The Rebirth of Viking Basketball at SJRCC The SJRCC basketball team, under head coach Buster Harvey, begins the 2007-2008 season with their sights on winning the Mid-Florida Conference championship. The SJRCC basketball team hopes to build on the solid foundation that was established from the previous season with an 18-12 win/loss record, the most wins in 40 years (1967). It was the first winning season since 1975. The win/loss turn-around is one of the best in NJCAA history.
2007-2008 Men's Basketball Team The men's basketball program at St. Johns River Community College has one main goal - help develop gentlemen who will contribute to our society. Coach Harvey believes that each player on the team will experience success in knowing that he did his best by giving his all. "I am thoroughly convinced that those who have the self-satisfaction of knowing they have done their best will also be on the most desirable end of scores as much as, and perhaps more than, their natural ability indicate," Harvey said. Team effort, pride, discipline and determination are key words to success, both on and off the court. The Viking team effort encompasses not only the players and coaches but our community, administration, faculty and staff... the whole College. We emphasize that basketball is a means to an end and not an end in itself. Education comes first and becoming a person with high standards and good character is of the most importance. Although we have a goal of winning the national championship, our players learn that there are more important things in life. Viking basketball is the most exciting brand of basketball. The team plays the full 94 feet of the court on both offense and defense. Pressure basketball is the style which best suits our talent. OUR GOALS: - Our academic goals for the next two years are:
SJRCC athletes also embrace community goals. The basketball team is committed to at least five community service projects each semester. BACK TO TOP Sporting a History SJRCC has been a charter member of the Florida Community College Activities Association, the governing body for intercollegiate competition within the state, since 1965. The college is also a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association and participates in Region VIII of this organization. A basketball team was formed during the first year of the school's existence in 1958. The team, under the leadership of Coach William "Bill" H. Tuten, experienced a winning record in its inaugural campaign. The Viking's record in its first year was 14-6. In 1963, the Vikings moved into what is now known as the William H. Tuten Gymnasium. The school won its first conference championship that year. The Vikings won their second conference championship in 1966. The 1966 team featured three of the four players to ever be named All-Staters. Two of those players were sophomore Neal Chancey and freshman Bobby Stevens. The very next year the Vikings had another prosperous year as they were crowned conference co-champions, state tournament runner-ups, Region VIII champions. Because of the Region VIII success, the Vikings participated in their first and only national junior college tournament. Sophomore Stevens was tabbed as an All-Stater for the second time as well as being named a National Junior College All-American. Marshall Bradley, a sophomore guard on the team, was also selected an All-Stater. The other starting guard on that 1967 team was Charles "Joe" Asher, the school's former athletic director. It wasn't until 12 years later that a Viking Basketball team would participate in another post-season tournament. In 1975, the Vikings were runner-up in the Mid-Florida Conference. This second place finish allowed them to participate in the state tournament. Chancey, the school's first All-Stater, was the Viking's coach. Since their last state tournament appearance in 1975, the 1989-90 Vikings, coached by Steve Swank, posted a 17-10 record. This was the only winning season for the Vikings in the 90's. The 1999-2000 season was their best season since that time. The Vikings won a post season game for the first time in a decade. As a matter of fact, the Vikings were literally inches from extending that season as a lay-up lingered on the rim but would not fall.
