Teacher Certification Exam Test Review Workshops: Are you working toward a Florida professional teaching certificate and need to take a review for the:
- FTCE Professional Education,
- General Knowledge Math,
- General Knowledge English,
- Elementary Education K-6,
- Exceptional Student Education K-12, or
- Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum 5-9 exam
SJRCC's Florida Teacher Certification Exam Test Review Workshops are designed to give you a review of the information tested on the FTCE and the confidence you need going into the exam.
- FTCE Test Review classes are non-credit continuing education courses and therefore have no requirements, prerequisites or application fees.
- FTCE Test Reviews are $25 for each workshop. Students will receive the book for FREE! at the workshop.
- Registration for Review Workshops is currently open until classes fill or begin. View FTCE Review Workshop Schedule. If you register late, please bring your receipt to the workshop.

EPI Course Descriptions:
EPI0001 Classroom Management
This course teaches participants how to maintain a classroom. Topics will include: record keeping, classroom management, school safety, Sunshine State Standards into curriculum, development of lesson plans, parent conferences, assessment techniques, implications of FCAT and other standardized tests, professional ethics, and school law and the teacher.
EPI0002 Instructional Strategies
This course teaches participants to become proficient in the application of a variety of instructional strategies based on learning styles, cooperative and collaborative learning, accommodations for exceptional students, and the infusion of technology into lesson plans.
EPI0003 Technology
This course teaches participants to employ technology as an integral part of the teaching and learning process. Instruction is provided in commonly used software suites and on the Internet. The use of blended learning to enrich and engage students and increase their technology skills is a major emphasis. Copyright and fair use guidelines are reinforced.
EPI0004 The Teaching and Learning Process
This course teaches a foundation of various learning theories as applied in the instructional process. Topics will include learning theories, motivation and persistence, intelligence, exceptionalities, standardized testing, critical thinking, multiple intelligences, and second language acquisition.
EPI0010 Foundations of Research-Based Practices in Reading
This course teaches language structure and function and cognition of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Further, it provides knowledge of the integration of the reading components. Instruction in this module is grounded in scientifically-based research as a mechanism to inform instructional practice. NOTE: This course satisfies "Competency Two" of the Florida reading endorsement.
EPI0020 Professional Foundations
This segment provides the foundation for becoming a productive member of the teaching profession. The participants will gain understanding of the organization and administration of the public schools, the laws governing teachers, the code of ethics, and the purpose of the schools. The module develops a professional perspective and creates a sense of grounding in the profession of teaching.
EPI0940 Field Experience for Professional Foundations
This module/segment provides the foundation for becoming a productive member of the teaching profession. The participants will gain understanding of the organization and administration of the public school, the laws governing teachers, the code of ethics, and the purpose of schools. This module develops a professional perspective and creates a sense of grounding in the profession of teaching. Participants will complete field experience in public, charter, or accredited private schools. These field experiences will provide the opportunity to gain insight into the instructional process. Those participants who are teaching will be required to complete field experience in the schools where they are assigned.
EPI0030 Diversity
This segment provides participants with an understanding of a variety of backgrounds and cultures that may be found in a typical classroom.
EPI0945 Field Experience for Diversity
Field experiences give a broader view of the social aspects of diversity and cause the participants to reevaluate personal beliefs and prejudices that may adversely affect the learning process. Participants will complete a series of experiences designed to give prospective teachers a perspective on the varied backgrounds of students in public schools. Cohorts will meet together to discuss these experiences and to relate them to their observations of students as well as student behaviors and interactions in the schools.
