Looking Back, Moving Forward

A Letter from SJRCC President
Dr. Robert L. McLendon, Jr.

I am extremely pleased to announce our celebration of the 50th anniversary of St. Johns River Community College.

SJRCC was authorized by the 1957 session of the Legislature as one of the first 6 community colleges to be established. Our college opened in 1958 in Palatka but it was created to serve Clay, Putnam, and St. Johns counties.

For several years a school bus brought students from Clay and St. Johns counties, to the Palatka Campus. The Orange Park Campus opened in temporary buildings in 1977 and the St. Augustine Campus opened in the old Fullerwood School in 1986. Permanent buildings on the present site opened in Orange Park in January, 1989. Permanent buildings on the present site opened in St. Augustine in January, 1996.

The Florida School of the Arts (FloArts) opened on the Palatka campus in 1976. The Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts and Conference Center opened on the Orange Park Campus in 2004. The Higgins-Solomon Law Enforcement Academy opened on the St. Augustine Campus in 2003.

SJRCC now has nearly 13,000 students and is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The College is governed by a seven member Board of Trustees representing Clay, Putnam and St. Johns counties. These trustees are appointed by the Governor and approved by the Senate.

Our thanks go out to all of you who love this college and support it. Please join me in wishing St. Johns River Community College a wonderful 50th anniversary.

Most sincerely,
R. L. McLendon, Jr., Ph.D., President
